  1. Postpublished at 21:59 BST 17 September 2020

    +5 Casey (12)

It's not been a day to shout about for England's Paul Casey. He's had no birdies and five bogeys and his tee shot on the par three 13th ends up between a couple of trees, so it could be getting worse pretty soon.

  2. DJ falls further adriftpublished at 21:56 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 DeChambeau, -2 Finau, +3 Johnson (13)

Dustin Johnson chips on from the fringes but again leaves himself a little short, not quite clicking for the world number today.

Bryson DeChambeau goes through his pre-putt technique, sticks out his forearm like he's a Test batsman on the defensive, and jabs it wide of the cup.

Having missed the green with his tee shot, that's a first bogey of the day for the American - he'll be disappointed, back to two under and three off the lead.

DJ has his caddie stand legs apart over his line, while he focuses on the ball from behind the hole - will have to get my mates to do this drill for me next weekend...

It's a par putt, but doesn't sink. Another dropped shot for Johnson.

  3. Postpublished at 21:51 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rahm (12)

A gorgeous third shot on the par-five 12th has given Jon Rahm a 10-ft chance to move up to three under and tied third.

But it comes up a bit too short and that's another one that has slipped through the fingers of the Spanish world number two.

  4. 13th (White Mule)published at 21:50 BST 17 September 2020

    212 yards, par 3

A relatively benign putting surface awaits but anyone missing the green faces a tough recovery. The front third of the green acts as a false front sending balls back down the hill.

  5. Rickie has the flow!published at 21:50 BST 17 September 2020

    Andrew Murray
    BBC Radio 5 live commentator

There's no finer putting stroke than Rickie Fowler's. It just flows, he has a natural rhythm. He hits it out of the centre of the putter every time.

  6. Finau birdiespublished at 21:43 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 DeChambeau, -2 Finau, +2 Johnson (12)

Over on the 12th and Bryson DeChambeau is licking his lips. It's 643 yards, easily reachable in two for the big-hitting American.

But his tee shot plunges into the rough having travelled about half the distance to the hole. He hacks one 150 yards or so down the left, still in the thick stuff though.

His third is better, finding the green, 25 feet from the hole. Two putts. Par.

Dustin Johnson, also long off the tee, misses a 12-foot birdie putt to stay at two over.

But Tony Finau is moving in the right direction. Back-to-back birdies for the American who gets up and down from a greenside bunker.

  7. Winged foot has been clipped!published at 21:41 BST 17 September 2020

    Iain Carter
    BBC Sport commentator

Winged foot has been clipped by the sheer excellence of some of the world's best golfers. Thomas has shot the lowest ever opening round score on this course. It really was special!

  8. Oosthuizen & Johnson light up Winged Footpublished at 21:37 BST 17 September 2020

Two major winners with two major shots.

South African 2010 Open winner Louis Oosthuizen was +1 before a remarkable 148-yard eagle at the par-four second.

    He's now one under.

And then there's Zach Johnson (E). His putt will be replayed again and again on social media. The two-time major winner played his own version of marble madness on the first by sending his putt long and way right before the slope brought it back to the hole.

The player was dumbstruck after making it.

  10. Postpublished at 21:29 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rahm; +3 Mickelson; +4 Casey (11)

Chances for all of the playing group on the 11th to make some ground up.

Phil Mickelson then misses an eight-footer so that's par for him, Paul Casey fails to sink it from nine feet and Jon Rahm lips one out from close range.

No-one takes their opportunities at that one so it's as you were.

  11. Fowler falters under TV glare againpublished at 21:26 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Fowler (10)

You know that feeling when you've been going along swimmingly and then you get asked to play through a group and you hit your worst drive of the day?

I think Rickie Fowler is suffering from that today. He's on the par-three 10th. It's almost like he knows the camera is on him and he dumps his tee shot into a bunker.

He splashes out to 10 feet. Tough par putt coming up. Too tough. Bogey.

  12. Finau continues to climbpublished at 21:16 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau -1 (11)

That's unlucky for DJ, the approach that almost dropped into the can actually back pedalled a lot further away from it than I initially thought - it leaves him an 18-footer up the slope for birdie, and he leaves it just short.

