American Brandon Wu follows a bogey on the short 10th, with a birdie on the 11th to join Rory McIlroy in the lead.

American amateur Davis Thompson is also off to a flier. Birdies on the sixth and seventh holes, after five pars, has seen him jump up to the top of the leaderboard.

And Jordan Spieth's good run continues with a third consecutive birdie getting him back to level par.

  5. Birdie for Morikawapublished at 14:35 BST 17 September 2020

    E Thomas (5); +1 Woods (4), E Morikawa (5)

Collin Morikawa picks up a welcome birdie at the fifth to go back to level. Brings a smile to his face.

Thomas fails to copy his playing partner - he should have.

Tiger Woods is about to drop another.

  7. Wu going strongpublished at 14:32 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 Wu (9)

American Brandon Wu, 23 - one of several promising young American players - is at two under after the front nine.

If Collin Morikawa can do it, then...

  8. Spieth fighting hardpublished at 14:30 BST 17 September 2020

    +1 Spieth (5)

Is it really five years since Jordan Spieth won the US Open at Chambers Bay? Wow!

The American has tumbled down the world rankings recently though and he opened bogey, double bogey today. But birdies on the fourth and fifth holes have kept him interested.

  10. Postpublished at 14:27 BST 17 September 2020

There are 11 players under par at the moment - so not as bad as initially feared. Obviously there is a way to go.

  11. Waring making chargepublished at 14:25 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Waring (6)

There are plenty of English golfers near the top of the leaderboard - Paul Waring being the latest to join the party.

He's had back-to-back birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to get to one under.

  12. McIlroy pumpedpublished at 14:24 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 McIlroy (4*)

McIlroy has the eye of the tiger at the moment. A confident putt at the 14th just drifts past the hole.

In full flow, he's a beautiful sight.

The Northern Irish player has Justin Rose and Adam Scott to keep him company over the first two rounds.

  13. 5th (Long Lane)published at 14:22 BST 17 September 2020

    502 yards, par 4

A good birdie chance for Woods, Thomas and Morikawa when played as a short par five in the 2006 US Open, the fifth has been shortened slightly to a tough par four.

The fairway is guarded by trees on the left and a deep bunker on the right.

  14. Bogey for Hattonpublished at 14:22 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Hatton (5*)

Tyrrell Hatton drops his first shot of the tournament at the par-four 14th, his fifth hole. A slightly wayward tee shot finds the first cut of rough and his second is also in the thick stuff.

He ends up with an eight-foot par putt but cannot sink it. It's still an excellent start.

  15. Postpublished at 14:19 BST 17 September 2020

    E Thomas (4); +1 Woods (4), +1 Morikawa (4)

Justin Thomas does save par though following a long, long putt to just a few feet of the hole.

It's a bogey for Woods at the par-four fourth from four feet or so.

    Not a bad bogey really.

  16. Postpublished at 14:16 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Thomas (3); E Woods (3), +1 Morikawa (3)

    No he won't.

  17. Postpublished at 14:15 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Thomas (3); E Woods (3), +1 Morikawa (3)

Tiger Woods' putt from off the green on the fourth hole appears to have a decent line, but the ball then races off the edge.

He'll probably save par - very much par for the course at the moment...a ha ha..ha ha.

  18. McIlroy birdies anotherpublished at 14:08 BST 17 September 2020

    -2 McIlroy (4*)

McIlroy picks up a another shot with a tap-in. Interesting. Very interesting.

No top 10s since the resumption.

    * McIlroy began his round on the 10th

  19. Rose flowspublished at 14:06 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Rose (4*)

Justin Rose has had a great start like his Ryder Cup team-mate and playing partner Rory McIlroy.

The Englishman is a grass-blade width away from making back-to-back birdies with his putt on the par-three 13th.

  20. Postpublished at 14:03 BST 17 September 2020

    -1 Thomas (2); E Woods (2), +1 Morikawa (2)

Morikawa and Woods somehow make par on the par-three third - channelling their inner David Blaine.

Thomas, however, drops back down to level. Channelling his inner 'someone not good at escapology'.
