    -2 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau E (9)

Tony Finau finds himself in a bunker with a face like a cliff, chop that out. He does, superbly, to within a dustbin lid. Lovely stuff.

  2. Westwood two off the leadpublished at 20:54 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Westwood (2*)

Lee Westwood produces a cracking iron from 130+ yards out to the second tee - he's got about four feet to the hole for a birdie.

    HOLED!

The 47-year-old, looking for his first major, goes to within two of the lead.

  3. 10th (Pulpit)published at 20:50 BST 17 September 2020

    214 yards, par 3

Ben Hogan famously characterised the 10th as "a three-iron into some guy's bedroom" and it is likely to be one of the toughest holes in relation to par.

  4. DeChambeau salvages par, Finau birdiespublished at 20:49 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau E (9)

Good recovery from Bryson DeChambeau to save par, he's yet to drop a shot through nine holes.

Tony Finau is back on the money, a second birdie of the day to wipe out those earlier back-to-back bogeys. How Dustin Johnson could do with one himself...

  5. Stop the clockspublished at 20:48 BST 17 September 2020

Phil Mickelson has hit a fairway! He's playing the ninth. Can he take advantage?

No. Of course he can't. Two straight shots is too much for Lefty and he looks away in disgust as his second leaks out to the left and into more deep trouble.

A replay, with the on course microphone turned right up, reveals Mickelson let out a huge sigh and said "I'm sick of this." So he's not doing it because he likes chipping.

Jon Rahm, from the rough, punches his second down the fairway, hoping for a chip and a putt for a birdie.

  6. Ace!published at 20:46 BST 17 September 2020

    E Zalatoris (7)

    How about that!

A second hole in one on the opening day at Winged Foot, after Patrick Reed's earlier.

This time it's Will Zalatoris - the world number 149 zips his tee shot at the par-three seventh a couple of feet in front of the flag, it wriggles on a touch and disappears to a smattering round of applause from the handful of onlookers.

    Lovely stuff.

  7. Mickelson drops anotherpublished at 20:45 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rahm, +2 Mickelson, +3 Casey

Phil Mickelson is out with the aviator shades again today but he's not top gun in his three-ball (sorry).

He wanders up to the green to check out where best to pitch his third shot. Then settles over his ball, the familiar twiddle of the club before flicking the ball on to the dancefloor. His radar is a little off though and he's not making the par putt either. Another shot gone.

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm has gone tee to green in regulation but he's got a little dribbler down the hill for birdie. He might as well have blown the ball he hit it so deftly. No dice though. The ball looked in all the way but wandered an inch right at the death.

No sight of Paul Casey, but the scoreboard says he holed a five-footer for par.

  8. Leaderboardpublished at 20:44 BST 17 September 2020

They’re bunching up at -2! 10 of them! I thought Winged Foot was meant to be the hardest golf course in the world?!

    -5 Thomas (F)

    -4 Reed (F)

    -3 McIlroy (F), Sabbatini (13), Pieters (13*), Niemann (10), Fowler (7),

    -2 Kokrak (F), Todd (F), English (F), Norris (13), Long (12), Cabrera Bello (11), Westwood (10*), DeChambeau (8), Rahm (8), Wolff (7)

  9. Postpublished at 20:41 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau +1 (8)

Is DeChambeau's 'hit it as far as possible on every hole' approach about to come unstuck?

The American finds the bunker at the par-five ninth, clips out and then his third fails to anchor down on the green. Needs an up and down to avoid a first blemish on today's card.

  10. 'I did not finish off the round like I needed to' - Woodspublished at 20:37 BST 17 September 2020

There was one stage during Tiger Woods' round where he was one under having made three birdies on the spin. Then he had a bit of a 'mare coming in - a bogey, double bogey finish.

The 44-year-old 15-time major winner said after his 73: "It was a bit of ebb and flow to the round.

"I did not finish off the round like I needed to. I made a bunch of putts in the middle part of the round.

"It seemed like most of my drives on the front nine landed in the fairway and ended up in bad spots, and I tried to stay as patient as possible, and unfortunately just did not finish off my round the way I needed to."

  11. Will Phil ever hit a fairway again?published at 20:31 BST 17 September 2020

Phil Mickelson is playing military golf - altogether now, left, right, left, right...

The six-time US Open runner-up is wild again off the eighth tee and tries to carve his second under and round a tree but he doesn't get enough action on it and watches it thud into more thick cabbage on the other side of the fairway.

  12. Get involvedpublished at 20:30 BST 17 September 2020

    #bbcgolf

Jimmy C - The course is looking pretty playable at the moment. Greens look green and fair (as opposed to brown and unplayable) and the rough is penal but not stupidly tough. I’d expect that the setup will get harder over the course of the week, but encouraging start.

Dreddy Tennis - So much for the challenge of Winged Foot! DeChambeau's 'overpower the course' strategy may yet bear fruit at this rate....

The-Artful-Dodga - Would be good to see McIlroy sustain a challenge. A good start.

  13. Westwood steady over first ninepublished at 20:29 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Westwood (*18)

A very solid par on the 18th from the 47-year-old Englishman.

It's just the one bogey among the three birdies and pars as he makes his way to the first tee.

Could this be... no, we'll stop right now.

  14. Fleetwood failingpublished at 20:28 BST 17 September 2020

    +4 Fleetwood (8*)

I was reading earlier today that there was a lot of money being staked on Tommy Fleetwood to win this week.

It's not a massive surprise because he's got a decent pedigree with a second place two years ago and fourth the year before.

However, the Southport man is struggling today. A run of three successive bogeys has left him four over after just eight holes.

  15. Postpublished at 20:27 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau +1 (8)

Dustin Johnson brings a rollercoaster few holes to an end up with a two-putt par.

Tony Finau comes at the green from the opposite side of the fairway but with the same result.

Bryson DeChambeau yanked his tee shot a little left but also recovers to get down in four.

  16. Niemann one off the leadpublished at 20:25 BST 17 September 2020

    -4 Niemann (9)

Chile's Joaquin Niemann is having the round he dreamed off last night. Another birdie on the ninth, a fourth and when you add in five pars, that's a tremendous start.

He's only one behind our leader Justin Thomas.

  18. Rahm on the movepublished at 20:21 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rahm, +1 Mickelson, +3 Casey (7)

On to the seventh for Jon Rahm and the Spaniard fires his tee short on the par- three hole right at the flag. Simple birdie putt to get to two under.

Regulation pars for Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey

  19. 'Just keep it in the short stuff' - McIlroypublished at 20:16 BST 17 September 2020

Northern Ireland's four-time major champion Rory McIlroy came back into a little bit of form with a tied-eighth at the Tour Championship having not managed a top-10 finish since the resumption.

The 31-year-old is only two off the lead after an excellent 67.

The 2011 champion said: "I put the ball in play much more today than I have done in the previous few weeks. That bodes well.

"That's what you need to do around here, just keep it in the short stuff, and then the greens are still receptive enough where you can give yourself some chances."

  20. Postpublished at 20:13 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Rahm; +1 Mickelson, +3 Casey (6)

Jon Rahm has an attempt to move back to two under and it's a fantastic effort from 66 feet, but it turns just a bit too much and he has to settle for a par at the sixth.

There are pars too for his playing partners - Paul Casey and Phil Mickelson - the American's first of the day.
