  1. 'Trust in VAR is going to be the big issue'published at 09:38 BST 4 October 2023

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Breakfast

The big thing they are going to have now is the trust issue.

There were people anyway who weren't believing in it. You can imagine what it is going to be like now, going forward.

I know what [referees' chief] Howard [Webb] is trying to do. Communication has definitely improved under Howard.

I know Howard, I know how hard he is working to try and make everything work, but this is certainly three or four steps backwards and, as I said, trust going forward is going to be a big issue and they are going to have to work hard at that.

  2. VAR 'has to improve going forward'published at 09:32 BST 4 October 2023

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Breakfast

You have got two professional people in the VAR room - the VAR and the VAR's assistant. How on earth can the both of them get such a decision like that wrong?

There has to be more communication [in the stadium]. It happens in rugby, where there is one voice in the stadium talking to the VAR official.

There is no game without the fans. Fans mean everything, fans make football. They need to hear, in the stadium, what is going on. That is one thing that has to improve.

I think more football people should be in that room, helping them make decisions, who have played the game of football. Not necessarily at the highest level, but certainly the game of football. That would help as well.

There are so many things. We need better understanding. It [VAR] is not going away, it is here to stay. We have to get on with it and put up with it, but it has to improve going forward.

  3. VAR audio 'is chaotic...you have got so many voices going on'published at 09:27 BST 4 October 2023

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Breakfast

Use whatever word you want - chaotic, shambolic. A mess would be the appropriate one.

I listened to that last night [VAR audio] like everyone else. It is chaotic - you have got so many voices going on.

Can you imagine being the referee? It's hard enough in that pressurised situation anyway, when you have got to make a crucial decision, but if you have got four or five voices in your ear pinging away to you...

  7. ‘United's woeful season lurches from one damaging loss to another‘published at 09:04 BST 4 October 2023

    Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

Manchester United's woeful season lurches from one damaging loss to another as Galatasaray took advantage of some calamitous defending to record a comeback Champions League win at Old Trafford.

Ten-man United led twice through young striker Rasmus Hojlund, the second a brilliant effort as the 20-year-old took advantage of Davinson Sanchez's slip to race 50 yards and beat Fernando Muslera with a deft finish.

But the hosts could only hold their advantage for a combined 10 minutes, as first old-boy Wilfried Zaha, then Kerem Akturkoglu levelled.

Then, after Mauro Icardi had failed to convert the penalty that followed a terrible Andre Onana mistake that led to Casemiro's red card, the Argentine made amends when he sped clear of the hosts' defence nine minutes from time and found the finish.

It is the first time United have started a Champions League group-stage campaign with successive defeats, and piles the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag, whose side are bottom of the table, four points behind their visitors who are second, behind Bayern Munich.

United have now lost two on the trot following Saturday's Premier League defeat by Crystal Palace, five of their past seven games and six out of 10 in all competitions since the start of the season.

You have a look at Manchester United and they have core players, Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Victor Lindelof. You expect them to have really good games and they are not.

They had plenty of chances to win that game, there was a period in that game they could have put it to bed - they are not killing it off.

The classic example is when Rashford passed when he should have had a shot.

I don't believe the players believe in each other.

When he reflected on his unfulfilled United career on the eve of the game, Zaha said he had emerged stronger for it.

There are some who argue he had the talent to operate at a higher level than Crystal Palace, and even now could be doing better for himself than the Turkish Super Lig.

Zaha's complaint about water not being immediately to hand when he approached the dugout during a break in play suggests the same attention to detail does not exist in Turkey as the Premier League.

Nevertheless, Galatasaray provide Zaha with the Champions League platform he craved, and almost a decade after making his United debut on this ground, he scored his first goal in the competition.

There was not much finesse about it. A long ball launched out of the visitors' half, which created the tussle on the edge of the area that Zaha was simply too strong for Diogo Dalot in.

His volley bounced into the ground, but was enough to send the ball looping over Onana. Unlike in September 2020, when he scored twice in a Palace win at Old Trafford but no fans were present to see it, this time Zaha was able to milk the celebrations, although they were nothing compared with those that followed the final whistle.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports: "The mental errors we make, you cannot allow them at this level. You get punished. This is difficult to control. We are all in this together. We were twice up and in control of the game. We expect more together."

On Rasmus Hojlund's two goals: "Rasmus scored two great goals. We're happy with that but of course but we didn't win the game. He can be really happy with his goals."

On Marcus Rashford trying to square it to Bruno Fernandes instead of shooting: "That's up to Marcus. In such a moment he has to make a decision."

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was not holding back on TNT Sports. He says United have no organisation defensively.

"We go to sleep. We're being cut open like a knife through butter," he adds.

