Bazball claiming another victim. No need to mess around with such a proper cricketer as James Rew. I hope he isn’t selected for this regime - he’s too good to enter such a dysfunctional environment. I look forward to him replacing Harry Brook in the team next year.

  2. Early wickets for Durham at New Roadpublished at 11:57 BST 8 May

    Worcestershire 40-2 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

England skipper Ben Stokes is making a rare appearance for Durham. His last game for them was, coincidentally against Worcestershire, in June 2024.

He is a figure of the player from those days though. After months working on his fitness he looks incredibly athletic and lean. A lot slimmer in the face. And he took a wicket in his second over, as a ball to Dan Lategan found the edge and was taken by the keeper Ollie Robinson, when he was on two.

Worcestershire then lost their second wicket without adding another run, as Ben Raine had Jake Libby caught at second slip by Kasey Aldridge for nine. That left them on 15-2.

Stokes' first spell lasted four overs and he took 1-14. He's now been replaced by Luke Robinson, who made his FC debut as a substitute last weekend and has started the day with a maiden.

Durham have decided to give Matty Potts a breather for this one because he's bowled 150 overs in four matches so far.

It's a nice day in Worcester. The forecast initially suggested a lot of rain but it has now changed.

    Notts 35-2 v Surrey

Joe Clarke has been a dead cert to make runs for Notts so far this season, with five scores of 90 or more in seven innings.

But it's been a tricky start for Clarke today, with a couple from Dan Worrall whizzing just past his outside edge.

Another Clark - Surrey's Jordan, who spells it with the shorter version, is on as first change for Gus Atkinson and has just been clinically dispatched to the cover boundary by Ben Duckett.

    Gubbins c Critchley b Snater 8 (Essex v Hants 33-3)

Nick Gubbins now gone and Essex have a third wicket.

He pushes forward very hard at a full-length ball from Shane Snater, round the wicket, and nicks low to fourth slip.

Matt Critchley dives forward and takes a very sharp catch.

When will Yorkshire do the right thing and get a number 11 called Dover so 9, 10 and 11 are White, Cliff and Dover.

We can only hope the search is already in progress!

  6. 50 runs

    50published at 11:51 BST 8 May

    Somerset 55-1 v Glamorgan

After a stuttering start and losing James Rew, Josh Thomas and Tom Lammonby have responded well at Sophia Gardens, and they bring up their 50 partnership with 12 overs on the board.

Zain ul Hassan comes in for Glamorgan to try and disrupt the visitors' progress.

    Worcs 39-2 v Durham

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport cricket correspondent at New Road

Four overs for Ben Stokes in his first spell - the England captain has been replaced by Luke Robinson. Perhaps that's an indication of how Stokes will be used across the match, maybe a maximum of three spells per day or four or five overs each.

    Worcs 39-2 v Durham

Ben Stokes' first spell of the County Championship season ends after four overs, with figures of 1-14 and a maiden.

Luke Robinson comes into the attack for Durham at New Road.

  9. wicket

    Mousley c Brook b White 9 (Warwickshire 34-3 v Yorkshire)

    Harry Brook takes the catch!

Dan Mousley tries an expansive drive through the covers but it's mistimed and pops up softly to give Brook one of the easiest slip catches he'll ever take.

Two this morning for Jack White and three for Yorkshire who are well on top.

  10. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:42 BST 8 May

    Slater c&b Worrall 9 (Notts 18-2 v Surrey)

The champions are in a spot of bother now as Dan Worrall strikes again...

Ben Slater drives back down the pitch at Worrall, who gets down quickly and makes the grab with both hands.

Both Notts openers gone now as Joe Clarke comes out to join Ben Duckett.

    Lancs 29-1 v Middlesex

Lancashire are making progress after that early wicket, with Keaton Jennings pulling a leg-stump delivery from Toby Roland-Jones over the rope for the first six of the game.

Roland-Jones has started with a good rhythm so far, but that shot dents his bowling figures somewhat. Jennings has scored 17 of the home side's total, with Josh Bohannon on two.

    Somerset 38-1 v Glamorgan

Josh Thomas catches a Timm van der Gugten delivery sweetly back down the ground, but partner Tom Lammonby can't get out the way quick enough and takes one to the head.

No harm done, and Lammonby responds brilliantly by pulling the first ball of the next over for four.

    Somerset 34-1 v Glamorgan

Josh Thomas doing his best to steady the ship for Somerset after watching fellow opener James Rew head back to the dressing room early.

A couple of boundaries - one off Tom Norton and one off Timm van der Gugten - push the visitors on.

  14. Postpublished at 11:33 BST 8 May

    Notts 16-1 v Surrey

Ben Duckett had a difficult winter against Australian bowlers, but he's off the mark now with a leg-side single off Dan Worrall.

It's the only run Worrall has given away in his first four overs. Ben Slater, at the other end, has scored eight as Notts look to rebuild after the loss of Haseeb Hameed.

    Prest b Cook 4 (Essex v Hants 15-2)

Tom Prest works his first ball for four backward of point.

But two balls later is cleaned up!

Another full length ball from Cook that nips back, this time between bat and pad to cart over off stump.

  16. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:27 BST 8 May

Albert lbw Cook 6 (Essex v Hants 11-1)

    Sam Cook strikes for Essex.

Full of length, he gets one to nip back on Toby Albert propping forward.

He’s beaten on the inside edge and so plumb Cook doesn’t bother to turn to look at the umpire.

  17. Postpublished at 11:26 BST 8 May

    Sussex v Leics 19-0

Feels like a big week for Ollie Robinson.

He revealed that England head coach Brendon McCullum has told him he’s back on the table for a recall and has been tipped in a few quarters to lead England’s attack again.

11 wickets at 28 so far this season isn’t screaming from the cliffs to be selected. He also struggled to make any impression on a good pitch at The Oval, taking 1 for 99 in a heavy defeat.

But he’s seemingly in favour again, with England managing director Rob Key impressed by his performance against Warwickshire.

Three overs for 11 runs so far today after Sussex chose to bowl at Hove.

    Hameed c Pope b Worrall 7 (Notts 15-1 v Surrey)

Dan Worrall makes the breakthrough as Notts skipper Haseeb Hameed is caught at second slip!

Worrall has been relentless with that nagging line outside off stump and Hameed played and missed at a few - but this one finds the edge and Ollie Pope gobbles up the catch.

Three overs, three maidens and one wicket for the Surrey seamer and that brings Ben Duckett to the crease.

    Worcs 15-1 v Durham

    Stephan Shemilt
BBC Sport cricket correspondent at New Road

Ben Stokes only needs eight deliveries to make an impact. Lategan was trying to force off the back foot and got a healthy nick behind. Stokes is bowling with good pace.

  20. wicket

WICKETpublished at 11:19 BST 8 May

    Yates c Bairstow b Cliff 7 (Warwickshire 15-2 v Yorkshire)

Less than 20 minutes on the clock and both Bears openers are back in the changing rooms.

Yorkshire's decision to bowl is proving a good one as Ben Cliff takes their second wicket with Rob Yates edging behind to Jonny Bairstow.
