It's a night Jon Rahm will never forget after he lifted his maiden Major title by finishing with a flourish to capture the US Open at Torrey Pines.

And it will live long in the memory of those who witnessed a captivating final round that featured tears, trees, crates of lager and a few meltdowns from the game's top stars.

We've loved bringing you the action from San Diego via our live text commentary this week - we hope you have enjoyed reading it as much as we've enjoyed bringing it to you.

There's one more Major left on the 2021 calendar, of course and it's much closer to home - The 149th Open from July 15-18. We'll see you back here then for full coverage from Royal St George's.

  3. 'I went out and got it'published at 01:56 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

US Open champion Jon Rahm, speaking to Sky Sports:

"I can say I went and got it. It's easy to try to make pars and wait for mistakes but I was hitting really good shots down the stretch and not making the short putts.

"But I stayed patient. Even though there were only two holes left, I knew something was happening and I felt surprisingly calm on those two putts [on 17 and 18] - as fast as my heart was racing, I believed.

"It doesn't usually happen in US Opens so to finish the tournament birdie, birdie feels really good."

  4. 'I knew something big was going to happen'published at 01:53 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

Jon Rahm, speaking to Sky Sports:

"It's hard to explain how I feel. Maybe tomorrow or in a couple of days I will realise 'Oh my God, what just happened?'

"What happened a couple of weeks was unfortunate, it was out of my control - but what I could control was my thought process and staying positive.

"There were a couple of hard moments, like not being there when my parents met my son for the first time, that wasn't easy. But I kept telling myself something big was coming. I really knew today, on the back nine, the way I was feeling that something big was going to happen.

"To have my parents here, and Kelly and our little boy Kepa, and Kelly's parents too, I mean the whole family is here, it's hard to explain. The only thing that could be better is if my brother and his little girl, who turned a year old a couple of days ago and who I haven't met yet, could have been here."

  5. Family 'the reason why I won'published at 01:47 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

Jon Rahm on being surrounded by his family at the tournament:

"It is the exact reason why I won. It had to happen in a beautiful setting like this. Nothing in my life has come easy and definitely managing the emotions of knowing what could be done today wasn't easy either.

"But I used it to my advantage in the last few holes - and even though Father's Day in Spain is on a different day, I'm fortunate enough to celebrate it today and we're going to have fun because there are three different generations of Rahms on this green right now.

"One of them [baby son Kepa] doesn't really know what's going on but I am glad he is going to get to see it in the future and enjoy it."

  6. 'The power of positive thinking'published at 01:44 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

    Jon Rahm to American television:

"This is the power of positive thinking - I was never resentful for any second about what happened and I don't blame anybody.

"It's been a difficult year and unfortunately Covid is a reality in this world and it's affected a lot of people. And I got out of what happened the best possible hand because nobody got sick, I barely got any symptoms.

"We have lost a lot of people back home. We have lost some friends and this one is for a friend of mine who was a journalist and had just started getting into golf and he was basically following me around the world of golf.

"When he first started, he had no idea what golf was. He passed away a few months ago from Covid. It was very quick from the time he got it to going into the ICU and passing away.

"I know what happened a couple of weeks ago, some people might say it was unfair but it was what had to be done. We still have to be aware what's going on in this world and take care of yourself and everybody around you so we can get over this as quick as possible."

Let's get some more reaction from the new champ who was denied a PGA win at The Memorial a few weeks ago by a positive Covid test when he was leading by six shots.

He says the perspective he has on the issue ensured it did not bother him...

  8. 'Incredible that I finished the way I did'published at 01:38 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

Newly-crowned US Open champion to American television:

"You hear many people saying all you need to do is hang on and let others make mistakes - and that simply just wasn't happening.

"After I missed the two short birdie putts on 13 and 14 I told Adam (Rahm's caddie), 'two fours and two threes wins the tournament'.

"It's incredible that I finished the way I did - winning again here where I got my first win, it's hard to describe.

"It's about staying in the present and sometimes you have to attack a golf course - I've done it here before and those memories always help."

    Rahm -6 (F)

Jon Rahm has just been awarded with the gold medal and US Open trophy to loud cheers from the Torrey Pines galleries.

A strange ceremony featuring a flyover from some planes that looked like it wasn't going to happen, then did.

Jon Rahm won't care. Nothing is going to spoil this moment, his first Major triumph.

    Oosthuizen -5 (F)

Spare a thought for Louis Oosthuizen, who finishes as a Major runner-up for the sixth time in his career.

The 2010 Open champion actually recorded a birdie on the last with a cracking putt but it wasn't enough.

The bogey on the 17th proved costly as he finished a shot behind Jon Rahm.

Could he have gone for the green on 18 from that second shot in the rough? Or would it have ended up in the pond? We'll never know.

  11. 'It's like being back home'published at 01:28 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

Jon Rahm, who won his first PGA Tour event in San Diego in 2017, talks about his love for the course after lifting the US Open:

"The course reminds me a lot of back home - it's not exactly the same but the coastline, the weather, the temperature, this is basically a good summer day where I grew up.

"The poa annua greens are something I know and understand and grew up on and it's something that just resonates with me, I'm really confident on them.

"I don't know why but every time we come here we are happy - as soon as we land in San Diego, we're in our spot. And I was able to come out on top."

  12. 'This is for Seve'published at 01:23 BST 21 June 2021

    Rahm -6 (F)

Jon Rahm, speaking to American television:

"I'm a big believer in karma and after what happened a couple of weeks ago, I stayed really positive knowing that big things were coming.

"I didn't know what it was going to be but I knew we were coming to a special place, I got my breakthrough win here and it's a very special place for my family.

"The fact my parents were able to come, I got out of Covid protocol early, I just felt like the starts were aligning. I knew my best golf was to come and I have a hard time explaining what just happened because I can't believe I made the last two putts and I'm the first Spanish player to win the US Open.

"This is definitely for Seve - I know he tried a lot, I know he wanted to win this one most of all."

Jon Rahm, of course, led the Memorial PGA event a few weeks ago but had to withdraw due to a positive Covid test.

This more than makes up for that.

    Breaking

    No miracle for Oosthuizen.

He lofts a nice chip on to the green and, for a few seconds, it threatens to spin back towards the hole as the crowd holds its breath.

But no, the ball stops. Louis Oosthuizen is the runner-up in a Major for the sixth time.

And Jon Rahm is a Major winner for the first time.

    Here he comes.

Jon Rahm's heart would be pounding if he was watching. But he's not.

    Oosthuizen -4 (17)

Think there was a bit of confusion among the spectators there - but that water hazard is treacherous. From where he was, Louis Oosthuizen must have calculated his chances of clearing it, from the rough, were slim.

But perhaps not as slim as holing it from 70-odd yards, which is what he must do to stay in the tournament.

    Oosthuizen -4 (17)

Can Louis Oosthuizen get this out of the rough and carry the pond at the front of the 18th green?

    It's some ask.

Too much of an ask, he decided. He had to lay up before the pond.