Paul Scholes, his former United team-mate, says: "Disappointed. I don't think Manchester United played that badly, but all the talk before the game was a lack of goals in the team. We disregarded the defensive side of the game. It is not good enough they were all over the place."

Former Everton and England midfielder Izzy Christiansen on BBC Radio 5 Live says: "Manchester United are like a wounded animal at the minute, the performance had elements of quality, but not enough control."

  12. Terrible night for Ten Hagpublished at 08:35 BST 4 October 2023

    Man Utd 2-3 Galatasaray

This was a truly awful night for Ten Hag, who stood in the pouring rain before the final whistle hoping his side could snatch something to give them hope in a campaign that has been as bleak as the weather.

"Our start to the season has not been good enough," he said in his programme notes. "Although there are reasons, we will not attempt to hide behind excuses. It is up to us now to turn our fortunes around. What happens next is up to us and nobody else."

The early signs are not good, though Hojlund at least provides something positive to reflect on for United.

Marcus Rashford created the Dane's first with a lofted cross into the six-yard box, where Hojlund beat Sanchez to thump home a header.

Then, after Rashford had sprinted clear only to mess up a routine square pass that should have presented Bruno Fernandes with a tap-in, Hojlund embarked on his own run from halfway, this time with considerably more success to take his Champions League tally to three in two games.

Defensively though, United were shocking from that point on.

Casemiro failed to track Akturkoglu's run into the box after Sofyan Amrabat had been turned too easily by the touchline, and the Turkey forward levelled for a second time.

Onana's £47m price tag came with the assurance he is good with his feet. But when the Cameroon keeper sent a pass from the edge of his six-yard box straight to Dries Mertens, his goal only survived because Casemiro fouled the Belgian and Icardi missed the penalty.

There was no reprieve when Icardi won it four minutes later, and the jubilant celebrations of visiting fans scattered all over Old Trafford only made a bad night worse for United.

The problem with the VAR audio is that there was no direct communication between the ref and VAR on what the on-field decision was. This is a protocol issue, not a VAR issue. The mistake from Darren England is one everyone has made in their life, you lose concentration for a moment and do something on autopilot. All that needs to change is a protocol so VAR says "Goal allowed onside, check complete" rather than just "Check complete". This means if the VAR has misinterpreted the on-field decision it gives the ref that extra protection to correct the issue. It's not the first goal to be awarded/disallowed incorrectly, move on!!

    Alex, Edinburgh

In cricket, for every review, the third umpire goes through a standard process. For an LBW - front foot check, snicko for involvement of bat, pitching outside leg, impact in line, wickets hitting. There is absolutely no room for mistake. And even with all this, the umpire’s call or close decisions become controversial. VAR in the Tottenham v Liverpool match was just shambolic! Zero defined process. The VAR referee didn’t even know what the original on-field decision was. He remembered or was reminded that the on-field decision was the opposite of his assumption AFTER he made the decision. Schoolboy errors in the whole VAR process. Need to learn. And fast.

  17. 'PGMOL will hope audio puts conspiracies to bed'published at 08:09 BST 4 October 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

It is a major error, but as PGMOL said right at the start of the process it is a major human error.

There have been all sorts of conspiracies that have come out and PGMOL will hope this audio puts some of those to bed.

The interesting thing is when they say 'delay, delay, delay' after the game has restarted.

Could they have stopped the match when the ball was out for a throw in? Could they have said 'we have got this wrong, we need to go back and give the goal'?

    Under the laws, no.

Once they had worked that out they realised they made a catastrophic mistake.

Listen to the audio of the incorrect VAR decision on Liverpool's offside goal v Tottenham

To recap, the audio recordings of discussions between the match officials around Luis Diaz's disallowed goal against Tottenham have been made public - click on the video above to listen.

Liverpool asked referees' body PGMOL for the audio after the controversy in the first half of their 2-1 defeat.

Video assistant referee Darren England did not overrule when Liverpool's Diaz was wrongly flagged offside.

In the audio, England says the check is "perfect" before swearing when he realises a mistake has been made.

After releasing the audio on Tuesday, PGMOL said the error was a result of a "lapse of concentration and loss of focus".

The Premier League added that the incident in Saturday's game, and the subsequent review of what led to the incorrect decision, highlighted "systemic weaknesses in the VAR process".

That recording is farcical. Poor beyond belief. You could stop the game whenever and say made a mistake sorry onside. Poor!! Both officials should step down completely! Also when it comes to last night..... BRING BACK DE GEA! The players don't know what they are doing! No confidence. Stop off field nonsense and concentrate on the players on the field. Feel very bad for Sancho. As right now he could very much be what United need!
