An emotional Lewis Hamilton took his first victory for Ferrari in a compelling Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix as championship leader Kimi Antonelli retired from second place with four laps to go.

It was a dramatic end to a gripping race that had tension and jeopardy throughout as Hamilton secured his first victory since the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, when he was still driving for Mercedes.

The win turned on a virtual safety-car (VSC) period which allowed Hamilton, on a different pit-stop strategy to Mercedes, to pit and retain the lead.

Meanwhile, Antonelli had just passed Russell for second place with five laps to go after a race-long battle when his car ground to a halt because of an electrical shutdown.

"Grazie a tutti!" cried Lewis Hamilton over the team radio after winning his maiden grand prix for Ferrari.

And a thumbs up from the top step of the podium.

The seven-time world champion is off the mark in the "red car" and is now only 41 points behind title leader Kimi Antonelli following the teenager's technical retirement in round seven.

What an emotional day this has been if you're a Hamilton fan. How many more wins can he claim this season? We don't have long to wait until the next one.

More from Lewis Hamilton, speaking to Sky Sports: "Where do I start? I couldn't have done this without this amazing team. The support I've had from them in the last year, even more so coming into this year. It was such a difficult year. You know, my fans really saved me through such a difficult moment last year. Every day having this dream of, since I was a kid. We just mentioned in 1996, Michael [Schumacher] won here for Ferrari and I remember watching the red car and always wondering what it will be like to be winning in that car. What it would be like, standing on that podium, being that person to give the team the moment to sing the national anthem. There's nothing like it. It came from a low place to get back here. Never giving up on yourself and keep on trying.

On the negative comments: "The people that say the negative stuff, I often use that as fuel. I think it is easy to be negative and the ones that is worse is the drivers who know what it is like in the field to do the job. It was really the fans that rescued me as I said. Several of the fans were shouting to me, don't forget who you are. That really resonated with me, I had to question how do I find myself again and find the courage to keep going.

"The team have been amazing, there was a lot of things I wanted changing. There is still a lot of work to do. To be on the podium, to get across in the red car, wow. I've dreamt of it as a kid. Lots of love to my family, to everyone in the UK, the [England] World Cup team, I will be supporting you. This is just the beginning. Nothing is impossible, just one step at a time."

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, speaking to Sky Sports after retiring in Barcelona: "I had no power steering anymore, there was no power steering suddenly and that was the end of my race.

"I don't want to take any credit for today's race, I don't think I had a role in it at all. I think Lewis and the team have done the job and eventually got the win all by themselves. I could have stayed two or three corners ahead of Lewis but that would have been very stupid from me. Lewis won with an incredible margin, he's been incredible, in the last three weekends he's been really on it and he deserves all of it.

"It's up to me to up my game, to find my confidence with this car, to put everything together and hopefully with a clean weekend, the last four weekends haven't been very clean, I've had a lot of issues so I'm looking forward to having clean races, getting in the rhythm again and hopefully fighting in the front."

Here's George Russell, who started on pole position in Barcelona and finished second, speaking to Sky Sports: "Congrats to Lewis, he had a really impressive race and a really impressive day yesterday. I don't think we expected to see that sort of pace from him and Ferrari so it was special to see him back on the top step.

"From my side it was not straight forward at all. I think the three stop would have suited my style a bit better because I was struggling a lot more towards the end of the stints. I'll just take the positives away. It was a clean Friday, a clean Saturday and came away with 18 points which is more than I have done in the last two races

"I was struggling towards the end of the stints, I need to review why that was. In the first stint I felt very comfortable on the medium tyre. I felt we pitted really early. Lewis committed to a three stop and I think we should have committed to our own strategy, that's something I want to pick up with the team because I was managing quite a lot at the start. I thought we converted to a three, when they told me we were staying on the two, that was a challenge."

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli speaking to Sky Sports after retiring in Barcelona: "I think we were the quickest on the track today, OK Lewis at the end was very quick, but the second stint we were super quick. The pace was very good, of course Lewis after the VSC was impossible to catch. By the way, I'm very happy for him, good to see he got his first win with Ferrari. From my side, very disappointing, I feel a bit empty to be fair right now. But to be fair these things happen to everyone. The most important thing now is to come back stronger.

On Lewis Hamilton being a potential championship threat: "Ferrari are in incredible form, they're very reliable but they're quick as well. We just need to maximise every opportunity that we have and try to do our best. It's not going to be straightforward but I'm already looking forward to the next one because I want to go back to where we were finishing before."

The over-40s club unite.

Lewis Hamilton stood on the podium in Monaco last weekend with two drivers whose combined ages didn't surpass his own. He's not exactly drawing his pension, far from it obviously, but at the ripe age 41, Hamilton is one of the oldest drivers to win a Formula 1 grand prix.

He's had to wait nearly two years to taste victory - his last win was at the Belgian Grand Prix in 2024 for Mercedes - but with his long wait for a Ferrari triumph now in the bag on pace, what chance do you give to the seven-time world champion taking the title fight to Kimi Antonelli and the Silver Arrows for the rest of the season?

