  1. Another amateur starts brilliantlypublished at 17:39 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rousaud (1)

Spanish amateur Eduard Rousaud, one of 13 in the field, has just had the dream start, driving down the middle of the first and then holing his second for an eagle two!

The 20-year-old, fifth in the amateur world rankings, turns and high-fives his caddie. He's set a high bar for himself there though.

  2. Leaderboardpublished at 17:39 BST 17 September 2020

Two of the Brat Pack still lead the US Open.

    -4 Reed (16), Thomas (16)

    -3 McIlroy (16*)

    -2 Kokrak (F), Todd (F), English (F), Sabbatini (2), Rousard (a) (1), Lorenzo-Vera (1)

    -1 Thompson (a) (F), Paratore (2), Norris (2)

  3. 8th (Arena)published at 17:38 BST 17 September 2020

    490 yards, par 4:

The beginning of a daunting three-hole stretch, the eighth is a long, difficult dogleg with a very undulating green with a pronounced ridge which runs diagonally across for a real putting challenge.

  4. McIlroy set for good first daypublished at 17:38 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy (16*)

It's an easy par for McIlroy on the seventh. Two to go.

    No time for calamities now.

  5. Thompson finishes under parpublished at 17:36 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Thompson (F)

Davis Thompson is on the last. He's pushed his tee shot into a fairway bunker but smashes out in fine style to find the green.

Two putts and he'll be signing for a one-under-par 69. Yes, he was at four under after 11 and has had a rough couple of hours since then, but he will surely be delighted with his debut US Open round.

The first putt cosies up to the hole and he taps in for a one-under finish but he might not be the lowest-scoring amateur of the day...

  6. Thomas waves wand in bunker; Woods waves wand on greenpublished at 17:34 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Thomas (15); E Woods (16), +3 Morikawa (15)

The ball against the front of the bunker poses few problems for Justin Thomas, whose sand-iron shot leaves the ball only a few feet from the hole. Magic.

Woods with an uphill birdie chance from 40 feet... sinks it.

  7. Sullivan ends stronglypublished at 17:31 BST 17 September 2020

    +1 Sullivan (F*)

England's Andy Sullivan, playing in the US Open for the first time since 2016, has had a good end to his day with birdies at two of his last three holes - the seventh and ninth.

But he will be ruing his double bogeys on the 14th and fourth, and he ends Thursday on one over after a round of 71.

  8. 'I walked off 18 patting myself on the back'published at 17:25 BST 17 September 2020

When I spoke to Geoff Ogilvy, who won at Winged Foot in 2006 at five over par, he said his caddie told him just to par the final four holes, and that might be enough.

"The last four holes was really vivid, I was in a good head space, regardless of how Phil (Mickelson) played the last," he said.

"I walked off 18 patting myself on the back going ‘well, you did what you wanted to do, finished nicely, if that makes a play-of, brilliant, if that wins, brilliant. If it loses, brilliant. I was content with my body of work.

"I watched from the scorers’ hut with Ian Poulter, who I played with that day, which is a good pairing for me because we’re mates, he’s loose and a lot of fun.

"We saw Phil doing what he was doing on the screen behind, we had a nice little moment where he was like ‘well this is going to work out pretty well for you, well done…’

"We watched Phil do what he did and he made six at the last, and I got very fortunate. Right place at the right time."

  9. Oh noooooo!published at 17:24 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy (15*)

No birdie either for Rory McIlroy. That should have been at least a birdie from four feet on the sixth - why does he keep missing those putts from that length?!!

Par putt and we move on to the seventh.

  10. Thompson's slide continuespublished at 17:20 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Thompson (17)

I hope Davis Thompson did get a selfie next to a leaderboard earlier because the young amateur is understandably struggling to close this out.

He's tugged his drive on the 17th and his second also stays left and is well short of the green. His wedge is on line but thuds into the green and doesn't release forward.

He's got about 20 feet for par...he's a little tentative and that will be another dropped shot.

Thompson needs to par the last to become just the second amateur after Bobby Jones in 1929 to score an under par round at Winged Foot in a US Open.

  11. Postpublished at 17:19 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy (14*)

No eagle for Rory McIlroy as his putt breaks a little right and comes up short. A birdie would make him the co-leader on the course, though.

  12. McIlroy with an eagle chance!published at 17:15 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy (14*)

What a fantastic shot from tee to green on the 362-yard par-four sixth.

    Could he?

  13. Lewis ends day one on four overpublished at 17:14 BST 17 September 2020

    +4 Lewis (F*), Poulter (13*)

England's Tom Lewis is done for the day and that's a first-round score of 74, for four over. He's another one to have struggled on the fourth, with a double bogey six to his name.

This is his third US Open start, but he needs a good Friday if he is to see any action on Saturday and Sunday.

Fellow Englishman Ian Poulter is also on four over, with five holes to go, still searching for his first birdie of the day.

  14. Woods produces a great escapepublished at 17:13 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Thomas (14); +1 Woods (14), +3 Morikawa (14)

Tiger Woods cuts across the ball with his bunker-shot and it lands a some feet beyond the flag - a brilliant effort taking into consideration of where he was.

  15. Reed joins share of leadpublished at 17:10 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Reed (15)

    Oh, hello!

Patrick Reed puts his hand up and asks to be one of the frat pack, nestling his way alongside Justin Thomas up top.

The former Masters champion makes it three birdies in his past four holes to move to four under par among his fellow American. He's on the charge.

  16. Thomas remains in joint-leadpublished at 17:08 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Thomas (14); +1 Woods (14), +3 Morikawa (14)

A par on the 14th when it could have been birdie for joint leader-on-the-course Justin Thomas.

Tiger Woods makes another bogey to drop back into the plus figures again.

  17. Kokrak sets clubhouse leadpublished at 17:07 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Kokrak (F)

Cracking day for Jason Kokrak, who sets the clubhouse target of two under par.

Four birdies, two bogeys having started on the 10th, but no dropped shots on the back nine.

    Lovey stuff.

  18. Thompson drops shotpublished at 17:04 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Thompson (16)

Another bogey for Davis Thompson on the par-four 16th. He pays the price for leaking his tee shot out to the right and into the rough.

The amateur needs to dig deep over the last couple of holes to not undo all the good work he's done so far.

  19. McIlroy eases to par to stay in touchpublished at 17:01 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 McIlroy (14*)

Maybe it wasn't that far away from the hole for McIlroy!

    It's par. Four to go.

A finish around where he is now would be a tremendous first day's work.

  20. Successive bogeys for McDowellpublished at 16:59 BST 17 September 2020

    +3 McDowell (13)

A bad couple of holes for Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell as he follows a bogey at the 11th with another at the 12th.

McDowell, who won the US Open at Pebble Beach in California back in 2010, also had a disastrous fourth as he took six at the 453-yard par four.

But it's not all been bad news as he has a couple of birdies - on the sixth and ninth - for his efforts today.
