Tommy Fleetwood has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after finishing at -7 but receiving rapturous support all afternoon: "It was cool. Of course, I'm going to look at me finishing two, three shots off and think what could I have done better. That aside, walking up the 18th hole, I've dreamt of that as a kid and all my life. That ovation surpasses anything I can imagine.

"I haven't won The Open, I'd have loved to and I'll keep chasing but that was incredibly special.

"I was playing great and felt really good. It was just the terrible mistake on the ninth fairway. I hit it over the back and that's one place you can't hit it.

"I felt fine. I still actually felt on 12 there was a chance. I just couldn't quite do it. When I look back, there will be things I'll learn from but overall I felt really good out there today."

On the crowds: "It's so unique and so special. I wanted to take it in as much as I could all week. The crowd have been out of this world. Very few people get to experience that in their career. I'm incredibly grateful to everyone for what they gave me this week.

"It's a very special place."

There's groans from the crowd, though, when Kim Si-woo rolls his putt just wide of the hole at the 17th and has to tap in for par.

Kim needs an eagle on the last - the toughest hole on the course.

His bid to become the first Asian winner of the Claret Jug looks to be over.

Sam Burns looks frustrated as his second shot goes left of the green.

Now, what can Ryan Fox produce with his third from the fairway? A good one - he'll have a 10-footer for birdie and the outright lead.

One of the best shots I've ever seen from Kim Si-woo.

Knowing he needs something quite special to get himself in contention Kim Si-woo hits a huge approach shot which skids on to the green.

Kim then deftly chips himself to within 13 feet to leave himself with a birdie chance. Now or never for the South Korean.

No chance for Ryan Fox to reach the 17th green in two, his ball right up against the lip of the bunker.

He advances his ball 100 yards up the fairway, with another 140-odd yards left to the flag.

Ryan Fox won twice on the PGA Tour in 2025 - both of those wins secured in play-offs.

His tee shot on 17 looks to be perfect... but runs a couple of yards too far and dribbles into the bunker.

I'd be surprised if Bryson DeChambeau had not entertained visions of striding down the 18th fairway, at minimum, being well in the mix to win this tournament.

It's not transpired like that and he's finishing five back of the leaders.

Small consolation for the LIV man - after three missed cuts at the majors this year, at least he's ended that particular niggle.

He won't care too much but Tommy Fleetwood has at least matched some Open history as he's tied Ernie Els' record of seven straight sub-70 rounds in the competition.

Scottie Scheffler was on a similar run but shot 70 yesterday while Bryson DeChambeau was on the same as Fleetwood but is two over heading down the last.

Lucas Herbert's chances of winning The Open are gone after a messy bogey six at the 17th.

A wild drive, he was bunkered in three and two-putted to drop back to six under.

A shame. He's hung in well after that stunning 62 on Friday afternoon.

It's looking increasingly likely that if anyone is going to overhaul clubhouse leader Cameron Young, they're going to come from the final group.

But they need to avoid trouble...

Sam Burns, from the middle of the fairway, finds the bunker at the front of the 16th green. He makes par.

Ryan Fox, hitting his second from the left rough, pleads: "Please be right." And it is right... about 10 feet left to get back into a share of the lead.

And it's there! Fox is co-leader again, with the par-five 17th up next.

If you have your windows open in Formby, you may well have heard that cheer on the last for Tommy Fleetwood.

It wasn't quite the guttural roar of the surprise chip-in or a long putt but it had a couple of warm, genuine aftershocks that looked to truly touch the Southport man.

He walked off 18 with a look of 'what if' etched across his face. Four rounds in the 60s but not quite enough this time. Will his time come or will he be destined to be one of golf's major nearly men?

I know Tommy reasonably well and I feel for him. I know he wanted to go better but if you're not going to win that was the way to finish.

Not many pros get the opportunity to play a major where you're from. He's been thinking about that for a long time.

What a finish in front of his home fans - that was incredible.

We're all happy and smiling and pleased for him. But what could have been!

Tommy Fleetwood's Open odyssey ends with a birdie! That's a round of 68 and a finish of seven under, looking like being just a couple of shot short of achieving his Open Championship dream on his home course.

He's been roared on from start to finish, he's tried his heart out but he's just come up short.

He'll be so proud of his efforts having to play under such a weight of expectation, but there'll also be some disappointment there was well as but for a few mistakes here and there he could be lifting that Claret Jug.

He's come close in majors before but this one will cut a little deeper, and will sting for a good while - a huge case of what could have been.

Has this knocked Kim Si-woo out of contention for the Claret Jug?

The South Korean's approach shot to the 16th is in the rough behind the greenside bunkers.

He chips on to the green with his third shot but a putt of just under 20 feet misses the cup. Bogey.

Oh dear oh dear.

After a horrid pull off the 17th tee yesterday, Lucas Herbert hoicks another one into the bushes.

Fortunately for him, they've found his ball and he lashes one back into play.

Tommy Fleetwood hits a stunner of an approach to the 18th green, almost holing the thing, and the crowd responds with a huge roar.

The Royal Birkdale faithful then cheer their man all the way onto the final green in some really emotional scenes given how much he wanted it and how much they wanted it for him.

Fleetwood puts his hand on his heart and waves to his fans with just the hint of a tear in his eye. He's not had his best game this week but he's been pretty close, and he's given it absolutely everything he's got.

Great scenes. And no, I'm not - you're crying.

An R&A announcement:

And what a belter of a week it's been for the fans, with not a drop of rain!
