    Scheffler E, Fleetwood E, Fitzpatrick -1 (6)

Scottie Scheffler hasn't had his best stuff so far today and sends his drive at the seventh miles left.

Matt Fitzpatrick is also down the left-hand side, but Tommy Fleetwood successfully splits the fairway.

  3. Bogey for Rahmpublished at 15:26 BST 9 July

Jon Rahm has been battling right from the start today, making an opening bogey before three straight pars.

He's just off the green at the par-three fifth, but misjudges his chip, which catches a slope and rolls off the other side.

Another shot dropped for the two-time major winner.

  4. Postpublished at 15:22 BST 9 July

    Scheffler E, M. Fitzpatrick -1, Fleetwood E (6)

    Ouch.

Matt Fitzpatrick reckons he should be walking off with a birdie as he watches his putt travel towards the hole before it cruelly doesn't dive into the cup at the last second.

For Tommy Fleetwood, it's the same feeling, both have tap-ins for pars.

From the back of the green, Scottie Scheffler has much more work to do to save his par, but he does so in style.

He will be the happiest of the bunch walking to the seventh tee, for sure.

  5. Postpublished at 15:15 BST 9 July

    Scheffler E, M. Fitzpatrick -1, Fleetwood E (5)

Matt Fitzpatrick can't control the spin on his approach, but it manages to cling on to the far edge of the green, with Scottie Scheffler having similar spin-related problems.

His shot shoots through the short stuff and into the first cut.

Tommy Fleetwood, from prime position, can't stop it either, though and watches it fizz past the flag and onto the fairway surrounding the green.

  6. Postpublished at 15:12 BST 9 July

    Scheffler E, M. Fitzpatrick -1, Fleetwood E (5)

Heading back out to the far corner of the course, the par-four sixth is pretty much averaging that score so far today.

Scottie Scheffler's tee shot finds some rough down the left-hand side, while Matt Fitzpatrick's is in a similar position down the right.

Tommy Fleetwood splits them both with a straight drive down the fairway.

  7. Postpublished at 15:06 BST 9 July

    Pavon -3 (6)

Matthieu Pavon is the leading player among today's later starters.

Three birdies in his opening six holes give the Frenchman an excellent platform as the course firms up in this scorching weather.

  8. Postpublished at 15:04 BST 9 July

    Scheffler E, M. Fitzpatrick -1, Fleetwood E (5)

Tommy Fleetwood makes the most of his break and curls a putt to within tap-in range.

Facing a mirror image of Fleetwood's putt, Matt Fitzpatrick curves one to the same range from the other side.

Can Scottie Scheffler go one better?

Nope. He also has to settle for a tap-in par.

  9. Postpublished at 14:55 BST 9 July

    Scheffler -1, M. Fitzpatrick -1, Fleetwood E (4)

The par-three fifth is currently playing a smidge under par, and it's next up for this group.

Matt Fitzpatrick's tee shot is long but safely on the green, while Scottish Scheffler gets a soft bounce on the way down that feeds his shot towards the hole.

Tommy Fleetwood lands short of where he'd like but avoids any real danger.

A mixed bag for the trio... I'd take any of them, mind you.

  10. 'A great test'published at 14:52 BST 9 July

Bob MacIntyre has been chatting to BBC Scotland after an opening 67:

"Happy enough with that. There was a few times where I was out of position, mainly on par fives, chipped him back into position and then took advantage of a nice wedge shot.

"Obviously I didn't hold as many putts as I would have hoped for. I felt like I didn't have the pace of the greens at the start, but overall a good round.

"It's an awkward speed of wind. Sometimes you rifle one right through it and other times you're blowing it up and it'll get hit by 25 yards.

"When I was on my last hole there, I looked at the leaderboard and I said to Mike my caddie, 'scoring's not as low as I thought it was going to be with the conditions we had'.

"When you're on the fairway and you're hitting shots in, the ball will stop, but if you're out of position, the ball is running, so I think it's a great test of golf this week."