DeChambeau is in for par. But who's that creeping up the leaderboard? It's Tony Finau!

Back-to-back birdies for the American as he plays tactical golf, leaving his tee shot short of the bunkers and then clipping one into the middle of the green - might not surprise you to learn Bryson attempted to drive the green...

Finau is up to one under par.

  13. Another bogey for 'Phil the Thrill'published at 21:15 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rahm, +3 Mickelson, +4 Casey (10)

Phil Mickelson called himself "an idiot" when he threw away victory the last time the US Open was held at Winged Foot in 2006. He needed a par down the last to win and double bogeyed to hand the title to Geoff Ogilvy.

I don't think he's going to be in a similar position come Sunday evening.

Another bogey for 'Phil the Thrill' - this time on the par-three 10th after a trip to a bunker.

We finally get a look at Paul Casey, but just as he slides a par putt wide.

Jon Rahm makes a decent two-putt to stay as he was.

  14. Westwood back to two underpublished at 21:14 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Westwood (3*)

Sadly for Lee Westwood fans, the 47-year-old bogeys the third after missing a 10-footer - he did well to find himself within putting distance from the bunker.

He goes again. Six holes to go.

Elsewhere, fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick has been pretty solid with pars all the way, bar the double bogey at the 13th and then a welcome birdie at the first. He is currently a commendable one over.

  15. Fowler on the prowlpublished at 21:11 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 Fowler (9)

Rickie Fowler suddenly appears on the screen. The American has holed three birdies in his opening six holes to put himself two shots off the lead.

Sadly, the camera focuses on him just as he hits a wild one on the ninth. His second shot plunges into the rough to the right of the green. He knocks his third on the green but it is 22 feet left for birdie.

At least it's uphill. He rattles it a couple of feet past. Par

  16. Leaderboardpublished at 21:10 BST 17 September 2020

They’re now bunching up at -3! Seven of them, five familiar faces.

    -5 Thomas (F)

    -4 Reed (F)

    -3 McIlroy (F), Norris (15), Pieters (14*), Cabrera Bello (12), Niemann (11), DeChambeau (10), Fowler (8)

    -2 Kokrak (F), Todd (F), English (F), Sabbatini (14), Westwood (12*), Rahm (9), Wolff (8)

  17. Postpublished at 21:09 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau E (10)

What an approach from Dustin Johnson! The world number one nearly drains one from 114 yards, a sweetly struck pitch that landed inches in front of the pin and wheeled back several feet past it.

Bryson DeChambeau has a tricky lie in some Winged Foot shrubbery, and sizes it up like he's tending to his allotment. The American manages to hack it out but can't make it stick on the dance floor.

  18. Mickelson scrambles parpublished at 21:01 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Rahm, +2 Mickelson +3 Casey (9)

Jon Rahm has been having a long chat with his caddie before taking on his third to the par-five ninth. He's far enough back to hit a high one in but he's left himself an 18-foot birdie look.

Phil Mickelson has got lucky. His ball has ended up on a patch of short grass - perhaps a tee box that the members will play from. Wedge in hand, this should go close. The ball skips and comes to a halt a dozen feet past, no reverse gear though. 6/10 by Lefty's lofty standard.

Rahm is a foot shy with his birdie attempt. What can Phil do? Two putts, par.

The cameras have stopped following England's Paul Casey, which is a shame because he hit a 390-yard drive according to the scoreboard! Although, it's also suggesting he missed a three-footer for birdie - knocking it 14 feet by and then holing the par putt!

  19. 11th (Billows)published at 21:00 BST 17 September 2020

    384 yards, par 4:

Most players will lay up short of the bunker on the left-hand side of the fairway to leave a short-iron approach offering a realistic birdie chance after the previous tough stretch.

  20. DeChambeau moves within twopublished at 20:59 BST 17 September 2020

    -3 DeChambeau, Johnson +2, Finau E (10)

Oh, Bryson. DeChambeau follows up his wonderful tee shot on the par-three 10th by rolling in a lengthy birdie putt. Right on the money, and he's two off the lead.

Dustin Johnson looks to conjure up his own long-ranger but leaves it a few rotations short.
