    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

    Laura Bassett
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a really well worked goal. The pressure this Wolfsburg team have put the Arsenal defence under with cross after cross.

And the amount of bodies in the box, they suffocate you in there.

GOAL - Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburgpublished at 18 mins

    Tabea Wassmuth

    That's a major blow.

Clinical from Wolfsburg as Tabea Wassmuth beats her marker in the air to direct a cross beyond Manuela Zinsberger.

Jonas Eidevall will not be pleased with the marking.

Beth Mead is shaking her head. A free-kick is floated into the Wolfsburg box and the keeper only half punches it clear into Mead's path. She takes a swing but it's wild.

Cagey start since that early chance for Arsenal. Wolfsburg are soaking up pressure from the home side and it's all gone a little bit scrappy.

  7. 'They haven't experienced this for five years'published at 20:07 GMT 23 March 2022

    Arsenal 0-0 Wolfsburg

    Kelly Smith
Former England and Arsenal striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's going to be a difficult game for Arsenal tonight. They have been out of the Champions League for five years and they have waited for this occasion for some time.

When I played, it used to be an annual event but they haven’t experienced it for a few years. They need to take confidence from their recent performances and be mindful of who they are playing.

But they are unbeaten in their last 10 games so it should be a good one.

  8. 'Great run'published at 20:07 GMT 23 March 2022

    Arsenal 0-0 Wolfsburg

    Laura Bassett
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Arsenal nicked the ball and they were off. It was a great run from outside to in from Beth Mead and that will give them confidence with a shot in the opening minutes.

    Arsenal 0-0 Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg win the first corner of the tie and it's played short before being cleared. Then a warning for Arsenal as slack defending allows the Germans to have their attempt but the header is wide.

Here we go. Arsenal are the last remaining British side in this season’s Women’s Champions League so can they take a big step towards their first appearance in the semi-finals since 2013?

This Wolfsburg team will not be an easy team to overcome though.

That's what you call a fast start. Beth Mead is played in and drills it narrowly wide after good work by Stina Blackstenius. The crowd liked that.

Wolfsburg reached a 10th consecutive quarter-final by thrashing Chelsea 4-0 in December.

"We played Chelsea and we saw how high the level was," said Wolfsburg boss Tommy Stroot. "It's all about individual quality in pretty much every position and they got some new players in the winter break. We have to be very careful.

"These are the moments why we do all this - great teams, great atmosphere."

There will be plenty of familiar faces among the opposition for both sides.

Wolfsburg's Dutch midfielder Jill Roord spoke this week of not having a chance to say goodbye to the Arsenal fans because of the Covid-19 pandemic after leaving last summer following a two-year spell in north London.

Her fellow Netherlands international, defender Dominique Janssen, had four hugely successful years with Arsenal between 2015 and 2019, winning the Super League, FA Cup and League Cup twice, and will be desperate to stop international team-mate Vivianne Miedema for the Gunners.

Gunners right-back Noelle Maritz will also be up against former colleagues after a seven-year spell with Wolfsburg that included winning the Champions League, five Frauen Bundesliga titles and six German Cups.

It will be a first European match in Arsenal colours for striker Stina Blackstenius, who has impressed with four goals in six Super League games since joining on a free transfer in January.

Wolfsburg and Germany captain Alexandra Popp will be playing her first Champions League game of the season after 10 months out of action because of a serious injury to her right knee, which needed two lots of surgery.

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall is expecting his side to face a new challenge.

The treble-chasing Women's Super League leaders are aiming to reach the semi-finals for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

"They play differently to the way the teams we usually play do," he said.

"It is great we are in this position in the three different competitions we are in.

"We are in these positions because we want to push for trophies. We are happy with the opportunities we have but nothing has been achieved yet. Now it is up to us to do it.

"They are very good on the counter-attack and we haven't played a team this season as good on counter-attacks.

"But our style of football, I don't think Wolfsburg have been exposed to that either. So that excites me."

For only the fifth time Arsenal Women will be tonight playing a competitive match at Emirates Stadium as the club swap the intimate surroundings of Meadow Park in Borehamwood for the far grander Emirates.

Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall believes playing more often at the home of the men's team is a big step forward for the women's game. "I like playing at the Emirates, it's the right way forward for us and it's the way we can grow the game - it's going to be an exciting occasion," he said.

A crowd of 12,232 watched the 4-0 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League group stage in December, while 8,705 were present at a thrilling WSL season opener in August as Arsenal beat title holders Chelsea 3-2. That followed previous WSL games at the Emirates against Liverpool in May 2013 and Chelsea in April 2012.

The attendance has been capped at 10,000 tonight, but Arsenal will be at the Emirates again (Covid-19 permitting) on Saturday as they are scheduled to entertain Tottenham in another WSL match. They will then play the second leg of this tie at Wolfsburg's Volkswagen Arena with a capacity of 30,000, instead of their regular AOK Stadion, which only holds 5,200.

But Arsenal and the rest still have a long way to go to catch up to European champions Barcelona as they will play their quarter-final second leg El Clasico tie against Real Madrid in front of a huge crowd with more than 70,000 tickets sold - a world record for a women's club game.

The Champions League final in May will also be held at a great arena, the Allianz Stadium, home of Juventus.