  11. Birdies for Scheffler and Fitzpatrickpublished at 14:50 BST 9 July

    Scheffler E, M. Fitzpatrick -1, Fleetwood E (4)

A sore one for Tommy Fleetwood.

His birdie attempt lips out from the edge of the green, and he has to settle for a par.

Matt Fitzpatrick avoids any such annoyance and drops a birdie putt, while Scottie Scheffler also gets a shot back, nudging him back to even par.

  12. Postpublished at 14:46 BST 9 July

    Scheffler +1, M. Fitzpatrick E, Fleetwood E (3)

Tommy Fleetwood wraps his approach around the green but it doesn't trickle back towards the hole.

Next up, Scottie Scheffler sticks it pin-high, a few feet to the right.

Matt Fitzpatrick is about 10 feet from the hole on the far side, but on the green.

    Schott +6 (7)

It's been a favourable day for scoring in East Lothian today - sunshine and low winds on the coast.

However, not everyone has found it easy out there. Germany's Freddy Schott is six over through seven holes.

    Ouch.

  14. Postpublished at 14:41 BST 9 July

    Scheffler +1, M. Fitzpatrick E, Fleetwood E (3)

The picturesque fourth next, running parallel with the coastline.

Walking off the tee, Scottish Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are heading to their balls in the middle of the fairway.

    Easy as that, eh?

  15. Postpublished at 14:33 BST 9 July

    Rahm +1 (1)

Jon Rahm's second shot on his first hole leaves him in a horrible spot down the right and he's only able to advance it 30 yards from some thick rough.

The Spaniard needs to get up-and-down to save his par, but doesn't manage it and he's in the red early.

  16. Fleetwood bounces backpublished at 14:33 BST 9 July

    Scheffler +1, M. Fitzpatrick E, Fleetwood E (3)

All three have a decent look at birdie on the par-three third, Tommy Fleetwood is just off the green, but it's pretty flat ground.

A birdie here would see him bounce back to level par, it's curving, it's tracking... It's in. A tremendous putt from Fleetwood.

Can Scottie Scheffler follow him in? Almost. It stops a foot short. He'll tap in for par.

For Matt Fitzpatrick, it's also a par.

Rory McIlroy is currently in a tie for the lead at five under and is feeling pretty good after his round this morning.

"I thought for the most part, I played well," said McIlroy, the two-time Masters champion.

"I felt like I drove the ball particularly well, and I started to see that at Shinnecock, as well, a couple weeks ago.

"A continuation of putting the ball in play, and then once I do that, I feel like I can attack courses and I can setup scoring opportunities. I did that today.

"I played the par fives well.

"I think I hit all three greens in regulation.

"You know, one putt dropped for eagle and two 2-putt birdies. That always helps the card.

"Overall, good to get my first round of competitive golf on a links golf course, and it's obviously a great start to the tournament."

  18. Early bogeys for Scheffler and Fleetwoodpublished at 14:22 BST 9 July

    Scheffler +1, M. Fitzpatrick E, Fleetwood +1 (2)

A long look at birdie for Matt Fitzpatrick on the second, it takes a ride over a few bumps and ridges on the green before it halts a few feet past the hole.

Tommy Fleetwood is right of the green and chipping from some light rough. He undercooks it, though, and the ball stops a good bit short.

No birdie for Scottie Scheffler either, and his par putt whistles past the hole too. An early bogey for the world number one.

Likewise, it's a bogey for Fleetwood, who left himself a lot to do after that chip.

Par for Fitzpatrick, no issues there.

  19. Rahm is backpublished at 14:12 BST 9 July

Outside of the majors, Jon Rahm has just hit his first golf shot at a PGA Tour event since late 2023 when he made his switch to LIV Golf.

He's out with Alex Fitzpatrick and Rasmus Hojgaard.

  20. Postpublished at 14:03 BST 9 July

    Scheffler E, M. Fitzpatrick E, Fleetwood E (1)

Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood are all short of the first green with their second shots.

Scheffler gives himself a decent birdie look at the par five, but can't convert.

Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick also walk away with pars.
