Oh, this is a big chance!

James Ward-Prowse's corner finds Oriol Romeu in acres of space. He rises, meets it with his head but sends his effort wide.

Has to hit the target. A huge let-off for Burnley.

    Burnley 0-0 Southampton

James Ward-Prowse in the thick of it again.

This time it is to swing over a good free-kick that Burnley do well to get a head to first before completing the clearance by a big nod away from James Tarkowski.

Soon after Kyle Walker-Peters cuts inside and fires a shot that deflects over for a Saints corner.

James Ward-Prowse looks to curl a cross into the home box but he can't beat the first man, who heads away. Burnley will know not to allow the Saints midfielder any kind of room near the box. Not with that wand of a right foot.

Well, it might not be a sell-out, but the home fans are still getting behind their side early on here. The chants are constant.

The home side getting stuck in but Oriol Romeu is a strong lad in the middle of the pitch. He holds off the challenges and keeps Saints in possession via a deflection for a throw.

Here come the players. Time to get our game heads on.

By the way, the Clarets' last Premier League home match under a manager other than Sean Dyche was with Brian Laws.

It was a 4-2 home victory against Spurs on 9 May 2010.

  11. 'I hope fans see they have a group fighting for them'published at 19:40 BST 21 April 2022

    Burnley v Southampton (19:45 BST)

Interim boss Mike Jackson says Burnley's remaining home games are going to be vital in the club's fight for Premier League survival.

Four of the Clarets' remaining seven games are at Turf Moor, starting with Southampton on Thursday and Wolves on Sunday.

On those upcoming games, Jackson said: "Two home games are good if we can keep the mentality and with what can happen in that stadium.

"I’ve played here under the lights as a player and I know what it’s like and I know the impact that crowd can have.

"Look at the Everton game. The atmosphere that can be created can be really powerful.

"You only have to look how they came down on Sunday. I know what it is like to play at Turf Moor and the impact they can have.

"They know where the club is. I hope they see they have a group fighting for them."

Jackson still has faith Burnley can avoid the drop. He said: "I believe it, you have got to. This is possible. I think there is enough in this group.

"I’ve seen what it means to that group. They were really disappointed that they didn’t come away from there [West Ham] with more.

"This group is an experienced group - they know what they need to do. They’re fighting and they’re ready."

Never feels right playing a Premier League game on a Thursday.

Turf Moor has that murmur of pre-game nerves and excitement swirling around it, though. Everyone in here will be up for it, regardless of the day.

Well, it’s been a very strange week: the Sean Dyche sacking out of nowhere, Ben Mee managing the side and the rumour mill in full flow.

Heading down to the game on Sunday felt strange. The atmosphere in the away end matched that feeling.

It started as you’d expect - with West Ham dominating - but because of the unfortunate injury to Ashley Westwood, the game turned on its head.

We started to take control – while playing some great football – and ended up taking the lead through a great ball into the box.

Maxwel Cornet sadly missed a penalty to take a 2-0 lead. You have to think if Burnley had gone in at the break two goals in front, we would have seen the game out. Another match in which Cornet has cost us points.

Nick Pope was the standout performer, once again showing why he should be England’s number one.

It's a huge game on Thursday against Southampton.

  15. Breaking the Bednarek 'curse'published at 19:34 BST 21 April 2022

Jan Bednarek's first goal of the season against Leicester caused light-hearted concern among the Southampton fanbase, with the Saints never previously winning when he found the back of the net.

As small as the sample size may be - with the Poland centre-back having only scored three goals in four seasons up until that point - the similarity in which the games panned out were borderline infuriating, yet humorous in equal measure.

When he scored against Chelsea, Wolves and Manchester United, the Saints surrendered a two-goal lead in each game, going on to lose 3-2 at home.

Admittedly, the pattern of scoring was slightly different against Brendan Rodgers' side, with Southampton only ever holding a one-goal advantage on their way to a 2-2 draw. Yet another loss of the same scoreline was dangerously close.

