    Scheffler -2, Fleetwood -2, M. Fitzpatrick -2 (11)

Scottie Scheffler's birdie putt pulls up short, as does Tommy Fleetwood's.

A far trickier third for Matt Fitzpatrick out of a greenside pot bunker, but he manages to get right under it and drop it just a foot or so shy of the hole.

A routine par putt to follow for Scheffler, but it burns the left edge, and he marks the ball a foot from the hole to give himself time to recalibrate after that error.

A bogey, ultimately, for Fitzpatrick and Scheffler. Fleetwood takes his par and bolts to the next tee.

    Smith -4 (13)

England's Jordan Smith is very much aboard the birdie train.

He makes it four in a row since the turn with another lengthy - and inch perfect - putt to move within one shot of the lead.

    Scheffler -3, Fleetwood -2, M. Fitzpatrick -3 (10)

210 yards to the pin, wind in his face, hitting from some knee-high grass, and Tommy Fleetwood sticks it pin high.

It's a bit of an old trope at this point, but this is a different sport for these guys.

Scottie Scheffler is once again below the hole, but it's not a terribly difficult putt for him, you'd suspect.

Differing fortunes for Matt Fitzpatrick, who dumps one in a bunker.

  5. Postpublished at 16:43 BST 9 July

    Scheffler -3, Fleetwood -2, M. Fitzpatrick -3 (10)

Off the tee at the 11th, Tommy Fleetwood is in the scary stuff down the right-hand side.

Scottie Scheffler has found the first cut of rough down the same side, with Matt Fitzpatrick fizzing one straight as an arrow down the fairway.

The 11th is currently playing as the second-hardest hole on the course. Let's see if Fitzpatrick can take advantage.

  6. Another Rahm bogeypublished at 16:41 BST 9 July

    Rahm +3, R Hojgaard -3, A Fitzpatrick E (8)

Jon Rahm's woes continue with another bogey on eight, where he is wide left off the tee and in a greenside bunker in two.

Alex Fitzpatrick saves par with a neat up and down and down - capped with 12-foot putt - while Rasmus Hojgaard cards a less stressful four.

  7. Double bogeypublished at 16:40 BST 9 July

    Schott +11 (13)

Freddy Schott appeared to have stopped the bleeding with two straight pars after seven successive bogeys.

However, he sprays his tee shot at 13 miles left and has to retee. The German plays a pretty good hole from there, but it's still a double-bogey six.

    He's now 11 over par.

  8. Birdies for Scheffler & Fleetwoodpublished at 16:35 BST 9 July

    Scheffler -3, Fleetwood -2, M. Fitzpatrick -3 (10)

    Here comes Scottie Scheffler.

Three birdies in a row for the world number one as he rolls in a 16ft putt - right in the heart of the cup.

Matt Fitzpatrick's birdie effort is too high, but Tommy Fleetwood finds the bottom of the hole as he moves to two under.

Scottie Scheffler is first on the tee after the turn.

“He hits it so far he can’t see it,” a man in front of me says after Scheffler squints in the sun searching for the flight path.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood similarly melt their tee shots down the fairway.

  10. Postpublished at 16:27 BST 9 July

    Novak -4 (14), Reed -4 (8)

There haven't been too many changes at the top of the leaderboard since the early starters finished, but two Americans have got to four under.

Andrew Novak has just reached the stadium hole at 15 one back of the leaders, while Patrick Reed has just stiffed his approach from 153 yards at the eighth and taps in the subsequent putt.

  11. Hojgaard upstaging Rahmpublished at 16:27 BST 9 July

    Rahm +2, R Hojgaard -3, A Fitzpatrick E (7)

Jon Rahm has plenty of work to do on his return to PGA action.

The Spaniard began with a messy bogey six after finding trouble off the tee and things aren't improving much since.

A further shot was dropped on the par-three fifth, with Rahm currently two over through seven.

Playing partner Rasmus Hojgaard, though, is flying at three under after an eagle on seven, while Alex Fitzpatrick is level par.

World number one Scottie Scheffler is first to putt after a long look at it… and it’s in.

"What a man," someone in front of me shouts. Fair enough aye.

Tommy Fleetwood has a tough act to follow, but he burns the edge and it scoots well past the cup.

    Right, Matt Fitzpatrick time.

Another tremendous attempt sees him join Scheffler with a birdie.

Fleetwood tidies up for his par.

  13. Reed on the chargepublished at 16:15 BST 9 July

    Reed -3 (7)

Patrick Reed already has two DP World Tour wins this season and is making a hot start in his pursuit of a third.

The American - who tops the Race to Dubai standings - is three under for his first seven holes.

Two of his birdies were short range before a cracking 25-footer on seven.

Scottie Scheffler’s approach into the par-three ninth is about 40 feet below the pin, he’s left himself a nice uphill putt for a birdie.

Up next, Matt Fitzpatrick, pin high and roughly the same distance away.

Tommy Fleetwood next, can he get any closer?

Nope, but that’s still three mighty fine attempts with the wind picking up and dying down without a moments notice.

    Harman -1 (9)

    Jack Herrall
    BBC Sport Scotland

A hopeful wee kid asks Brian Harman for his ball as he walks off the ninth green.

“Sorry bud, I gotta keep using ‘em,” says the 2023 Open champion, smiling back.

Scant consolation to a kid who needs something to show off to his pals, though.

There’s quite a crowd forming around this green now too, I assume the Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood, and Matt Fitzpatrick trio will be joining us shortly.

Maybe he’ll have more luck with them.

  16. Birdie for Schefflerpublished at 16:07 BST 9 July

    Scheffler -1, Fleetwood -1, M. Fitzpatrick -2 (8)

Two excellent putts at the eighth from this featured group.

Scottie Scheffler rolls in for his second birdie of the day, while Tommy Fleetwood pours in an eight-footer to save par.

No such luck for Matt Fitzpatrick, but a solid par and he stays at two under.

    Norwegian fans

When you’re strolling through the crowds at any golf tournament, there’s always an eclectic mix of headwear.

First corner I turn this afternoon and there’s a group of Norwegian bucket hats meandering along one of the crosswalks.

It could be a pretty significant sporting weekend for them if Viktor Hovland, and his fellow countrymen in the USA, have a good few days.

At least two more Norwegian flags have passed me by since. They’re out in force today.

Why do they feel the need to fix what wasn’t broken with Scheffler? His footwork is not the same.

    Scheffler E, Fleetwood -1, M. Fitzpatrick -2 (7)

Scottie Scheffler holds his nerve to roll in a six-footer for par after a scrappy hole.

A much easier ride for his playing partners though - Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick both make birdie.

  20. Bogey trainpublished at 15:43 BST 9 July

    Schott +9 (10)

We mentioned Freddy Schott's difficult start earlier on and it's not got any better for the German, who won his first title on the DP World Tour earlier this year.

He has made nine bogeys in 10 holes, with seven in a row.
