    -3 English (15)

Harris English is the latest player to apply some pressure to Justin Thomas' lead.

The American is yet to drop a shot, and sinks his third birdie of the day at the par-four 15th to move within one of his countryman.

    -3 McIlroy (13*)

Former champion Rory McIlroy isn't best pleased with his iron to the green as the ball settles about 30 feet beyond the flag on the fifth.

The Northern Irishman is playing along with Justin Rose (+4) and Adam Scott (+1).

  3. Amateur Scott moves into top 10published at 16:50 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Scott (11)

It's getting better and better for Sandy Scott as the Scottish amateur has just birdied the 11th to move to one under and into the top 10.

    The stuff of dreams.

However, Scott isn't the leading amateur so far today as American Davis Thompson is currently tied second on three under.

  5. Thompson continuing to scramblepublished at 16:47 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Thompson (15)

Here's Thompson on the 15th. He's got the sort of shot that would make you wake up with a cold sweat.

But the 21-year-old is nerveless, flopping it up and over the bunker and onto the green. The ball sidles three, four, five feet past...but he confidently strokes the par putt into the middle of the hole.

He's in a growing group at three under, one behind leader Justin Thomas.

  6. Double trouble for Daypublished at 16:46 BST 17 September 2020

    +2 Day (13*)

    Jason DayImage source, Getty Images

The par-three third at Winged Foot bites!

This is the hole Billy Casper chose to lay up on in every round when he won in 1959.

Jason Day might wish he'd followed suit - instead the Australian, who started his round on the 10th tee, makes double bogey to drop back to two over.

    Ouchy.

  7. Woods promising run comes to an endpublished at 16:46 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Thomas (13); E Woods (13), +3 Morikawa (13)

Another somewhat badly misjudged long putt from Justin Thomas as the ball eases about five feet past the 13th hole. It's par for him.

Woods drops a shot which, for him, is a bit of a shame after a run of three birdies and a par.

  8. Work to do for Willettpublished at 16:45 BST 17 September 2020

    +5 Willett (14*)

There's a lot of work for England's Danny Willett to do as the 2016 Masters champion is well off the pace on five over, with only two players - Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard and Finland's Sami Valimaki - having worse scores.

It was an eventful start, from the 10th, for Willett with four bogeys and a birdie in his opening six holes, with another couple of bogeys coming at the first and second.

If you're a fan of American sports movies from the 1980s, you might remember Caddyshack, in which Danny Noonan caddies for Ty Webb (Chevy Chase) at Bushwood Country Club, where gopher-hunting Carl Spackler (Bill Murray) works as a groundskeeper.

Anyway, Noonan was played by actor Michael O'Keefe, who was actually a real caddie at Winged Foot during summers in the early '70s.

With the venue hosting the US Open, O'Keefe wrote a piece for Golf.com asking any player to let him caddie for them. Danny Balin, the head pro at Fresh Meadow Country Club, Long Island, answered his call.

Balin, who qualified as one of the top three finishers from 2019 PGA Professional of the Year standings, had O'Keefe on the bag for his practice rounds, before his regular caddie arrived.

    -4 Thomas (12); -1 Woods (12), +3 Morikawa (12)

Tiger Woods picks a four iron as he tries to follow Justin Thomas by finding the 13th green, however it doesn't quite work out. It appears he's found the bunker on the left.

    We shall see.

US PGA champion Collin Morikawa, who's had a mini 'mare, is safely on to the green. Well done him.

  11. English trio in top 30published at 16:38 BST 17 September 2020

    +1 Wallace (15), Waring (14), Pepperell (9)

We have three English players on one over and all in the top 30. They are Matt Wallace, Paul Waring and Eddie Pepperell.

Wallace has just birdied the 15th after three successive bogeys, which had threatened to ruin his day. He had started off with bogeys at the second and third but moved to one under with three birdies in his next six holes.

  12. Thompson in troublepublished at 16:37 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Thompson (14)

Davis Thompson elects for safety on the par-four 15th. It's only 422 yards so he takes an iron off the tee. He's tugged it a little though and the downslope helps the ball scuttle through the first cut of rough - which is an inch deep - and on to the collar of the second cut - which is four inches deep.

A tricky second coming up for the amateur. And his clubface gets caught up in the thick stuff on his downswing. The result is a pull to the left of the green and into deeper rough. There's a bunker between him and the green too.

    E Conners (11*)

Just the seven players currently in the red at Winged Foot right now - this is a venue that regularly produces winners over par.

Canadian Corey Conners was among those a minute ago, dusting himself down from successive bogeys through the turn to birdie the first - his 10th - and move to one under par, only to drop another shot at the second.

    Tricky, this track...

  14. Postpublished at 16:33 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Thomas (12); -1 Woods (12), +3 Morikawa (12)

Woods has it.. he strolls up to the hole thinking he has the birdie, but it lips out.

    Extraordinary misfortune.

Thomas also fails with his birdie attempt by really misjudging the break - IOW there wasn't much of a break.

    Pars for both.

  15. Hatton on the ropespublished at 16:31 BST 17 September 2020

    +3 Hatton (13*)

England's Tyrrell Hatton was a very, very early leader earlier today after birdies at both of his opening two holes - the 10th and 11th.

But the wheels have come off a bit and he's not had a birdie since. Indeed, he has dropped shots at the 14th, 17th, 18th, first and, just recently, fourth.

Five holes for him left today as he will be looking to end day one on a bright note. He's on three over at the moment and dropping down the leaderboard.

  16. Meanwhile...published at 16:30 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Thomas (11); -1 Woods (11), +1 Morikawa (10)

Birdie chances for Woods and Thomas at the 12th.

It's easy to feel excited at this stage.

This like that scene near the end of Endgame, when the other heroes... OK, maybe some of you aren't into that.

  17. McIlroy back to three underpublished at 16:27 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy (12*)

    Birdie.

    Minus three.

    Tied second.

  18. Birdie for Reedpublished at 16:26 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Reed (12)

Patrick Reed is having a good day after getting over that double bogey at five. He birdied the sixth, carded an ace at the par-three seventh and has now moved to two under par with a birdie on the mammoth par-five 12th - making a mockery of those 643 yards... he's within touching distance of JT at the top.

  19. Thompson scramblingpublished at 16:25 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Thompson (14)

Is Davis Thompson unravelling a bit? He's wayward off the tee on the par-four 14th, into the deep stuff.

But he hacks out to the front of the green and plays a lovely chip up to a couple of feet and he's in for par.

  20. Great Scottpublished at 16:25 BST 17 September 2020

    E Scott (9), +1 MacIntyre (9)

What a day it has been so far for 22-year-old Scottish amateur Sandy Scott as he is currently tied 10th on level par after his front nine.

Scott, who qualifies as he was sixth in the World Amateur Golf Rankings at August's cut-off point, has just produced a birdie at the ninth.

His compatriot Robert MacIntyre has also just birdied the ninth to move to one over and that was much needed after he had bogeyed the eighth and came up with a double bogey five on the third earlier on.
