Wolfsburg pin you back and counter press really well and they suffocate you. The goal was a huge wake up call for Arsenal but they have grown into the game.

Maybe they can speed up the play a little bit. They certainly have had the openings so they should take lots of confidence into the second half.

Arsenal go in at the break a goal down, but will be encouraged by their reaction after falling behind to Tabea Wassmuth's header when she lost her marker Beth Mead.

Mead shot wide early on and had another effort saved by Almuth Schult, who also did well to keep out Katie McCabe's header, which nearly crept in the far post.

But the Gunners will be looking to see more from both Vivianne Miedema and Stina Blackstenius in the second half as both have been well marshalled by an organised and disciplined Wolfsburg defence.

It's about concentration when you lose the ball and getting into shape quickly. Wolfsburg hit you so quick on the counter but Arsenal are still in this game.

They are knocking on the door. There is still a lot to play for in the second half.

Wolfsburg are really showing their experience on the Champions League stage but Arsenal have had their moments. Jonas Eidevall will want to see his side move it around quicker in the second half. There's a long way to go and you feel there will be a few twists and turns before the winner of this two-legged tie is revealed.

  8. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

It's an excellent delivery from the free-kick by Steph Catley but Almuth Schult does really well to hold the ball while under pressure from Lotte Wubben-Moy inside the six-yard area.

  9. YELLOW CARDpublished at 43 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

Beth Mead lets out a yell as she is clattered by Felicitas Rauch out wide deep inside Wolfsburg's half. It's a yellow card to Rauch and a free-kick to Arsenal.

  10. 'Thriving'published at 20:40 GMT 23 March 2022

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

    Kelly Smith
Former England and Arsenal striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Vivianne Miedema is finding herself a lot closer to Stina Blackstenius. She is trying to find those pockets of space where she can turn and run at players, or play on the shoulder and get onto through balls.

I think she is enjoying playing as a 10 because sometimes as a forward you are playing with your back to goal, whereas she can drive into space. I think she is thriving there right now.

  11. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg are so good on the counter. They've spent several minutes under pressure but after soaking up everything Arsenal have thrown at them, they're on the charge.

  12. Better from the Gunnerspublished at 20:38 GMT 23 March 2022

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Emirates Stadium

Beth Mead could have scored inside the opening two minutes but dragged an effort wide and she has looked Arsenal's biggest threat.

She has just now done well to cut inside a defender and get a shot away, but Wolfsburg goalkeeper Almuth Schult was well positioned to save the strike.

But it did lift the noise levels at Emirates Stadium and Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall liked what he saw from his technical area, giving the effort a deserved round of applause. Arsenal need a lot more of that kind of creativity from Mead and her team-mates though.

  13. Postpublished at 34 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

Arsenal are having their best spell of the game. Will they make it count?

  14. Postpublished at 32 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

That attempt by McCabe has lifted the crowd. There's more applause from the stands as Beth Mead does really well to beat her marker and create space to test the keeper from an angle.

That's more like the Arsenal we know.

  15. CLOSE!published at 30 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

    Much better by the Gunners.

Steph Catley delivers a deep cross to the back post for Katie McCabe, who does really well to send a header back across goal.

Almuth Schult scrambles across her line and claws the it away at the last moment.

  16. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

Arsenal have had more possession - 58-42 - and more shots - 5-4 - than Wolfsburg but it's the Germans who have had the only two attempts on target. And they've made one of those count.

  17. Postpublished at 26 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

    Big chance.

Wolfsburg look dangerous each time they go forward.

Alexandra Popp meets a great cross by Svenja Huth but it falls just wide.

Arsenal need to get it together at the back. They don't look solid.

  18. What are Arsenal made of?published at 20:25 GMT 23 March 2022

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Emirates Stadium

It had been a bright start from Arsenal, but Wolfsburg are the ones who take the lead.

Tabea Wassmuth had a shot well saved by Manuela Zinsberger in the visitors' first effort on target but Gunners' boss Jonas Eidevall will be disappointed with his side's attempts to clear the ball with Lottie Wubben-Moy slicing a clearance when she should have got it to safety.

Wolfsburg managed to keep it alive and Wassmuth had got free of her marker Beth Mead, who had been Arsenal's best player, to head the German side ahead from six yards out with her ninth goal of this season's competition. Now this will be a test to see what Arsenal are really made of.

  19. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Arsenal 0-1 Wolfsburg

Katie McCabe tries to get Arsenal back into this with an ambitious attempt from outside the box. It's not a bad effort but it flies wide. It's very quiet inside the Emirates. The hosts need to give their fans something to shout about.

  20. Postpublished at 20 mins

Tabea Wassmuth cannot stop scoring in the Champions League. That's was her ninth in this season's competition. Impressive.