After breaking the Bednarek ‘curse’, his following three goals have all come in victories. Scoring first in an emphatic win over Brentford - as well as deciders against West Ham and Arsenal - his antics in the opposition box have proven to be pivotal.

Only outscored by Armando Broja, James Ward-Prowse, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams, the defender has not only bettered Jannik Vestergaard’s goalscoring total from last term, but has also helped Saints earn five extra points.

At 26 years old, there are still questions surrounding his ability to perform at a consistent level defensively, but no longer around his threat from an attacking set-piece.

  16. 'It is always tough at Turf Moor'published at 19:30 BST 21 April 2022

    Burnley v Southampton (19:45 BST)

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to Sky Sports: "The win over Arsenal was good for getting confidence back. We had a tough run with a few defeats and a home win over a good side helps, for sure.

"It is very tight in the middle of the table. With a few wins you can achieve a lot. We have four teams around us - we have Brighton, Brentford, Leicester and Palace. Today an extra game against Burnley and an important one.

"When a team changes manager you don't have so many games you can look at. But you saw against West Ham they are still a well-organised team. You know it is always tough to come to Turf Moor. The atmosphere is intense and you have to be resilient.

"The most important thing against Arsenal was to have a clean sheet and defend well. It is now about taking the points and the wins you need. We have had here some interesting, tough games. To the end it has been a tight game."

  18. 'Bring the fans with you'published at 19:25 BST 21 April 2022

    Burnley v Southampton (19:45 BST)

    Burnley

Burnley caretaker manager Mike Jackson, speaking to Sky Sports: "We spoke today a bout this being an opportunity. You can't see these games as burdens now. These guys face challenges all the time. They have throughout their careers. This is the next one.

"Before the West Ham game, in the changing room, the atmosphere, and then the signs during the game, it was all really positive. There was questions asked of the group and they showed character. You don't lose character. They have that in spades. We are looking for that again. The work-rate, the competitive character, but most of all was the togetherness - that is massive going forward.

"Most important for me with Ash [Westwood] is that he is well. He had his operation today and that went really well. Nobody wants to see that to a player. If anything it has brought the players together. I text him this morning and he sent one back and said he was well and on the road back.

"The league doesn't end today. What we have to do is be competitive. If we get the performance and look after our own stuff that hopefully leads to a positive result. The players have been fantastic so far. The fans here have a group of players that are fighting for them. I have just said to the players, 'bring the fans with you'."

  19. Postpublished at 19:24 BST 21 April 2022

Well, it is a beautiful evening in Burnley. The sun is just setting on Turf Moor. It's all a bit calm right now as the players warm up, but it's going to get lively in around 20 minutes time.

Mike Jackson was out there with his players as they went through their pre-game exercise. Here is what the Clarets boss had to say earlier...

  20. Hasenhuttl confident Saints can find 'good solution' over Forsterpublished at 19:22 BST 21 April 2022

    Burnley v Southampton (19:45 BST)

Ralph Hasenhuttl is confident Southampton can come to an agreement with Fraser Forster in contract negotiations.

The goalkeeper's deal runs out in the summer, but after being named man of the match in back-to-back games, plenty of Saints fans are keen to keep hold of the 34-year-old.

When asked if his recent form has influenced any decisions over his future, Hasenhuttl said: "Absolutely, there are a lot of arguments for doing this and I am sure that we find with him a very good solution for the future.

"I was very happy how he reacted when he got the chance to play and absolutely, he has a very good argument with all of his effort."

Elsewhere on the pitch, despite Southampton being all but safe, Hasenhuttl said he wouldn't hand minutes to youngsters for sentiment's sake.

He said: "It is visible that we are now saying we are safe, we try to focus on higher targets.

"In this middle part of the table, there is the chance to climb positions. There is no time for looking for who can get a chance, but it is clear the best XI should play and they get the chance to play".
