    Japan 0-0 Poland

A team who only need a draw to go through against a team who have nothing to play for. I was a fool for expecting a good game, wasn't I?

    Japan 0-0 Poland

Japan have a free-kick, they send a lot of men forward but then just loft the ball into the keeper's hands. Poor.

You look at Robert Lewandowski and think "get some help up there with him, supply him with some ammunition". We know he scores for fun.

Poland defender Kamil Glik, who almost missed the World Cup after injuring his shoulder while trying a bicycle kick in training, has a header which is saved... but it wouldn't have counted anyway as he was trying to pull the jersey off his marker.

  5. Reminder of how it stands...published at 15:21 BST 28 June 2018

    Japan 0-0 Poland

Senegal have just had a big penalty appeal waved away but as it stands, Japan go through as group leaders and Senegal are through as runners-up. They have the same points, goal difference and goals scored as enegal.

But Senegal have a -5 fair play score compared to Japan's -3. To qualify, Colombia must win.

If Senegal had scored, they would have moved top.

The winners of this group play the team who finish second in England's group and vice-versa.

  6. 'Japan the better side'published at 15:19 BST 28 June 2018

    Japan 0-0 Poland

No doubt Japan are the better team, they've had a few chances. I don't remember anything from Poland, especially in terms of the final third there's nothing at all.

In the other game, Senegal were awarded a penalty - which was then overturned by VAR. Colombia defender Davinson Sanchez just got a touch of the ball before bringing down Sadio Mane.

Japan may have literally kicked themselves in the foot here. Surely it's better to rest players or change formations AFTER you qualify!

    Japan 0-0 Poland

Rafal Kurzawa squares it to Poland captain Robert Lewandowski but he just blasts the ball straight at a Japanese defender.

Now Japan break and Gotoku Sakai's shot from 20 yards out is easily held by Lukasz Fabianski.

This is better now. Japan have another chance and Yoshinori Muto doesn't hesitate this time from just outside the box but it's a good parried save by Lukasz Fabianski to keep Poland level.

  11. 'A waste'published at 15:14 BST 28 June 2018

Muto should play it early, in the end it was somewhat of a waste. It is a golden opportunity for a split second.

First shot of the game. The player mentioned in the last tweet, Jan Bednarek, gifts the ball to Yoshinori Muto - really shocking defending. Muto spends too much time messing round but a cross is eventually played to Shinji Okazaki, who heads wide.

Patrick Smith: so far I've been backing any side with a Southampton player, but today is Bednarek v Yoshida. Conundrum.

  14. 'Slow start for Japan'published at 15:10 BST 28 June 2018

    Japan 0-0 Poland

    Mark Lawrenson
    BBC football expert in Russia

Japan have started slowly, but I think the fact that they have made six changes means this team have likely never started together, so that takes so sorting out.

    Japan 0-0 Poland

I'm starting to fear a second goalless draw of the World Cup here.

Pretty slow start, a draw is enough for Japan and it's 36C in Volgograd so that's understandable.

    Japan 0-0 Poland

If both these games end right now, Japan will win the group because they have fewer yellow cards than Senegal, who would finish second.

    Japan 0-0 Poland

Poland dominated possession in the first couple of minutes - that one long ball aside - but Japan are starting to pass the ball around nicely.

Danger after 30 seconds. A long hoof forward to Japan's frontline but Poland keeper Lukasz Fabianski, who has joined West Ham this summer, flies off his line and parries the ball on the edge of the box. He just lets go of it before his momentum takes him out of the box.
