    McIlroy -4 (14)

Rory McIlroy's shot into the par-three 14th is all over the pin.

But it takes a firm enough first bounce and trundles on to around 18 feet.

He can't get the downhill tester to drop so it's just a par.

In other news, it looks like the wind is really picking up at Aronimink. That could make things very challenging for the leaders.

  2. Rahm makes one!published at 19:05 BST 16 May

    Rahm -3 (5)

The old reverse commentator's curse strikes! Just after talking about how Jon Rahm couldn't make a putt, of course he goes and rolls in a birdie from 30 feet.

That's his longest birdie attempt of the day as well! You're welcome Jon...

    Young -2, Thomas -2 (19:00 BST)

When it comes to multiple US PGA champions, Justin Thomas is one of 16 players to have won this major twice.

However, a third success would lift him up level with Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead and Brooks Koepka, with only Tiger Woods (four) and Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen (both five) ahead of him on the all-time list.

Meanwhile, Cameron Young, who has made the headlines for switching ball to one he says gives him more spin control, won at the Players and more recently the Cadillac Championship and looks ready to make the step up to major champion after going close at the Masters.

Both get away without a hitch.

  4. Birdie for Raipublished at 19:01 BST 16 May

    Rai -3 (3)

Three holes in and Aaron Rai already has two birdies as he creeps up to within a shot of the lead.

And his second in as many holes is set up by an exquisite pitching wedge to five feet.

Apparently the Englishman does not use the wedge that matches his set of irons and instead carries a specialised one made by a different manufacturer.

  5. Big miss by Scottiepublished at 18:55 BST 16 May

    Scheffler -2, Puig -2 (1)

Great start from Scottie Scheffler with a textbook drive and a stunning approach to just four feet - but the putter lets him down as he slides it by the hole and has to settle for par.

David Puig matches the four despite being 30 feet away after his second shot.

  6. McIlroy ties leadpublished at 18:55 BST 16 May

    McIlroy -4 (13)

    Now then. Driveable par-four.

Rory McIlroy's out with the three wood but he doesn't like it. Hooked into the bunker.

He has plenty of green to work...and that's a fine effort, landing it short and releasing it out to five feet.

And he drains the putt! The Masters champion is tied for the lead.

Considering he was outside the top 100 after 18 holes, this is a superb recovery.

  7. Rahm can't make a puttpublished at 18:53 BST 16 May

    Rahm -2 (4)

Oh it's a case of close but no cigar so far for Jon Rahm, who has given himself good birdie looks on all four holes so far but has only been able to get one to drop.

It's about as close as he's come on the fourth, with a right-to-lefter from 16 feet just pulling up inches short of the hole when bang on line.

  8. Niemann the coming manpublished at 18:51 BST 16 May

    Niemann -3, Hoge +1 (16)

Joaquin Niemann the latest player to go on a charge.

The Chilean eagles the 16th after backing up a monster drive with a crisp iron on to the green which lands two feet from pin. Niemann duly taps in.

Five under for the round so far.

  9. Par start for Abergpublished at 18:44 BST 16 May

    Aberg -2 (1)

Don't sleep on Ludvig Aberg today. The Swede shot 66 yesterday and when he gets on a roll he's not scared to go low at all.

Aberg starts his third round with a par at the first after just failing to drain a 20 footer for birdie.

  10. Scheffler on "absurd" pinspublished at 18:42 BST 16 May

    Scheffler -2, Puig -2 (18:40)

Scottie Scheffler called some of the pin placements "absurd" on Friday as he battled back from a poor start to card a 71 to stay right in the hunt.

"They are the hardest I've ever seen," said the world number one, who will like the look of today's flags a lot more.

Playing partner today, David Puig, didn't have too many problems with the pins as he shot 67 yesterday to join Scheffler on two under, with the talented young Spaniard playing superbly on these tough putting surfaces.