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur, speaking to Sky Sports about Lewis Hamilton's win: "It is a very good feeling because we had tough moments. The recovery is even more important. Very good feeling for us, for the team and Lewis. For sure today the pace was there from the beginning of the weekend and we were able to fight for pole. He was outstanding.

On whether Hamilton is back to his best: "Honestly I'm trying to calm down the bad and enthusiastic comments, It's not who we were two weeks ago and we are not world champions today. Lewis is emotional and the team is emotional. it is my job to calm down everybody. It is a huge push in terms of confidence and it will be a new start for us."

"I think we had the same strategy from the beginning of the season, when you have the pace you win the race. Sometimes we didn't have the pace and the strategy looked a bit shy. But today the most important is the pace and strategy. Lewis did a fantastic job on this."

"We are there to fight, to do the best. I told the group you have to stay calm, we are not world champions today. It's one year for Lewis that has been difficult. Sometimes he faced bad comments that he didn't deserve. I'm more than happy for him and the effort he has put in the project. "

Charles Leclerc now has to regroup following his back-to-back retirements at his home race in Monaco and today in Barcelona. The Ferrari drivers has had a rotten weekend overall, crashing out heavily on his first flying lap in qualifying yesterday.

Not only did he drop below team-mate Lewis Hamilton after Monte Carlo's result, he's now under pressure from world champion Lando Norris in the standings.

More from Ferrari race winner Lewis Hamilton on his confidence: "I think it is working my way back to my centre. I've got great prep. I have trained so hard to be here today. There is so much work that I've done and doing in the background but also the team are giving me that confidence in the changes we have made. Believing and trusting in the decisions and the things I have asked for and we are slowly starting to see that it's all coming together. I'm just happy in my life, so I'm in a good place. I love doing what I do. There's no greater feeling than racing a Formula 1 car."

On the title race: "I definitely will take it. It is a long, long way to go and they still have got great pace, as you can see. But we are going to keep working and trying to close that gap. It is not over, that's for sure."

Mercedes and Ferrari had one driver each on the podium - and the other retire - and now the gap between the two teams at the top of the constructors' championship is now 72 points.

Alpine in fifth have moved onto 60 points thanks to their double points in round seven, while sixth-placed Racing Bulls are 22 points off the French team after also collecting a good haul of points in Barcelona.

After Kimi Antonelli's retirement, what does the drivers' championship look like now?

The Italian teenager's lead has been cut down to 41 points following Lewis Hamilton's victory in Spain, with Mercedes team-mate George Russell in third, 50 points behind.

Lando Norris being back on the podium after a double DNF has moved the world champion above McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri and to within two points of fourth-placed Charles Leclerc, whose miserable weekend also ended in retirement.

McLaren's Lando Norris after finishing P3: "First of all I want to congratulate Lewis, nice to see him back on top. It was a tough race, I did my best to keep up with these guys but [they were] too quick, we stayed there, we gave ourselves a chance if anything happened and we obviously got a bit lucky with Antonelli going out.

"Very happy, very happy for the team very happy to be back on the podium. We're doing a good job as a team, we're making good progress but these guys are just doing a better job and we have to give credit to them and admit that to ourselves, that we have to keep working hard, we have to keep putting in the effort.

"We've got to keep our heads down and keep working, and we'll be there soon."

George Russell speaking after finishing P2 at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix: "Huge congrats to Lewis. I know hard he works, we spent a lot of years together at Mercedes, really pleased to see him back to the Lewis I remember. Tough day. Good to be back on the podium, good to have a clean race from my side. Ferrari were mighty impressive today and we need to keep pushing.

"Friday and Saturday were really strong and solid, today was a bit more challenging everything started off quite well, felt good in the first stint and then the last to stints it was a bit more difficult but it's good to be back here.

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari, it has always been a hugely romantic and magical story. The most famous driver in the world with the most famous team in the world. It didn't start well last year to say the least, he went through the mill emotionally and competitively. But this year he has been really back to form and Ferrari made changes to the car and this bodes well for them. Who knows what is possible now for Hamilton and Ferrari.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton who has won the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix and also his first race with Ferrari: "First I have to start and say a huge grazie to everyone here, my team here, Ferrari, everyone back at the factory, Fred for believing in me and bringing me to this team.

"I started out with a dream last year, which seemed almost impossible during my time last year, but we never gave up hope and the team just continued to lift me up. We made so many changes and so many improvements.

"On top of that, I have the greatest fanbase a sportsman could ever ask for. So thank you, thank you to everybody."

On how this win ranks among his 106 career victories: "They are all special in their own way. But, this one is something else. I watched Ferrari have all that success, when I was younger, watching it on TV and as I have been racing, I've always watched the screens and wondered what it will be like to win in that car and it has come.

"Everyone has worked hard for it and everyone deserves it. I am forever grateful to them and this is just the first of, I hope, many. Great pit stops today, great strategy. The car felt fantastic. Forza Ferrari"

Lewis Hamilton is in tears as he celebrates his maiden podium with Ferrari. It's an all-British affair as the crowds cheer on - the first time that's happened since 1968 at the US Grand Prix.

The Italian national anthem fires up and the crew below are belting it out - ans team principal Fred Vasseur is loving it.

Hamilton is handed the winner's trophy and throws it up into the air to the delight of the crowd watchng on.
