1. 'Records are there to be broken'published at 19:47 GMT 19 February 2019

    Lyon v Barcelona (20:00 GMT)

Ernesto Valverde says Barcelona can end their recent low-scoring run.

They have only (by their standards) scored four goals in their last four games, three draws and a 1-0 win.

"Everyone has their own opinion. Perhaps we have not created many chances in some games, but we are clearly an attacking team," he said.

"I do not have a lot to say, we will see on Tuesday."

Barca's last away win in the knockout stages were in 2016 against Arsenal and Valverde said: "Records are there to be broken.

"It was also said that we did not score away from home and this year we have done so in big games against Tottenham and Inter."

  2. 'We can cope without Van Dijk'published at 19:46 GMT 19 February 2019

Liverpool v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson thinks they can cope without the suspended Virgil van Dijk - and believes he is capable of playing at centre-back if needed.

"Of course, he is a massive miss. I think you can see how important he is for us as a team.

"But at the same time I feel as though we have enough quality in the team to be able to cope with it."

Would he be willing to play in central defence? "Yes. Obviously I would give it everything, and I would be ready. Whether it's centre-half, right-back, anywhere on the pitch - wherever I'm asked to play, I'll always be ready to play football and give everything for the team."

Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri is looking forward to facing his former club (if he gets off the bench).

The summer signing from Stoke won two Bundesliga titles and one Champions League (as an unused sub in the final) during his time at Bayern.

"I was very happy because I wanted to play against Bayern Munich, against my old team-mates and my old team," Shaqiri said.

"It was an amazing time [at Bayern]. We won a lot of titles, we won the Champions League. We had the best team Bayern Munich had.

"It was an amazing feeling to win so many trophies. I had many great memories there, I will never forget them.

"I'm really looking forward to going there and trying to win the game in Munich with my team."

  4. 'Players need to match fans' passion'published at 19:44 GMT 19 February 2019

Liverpool v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Ex-Liverpool player Jim Beglin on BBC Radio 5 live: "By now Jurgen Klopp can let the fans get on with the job. We saw last season against Manchester City and Roma, it was superb - as good as anything we've seen over the years. The players need to reciprocate and match that passion."

The Liverpool squad spent last week in the sunshine in Marbella - certainly no need for scarves, hats or big coats there - and I am sure it was a fair bit warmer in Spain than it is out on the Anfield pitch right now.

They spent the the week training, obviously, rather than working on their winter tans - and you would hope that involved a lot of work on defending set-pieces.

The Reds are up against a Bayern side who are the top-scoring side from set-pieces in this season’s Champions League with eight goals - including five from corners, also a competition high.

  8. How Bayern Munich's season is goingpublished at 19:39 GMT 19 February 2019

Liverpool v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Bayern Munich, seeking their seventh Bundesliga title in a row, are three points off Borussia Dortmund.

That sounds less than ideal but they were much further behind before a run of nine wins in their past 10 league games.

They cruised through their Champions League group, finishing unbeaten with four wins and two draws.

And they are still in treble contention, facing second tier Heidenheim in the German Cup quarter-final.

Liverpool v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool are only behind Premier League leaders Manchester City on goal difference - and the Reds have a game in hand.

The Anfield side are actually enjoying one of the greatest Premier League seasons to date - with 20 wins and only one defeat from 26 games.

They snuck* through in the Champions League, finishing above Napoli on goals scored, despite losing all their three away games.

Jurgen Klopp's side have already been knockout out of both domestic cups.

*A red squiggly line is telling me snuck is not a word. But I'm sticking with it

Roberto Firmino is a very unselfish player. He's very clever and, yes, we've seen him score goals so many times. But the positions he puts himself into, he knows where the other players are and he'll do a little backheel or flick round the corner.

He goes into other positions and leaves his centre-forward position for other players to go in to. He's vital to Liverpool and I think that's where the game will be won - with very clever attacking football in the final third.

If I was a Liverpool player, I'd rather win the Premier League all day long.

But the game's changed, players' mindsets have changed. Back when I was playing, I think they'd all say the league rather than Champions League.

Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac is managing in the Champions League for the first time this season.

The former Croatia and Eintracht Frankfurt manager took charge of Bayern last summer.

And he thinks his side have got the toughest last-16 draw.

"We are playing tomorrow against an opponent where it is the most difficult draw.

"If you look at what Liverpool did in the Champions League last season, and what they are doing in the Premier League this season, then you have to say it is the most difficult draw that there is.

"The atmosphere will definitely be good, but I'm sure my players have gone through a lot of big games with great atmospheres, so that's not an argument that we shouldn't be able to compete."

  14. Klopp 'was not angry' at not getting Bayern jobpublished at 19:28 GMT 19 February 2019

Liverpool v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he almost became Bayern Munich manager in 2008.

Bayern instead appointed Jurgen Klinsmann, with Klopp going to Borussia Dortmund later that year.

"I was not angry. I never expected that they would go for me. I was a second division manager [at Mainz] in Germany, and who would expect that Bayern calls you?

"It was more of a shock in the first moment. Then a couple of days later they called and said they went for the other Jurgen."

Klopp denies there is a personal edge to this game because of Dortmund's rivalry with Bayern.

"Making kind of these personal battles out of it I don't understand. It is two big clubs facing each other and I am really happy to be part of this game."

  15. 'Firmino wasn't well yesterday'published at 19:26 GMT 19 February 2019

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to BT Sport: “Firmino, yesterday he was not well but today he is. All the results in the Champions League are important. The further you go the stronger your opponent gets. [Suspended Jerome] Boateng is not here for Bayern but it will be a tough game.”

    Robert LewandowskiImage source, BBC Sport

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has been talking to Guillem Balague for BBC Sport about tonight's game.

"I have never been to Anfield," he said. "It will be my first time. I’ve heard a lot and I can imagine a stadium like Anfield with all the fans. They will be against me but I love this feeling.

"It will a very tough game. Liverpool are near the top of the Premier League and playing very well but it’s the Champions League, something special.

"We know we have very good players. You have to be ready. You have to play at 100% for the 90 minutes."

  17. 'It will take more effort than usual'published at 19:24 GMT 19 February 2019

    Lyon v Barcelona (20:00 GMT)

Lyon boss Bruno Genesio: "We have to be measured. We can compete but we aren't favourites. It will take more effort than usual.

"It's important to believe and trust in yourself. I'm calm and serene. The danger is to play the match before starting it."

On the absence of suspended captain Nabil Fekir...

"He is our technical leader, and it's always difficult playing without him. He likes being decisive. We'll need to overcome his absence."

Liverpool v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis at Gracenote, says: "Liverpool are ranked eighth in Europe by our Euro Club Index, five places lower than Bayern Munich in third.

"The gap is similar to Manchester United and Paris St-Germain last week. Liverpool have a 35% chance of progress according to the 'ECI', just as Manchester United did pre-match last week."