Puig was the best putter in the field on Friday topping the Strokes Gained rankings while Scheffler, who was sixth on Thursday, was 124th!

  11. Burns smoking birdiespublished at 18:41 BST 16 May

Big moves all over the shop at the moment.

Sam Burns reels off four birdies in a row - the pick of them a 23-foot putt on the 15th - to move within a shot of the lead with two holes left to play.

This could be a handy round for the American.

  12. Clean card for Kaymerpublished at 18:41 BST 16 May

    Kaymer -2 (14)

Remember Martin Kaymer was asked at the previous champions' dinner if he still plays golf? Well not only does he still play but he's putting together a fine round at Aronimink.

The two-time major champion just missed a great chance for birdie on 14, but even without that he's currently four under for his round and hasn't made a single bogey.

Not bad for someone who apparently had retired from golf...

  13. Postpublished at 18:40 BST 16 May

    McIlroy -3, Koepka +1 (12)

The pin is cut tight to the right edge on 12 and Rory McIlroy shows some restraint, firing away from the flag.

With a driveable par-four up next and a par-five to come later, this isn't a hole to be messed with.

He comes up shy with his lengthy effort to tie the lead and accepts a par.

It's a bogey for three-time champion Brooks Koepka, however, and he's moving in the wrong direction.

  14. Birdie for Raipublished at 18:39 BST 16 May

    Rai -2 (2)

Aaron Rai opened with a par but now gets in on the birdie fest currently taking place at Aronimink from just inside 20 feet.

The Englishman ended in a tie for 19th at Quail Hollow 12 months ago and is yet to finish inside the top 10 of a major.

  15. Eagles galore for Reitanpublished at 18:36 BST 16 May

    Reitan -2 (65)

Brilliant round from Truist Championship winner Kristoffer Reitan, with two bogeys, three birdies and two eagles in his round of 65.

Reitan, who almost holed his tee shot on the par-four 13th, eagled that and the 16th to become just the second player in 30 years with two eagles in four holes at the US PGA Championship - Graham DeLaet did it in consecutive holes at Quail Hollow Club in 2017!

  16. Birdie for Schauffelepublished at 18:35 BST 16 May

    Fowler E, Schauffele -3 (11)

Xander Schauffele continues to move up the leaderboard as he notches his fifth birdie of the round on the 11th.

The American's irons have been top class so far today and a superb approach shot leaves him with a simple putt from two feet.

Rickie Fowler misses a birdie chance of his own after applying a fraction too much speed on his putt on the hole. He's level par.

  17. Rose pars last for 65published at 18:32 BST 16 May

    Rose -2 (65)

Justin Rose's approach into the 18th stays on the right level and he has a 15-footer for a 64.

Awww, it just runs out of pace, but that's an excellent 65 for the Englishman - six birdies and one bogey - and he'll have a much later tee time on Sunday.

He's done what he needed to do today.

  18. Postpublished at 18:29 BST 16 May

    McIlroy -3, Koepka E (11)

Rory McIlroy is absolutely smoking his driver today.

Another belter of 321 yards up the 12th fairway and he's thinking of another birdie.

  19. Kirk finishes with costly sixpublished at 18:25 BST 16 May

    Kirk -2 (65)

From just off the front edge of the 18th green, Chris Kirk has an outside shot at birdie to become just the fifth player to shoot 62 in a major championship round.

Hmmm, it's not even close and he'll have a speedy eight-footer to save par. It slides by...and then he misses the tiny putt coming back for bogey!

    Dear oh dear.

That's a sickening end to what had been a nearly faultless round.

  20. McIlroy moves within onepublished at 18:22 BST 16 May

    McIlroy -3, Koepka E (11)

Another glorious drive from Rory McIlroy leaves him with barely more than a flick in at the par-four 11th.

He goes slightly long, guarding against the ridge short of the pin, and drops the birdie putt in the front door!

McIlroy is one off the lead, folks. This is going to be a fun evening.
