  1. Klopp incoming...published at 13:21 BST 4 October 2023

    Liverpool v Union Saint-Gilloise (20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and defender Trent Alexander-Arnold are about to face the media for a pre-match news conference before Thursday's Europa League tie at home to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Reds top Group E after opening their campaign with a 3-1 win at LASK, while Thursday's opponents Union Saint-Gilloise drew 1-1 at home to Toulouse.

Yet something tells me the Europa League will not be the main line of questioning today...

There is no place for Blackpool striker Shayne Lavery, Oxford United defender Ciaron Brown or Portsmouth winger Gavin Whyte, who have all recently returned from injury.

Uncapped Brad Lyons retains his place while long-term injured quartet Stuart Dallas, Corry Evans, Shane Ferguson and captain Steven Davis are still out.

Northern Ireland have two home Group H qualifying games later this month at Windsor Park, against bottom side San Marino on 14 October and against Slovenia three days later.

Michael O'Neill's men have won just three points from their opening six matches in what has been an injury-hit campaign.

Scotland are without Kieran Tierney for this month's Euro 2024 qualifier in Spain and the friendly with France.

The on-loan Arsenal left-back, 26, was replaced during the first half of Real Sociedad's 3-0 La Liga derby win over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Scott McKenna or the returning Liam Cooper may deputise on the left of defence after being named in the squad.

England-born Elliot Anderson is not included after briefly training with the squad for last month's games.

Luton forward Jacob Brown replaces Hearts' Lawrence Shankland while Celtic left-back Greg Taylor also returns.

A draw or win for Steve Clarke's side in Spain would ensure qualification to next summer's finals in Germany.

A winding-up petition that threatened to end Southend United's 116-year history has been dismissed after the High Court was told the football club had paid off its tax debt.

The club owed an estimated £275,000 to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

However, an HMRC representative told the High Court it had been paid in full and asked the judge to withdraw its petition.

Separately, Blues announced on Tuesday it had agreed the sale of the club.

Birmingham City owner Tom Wagner has promised a lifetime ban for the home fan who racially abused Blues winger Juninho Bacuna in Tuesday's 4-1 Championship win over Huddersfield.

The abuse was reported to match officials both by Netherlands-born Curacao international Bacuna and his Huddersfield opponent Tom Edwards.

The game was then stopped by match referee Sam Allison.

"It is disheartening to hear such behaviour exists," said Wagner.

Nine games, eight goals. Jude Bellingham's start to life at Real Madrid - after joining from Borussia Dortmund - has been simply sensational.

His arms aloft celebration - seen again following his goal-of-the-season contender in Tuesday's Champions League win at Napoli - is already becoming iconic among Real fans, while the Spanish media are purring in their admiration.

'A little Di Stefano, a little Zidane' and 'It was like Maradona' were two of the latest headlines.

"I believe in myself, but I didn't know it would be this good," said Bellingham. "I owe it to the staff and my team-mates."

Asked about any comparison with former Argentina and Napoli great Diego Maradona, though, Bellingham was quick to downplay them.

"That's a bit too much," he said. "It was a nice goal. From what I've seen on YouTube and documentaries, his quality was a bit more than mine, or a lot more. I'm just trying to contribute in a Jude way.

"It may have been one of my best goals. We were facing a great team and in a great stadium. The most important thing has been the victory and having contributed to it. It is important to continue with this pace."

On Sunday RKC Waalwijk said Vaessen is "continuing to recover" after further tests at hospital.

A fan who was attended to for a medical emergency during Leyton Orient's League One match with Lincoln City on Tuesday has died.

The man received treatment in the East Stand of the Brisbane Road stadium during the second half of the match.

Medics arrived within four minutes of being called at 21:28 BST to treat an unwell supporter in the stands.

About 20 fans ran on to the pitch to alert referee Stephen Martin to the incident and urge him to halt the game.

The match was eventually paused for an hour before being abandoned, with 82 minutes having been played.

"We were called yesterday at 21:28 to reports of a person becoming unwell at Leyton Orient Football Club, on Brisbane Road," a London Ambulance Service spokesperson told BBC Sport.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an incident response officer, two medics in fast-response cars and an ambulance crew.

"Our first medic arrived in approximately four minutes. We treated a man at the scene, but very sadly, despite our teams' best efforts, he was later pronounced dead."

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin believes Burnley can push on from Tuesday's win over Luton Town after enduring a challenging start to the season.

The Clarets recorded their first Premier League win of the campaign at Kenilworth Road, with goals from Lyle Foster and Jacob Bruun Larsen enough to see off the Hatters.

"I've actually been feeling really sorry for Burnley because they've had a stinker of a start to the season in terms of their draw," Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast.

"The only game they'll really be disappointed by is the Nottingham Forest draw.

"They've had a horribly hard start to the season, so [after] getting that result, Vincent [Kompany] will start looking ahead and thinking now is when they get into the real meat of where they can possibly get points.

"He needed to get those three. I think they'll be buzzing and will really believe in themselves now."

Hopefully, we can step it up again and go into the break with momentum."

Having heard the audio, I think the LFC statement had a point - PGMOL were extremely quick to rush to 'significant human error', but that feels like throwing the referees under the bus. They made a mistake, but the framework and protocols they are working with are equally at fault for not foreseeing and mitigating the possibility of human error. PGMOL shouldn't have commented on a cause without an independent review, and that review may well conclude that it was a systematic failure of how VARs are trained to communicate. Feels like PGMOL are deflecting onto the refs instead of taking a long hard look at the systems they implement.

Man United progressed last year but have somehow regressed this year so far. I understand they have a lot of injuries, but something is just off about the whole club. Too many off-field stories and drama. Ten Hag doesn't seem to have control. Worrying times for Man United.

Defeat disappointing but Luton gave everything - Edwards

Luton manager Rob Edwards reacts to defeat at home to Burnley: "I'm obviously really disappointed with the result, we're down, flat and hurting because of the manner of it.

"We pushed, we had set-pieces, we went forward in numbers and were brave, aggressive and didn't allow them the control they wanted.

"But we come away with nothing and that hurts.

"The lads gave everything. The fans were clapping at the end and if they're doing that then we're doing the right things, but everybody will be disappointed because we should have taken something from the game."

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "It feels great, three points in the Premier League. We had to battle for it and I am proud of the team for what they showed today.

"We showed what got us through in the Championship last season. Too much is said about what we do on the ball. If you really want to judge us watch us off the ball, in the battles. Last year, we had lots of games like this and again - like at Newcastle and Man Utd - this is a team that enjoys this type of work. We loved everything about it today."

  18. Burnley secure dramatic late win at Luton Townpublished at 11:52 BST 4 October 2023

    Luton 1-2 Burnley

Burnley gained a dramatic win at Luton Town for their first Premier League victory of the season.

Jacob Bruun Larsen cut in from the right and unleashed a stunning shot into the far top corner in the 85th minute for what proved to be the winner.

That came only 65 seconds after Luton had equalised, substitute Elijah Adebayo finishing after Reece Burke had headed on Tahith Chong's cross.

Burnley had only gained one point from a tough opening six games of the season and went ahead at Kenilworth Road when Lyle Foster produced a composed finish after fine work from Sander Berge in first-half stoppage time.

Yes, MUFC have progressed under Ten Hag. Last season we saw it. He was pragmatic and did what he needed to do to win games with a less than perfect squad. This season I think he thought: “Right, now we do it my way." But with personnel still not optimum and a growing injury list and not enough depth we are paying the price. January cannot come soon enough
