What struck me about the audio is the complete lack of structure to the discussion and decision making processes. Why aren't those procedures standardised? Why are they chatting like they're down the pub? What means do they have to assure the quality and accuracy of their decisions? None. None at all. They need to look at how it's managed in that room, install professional standards and it may just improve.

We have plenty of reaction to Tuesday night's Champions League and Premier League matches coming up, but will also include responses to that revealing VAR audio.

Coming up is a question from Adam in Southport that will no doubt form part of the PGMOL review into the incident...

    The Daily Express

We finish our round-up of this morning's national newspapers with the Express back page, which leads on Manchester United's Champions League defeat at home to Galatasaray.

Erik ten Hag's side slipped to a sixth defeat in 10 games, with the Express report saying that the "crisis deepens" at Old Trafford as the "ailing giants are left in the mire".

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya's "howler" is also highlighted in the Gunners' 2-1 defeat at French side Lens.

    Wednesday's back pages

    The Times

The Times focusses on the moment that VAR officials realise they have made a mistake in the review of Luis Diaz's disallowed goal for Liverpool against Tottenham.

There is also a piece on Newcastle's England defender Kieran Trippier, who vows "I'll stop Mbappe" as Eddie Howe's side prepare to host Paris St-Germain in the Champions League tonight.

    Wednesday's back pages

    The Daily Telegraph

The Telegraph also leads on the VAR audio, highlighting the fact that video assistant referee Darren England dismissed calls to "stop the game" after the game had restarted.

But the broadsheet's main sports page also features a stark assessment of Manchester United's defeat to Galatasaray, saying the club is now "staring into the abyss" after Mauro Icardi's 81st-minute winner condemned Erik ten Hag's side to a second defeat in the Champions League.

  6. 'VAR is cursed!'published at 07:19 BST 4 October 2023

    Wednesday's back pages

    The Daily Mail

The view in the Mail is clear.

The back page assesses the "four-letter panic" after the "blunder" that led to Luis Diaz's strike wrongly being ruled out for offside.

The report also looks at calls to halt the game "before officials froze" and considers what next for the Premier League's VAR system.

There is also room on the back page for a line on Arsenal and Manchester United's Champions League defeats, describing them as "Euro trash".
