  1. Bogey for Fleetwoodpublished at 14:31 BST 18 September 2020

    +6 Fleetwood (5), Casey (4*)

Tomny Fleetwood is another Englishman falling down the leaderboard. The world number 15 was on four over at the end of day one and started with a birdie on the first on Friday.

But that's been the only bright spot so far as a double bogey followed at the second, with another dropped shot just now at the fifth for six over.

His compatriot Paul Casey is also on six over after pars at each of his opening four holes today.

  2. Leaderboardpublished at 14:30 BST 18 September 2020

Thomas Pieters still leads after the front nine and Cabrera Bello is another European up there, at -3 after six holes.

    -6 Pieters (9)

    -5 Thomas (18:27)

    -4 Reed (18:16)

    -3 Cabrera Bello (6*), Wolff (3*), McIlroy (18:27)

    -2 Finau (4*), Oosthuizen (4), Kokrak (17:32), Todd (17:54), English (17:54)

    -1 DeChambeau (5*), Rahm (4*), Schauffele (3), Thompson (a) (17:54)

    -1 DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +2 Johnson (5*)

Bryson DeChambeau's rollercoaster start continues as he finds the centre of the cup with with a 10-feet putt on the 14th.

But Tony Finau drops a stroke after pushing his approach left and struggling to get up and down.

DJ is looking solid enough albeit a tad frustrated as he drops in close-range putt for par.

  4. Postpublished at 14:22 BST 18 September 2020

On Thursday we had the second lowest opening round in US Open history...

Will the low scoring carry on today? It seems like the general consensus is that today Winged Foot will show its fangs.

  5. Westwood drops backpublished at 14:21 BST 18 September 2020

    E Westwood (6)

England's Lee Westwood has dropped back to level par because of a bogey at the sixth after failing to down a six-footer, with it just curving away from the hole.

He was in a strong position yesterday on three under, two shots off the lead, but he's going backwards today with bogeys also at the first and second. Three over after six is his score so far on Friday.

  6. Postpublished at 14:20 BST 18 September 2020

    +8 Putnam (Withdrawn)

Andrew Putnam has called it a day after making two doubles and a bogey in his first four holes.

I've often felt like doing the same but in the American's case it looks like he is carrying an injury.

  7. Postpublished at 14:16 BST 18 September 2020

    E DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +2 Johnson (4*)

If I could hit my tee shots like Bryson DeChambeau, I reckon I could shave 12-15 shots a round off.

That's superb stuff from the American muscle man who clatters his iron shot well over 300 yards to leave him with maybe a nine or wedge to reach the dance floor.

  8. Mickelson's woes continuepublished at 14:15 BST 18 September 2020

    +9 Mickelson (3*)

Yesterday was a tough day for six-time US Open runner-up Phil Mickelson as he ended it in the bottom three because of a nine-over round of 79.

He started from the 10th today and clawed one back with a birdie at the 11th, but he's bogeyed the 12th to return to nine over. He's going to have to have a wonderful few hours if he is to be playing tomorrow.

  9. Postpublished at 14:10 BST 18 September 2020

    -6 Pieters (8)

With the overnight leader Justin Thomas not in action until 18:27 BST, Thomas Pieters is very much stealing the limelight.

But after a glorious tee shot to carry the trees down the right of the 8th he then undercooks a routine wedge on to leave himself with a 60-foot putt for birdie.

He doesn't look overly happy and then misreads his putt to drift off 10 feet or so left. Great recovery mind to sink that.

  10. Postpublished at 14:03 BST 18 September 2020

    E DeChambeau, -2 Finau, +2 Johnson (3*)

That's a snorter of a six-iron shot from Tony Finau on the 13th.

Your average club player is probably looking at a four or five iron from there but big Tony just floats one on and watches it skip past DJ's ball to bounce to within a few feet.

Four to be exact. Birdie time.

DeChambeau drifts a little left, he's on the island but he'll have a trickier putt on a slight downhill. Which he makes in two, as does DJ who pushes his first putt a fraction wide of the cup before tidying up.

  11. 13th (White Mule)published at 13:57 BST 18 September 2020

    212 yards, par 3

A relatively benign putting surface awaits but anyone missing the green faces a tough recovery. The front third of the green acts as a false front sending balls back down the hill.

  12. DeChambeau bogeys 12published at 13:49 BST 18 September 2020

    E DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +2 Johnson (3*)

    As you were on 12.

A couple of pars, from Tony Finau and Dustin Johnson, though DJ did have half a chance from 12-14 feet or so.

Not so good for Bryson DeChambeau, who looked a little unsettled over his par putt from 7-8 feet and then pushed it left of the cup. That's bogey, birdie, bogey for the Scientist.

  13. 12th (Cape)published at 13:47 BST 18 September 2020

    633 yards, par 5

A true three-shot par five and one of the longest holes in US Open history. The second shot must avoid the cross bunkers to set up a short-iron approach to the green.

The tee could be moved forward to reduce the hole to around 570 yards.

  14. Postpublished at 13:45 BST 18 September 2020

    -6 Pieters (6)

A first-round 66 equalled Thomas Pieters lowest career score in a major.

And he's looking every bit as good so far here. He's two under for the day, through six holes.

  15. Watch: The best shots from the first roundpublished at 13:39 BST 18 September 2020

Some stellar stuff early doors here particularly from Thomas Pieters en-route to the lead.

But this is well worth a watch if you fancy a quick recap on Thursday's magic.

  16. Leaderboardpublished at 13:35 BST 18 September 2020

Justin Thomas is no longer in the lead, it’s Belgium’s Thomas Pieters. Anyway in case you're wondering how the leaderboard is shaping up, here you go:

    -6 Pieters (5)

    -5 Thomas (18:27)

    -4 Cabrera Bello (4*), Wolff (13:18), Reed (18:16)

    -3 Oosthuizen (1), McIlroy (18:27)

    -2 Niemann (2*), Schauffele (13:18), Kokrak (17:32), Todd (17:54), English (17:54)

    -1 Westwood (3), DeChambeau (2*), Finau (2*), Fowler (13:18), Thompson (a) (17:54)

  17. DeChambeau moves back to one underpublished at 13:34 BST 18 September 2020

    -1 DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +2 Johnson (2*)

Looks a little cooler and breezier at Winged Foot today than it was on Thursday.

Will that and some revised (tougher) pin positions affect the scoring? We shall see.

Not that Bryson DeChambeau is overly concerned at present. The American plops a lovely wedge on to the 11th and rolls in for birdie. Job done.

  18. Fleetwood makes brilliant startpublished at 13:27 BST 18 September 2020

    +3 Fleetwood (1)

Tommy Fleetwood had a bit of a meh round on Thursday with six bogeys and two birdies.

He knows he needs a low score today to get back in the mixer and the man from Southport makes a cracking start. A pin-seeking second to the first spins back towards the hole and almost in.

I think even I'd feel confident about going up and knocking that in for birdie.

  19. Postpublished at 13:26 BST 18 September 2020

    E DeChambeau, -1 Finau, +2 Johnson (1*)

That's better from Bryson DeChambeau, who takes the skin off that one on the 11th tee.

A gentle chip on to the dance floor should present a chance to make amends for his early bogey.

  20. New leaderpublished at 13:24 BST 18 September 2020

    -6 Pieters (5)

Take a bow Thomas Pieters. The Belgian started the day just one behind overnight leader Justin Thomas and he has started strongly today with two birdies in his first five holes.

He's taking full advantage of some benign conditions at the usually rock hard Winged Foot.
