Well I take it all back, Lando Norris how did he do that? Unbelievable start. The two Mercedes were so worried about fighting each other, they left a giant gap that Lando Norris just welcomely took his place and went right through the middle of it.

Those intermediates are being lashed in the bin by Oscar Piastri. The Australian has come into the pits for an early change.

Oliver Bearman has made some great moves and the Haas driver is now running in 11th place after starting 16th.

Lando Norris is under pressure on the green rubber and now Kimi Antonelli is leading the race!

The official timing is still showing a 70 laps but I will be amazed if that is the case, they are pushing Arvid Lindblad now into the pit lane, wheeled along and back to his garage but I don't think we are going to see any meaningful race from him. It does give everybody more opportunity to get temperature into their tyres.

Race engineer: "Oscar, our tyres have dropped quite a lot."

Piastri: "If we fit now we will have warm tyres, so I don't know. These inters are a mistake now"

    And now we get going!

Lando Norris has taken the lead of the race on the intermediate tyres! George Russell has dropped down to third behind his team-mate Kimi Antonelli, while Oscaer Piastri has lost a place and is now fifth. Lewis Hamilton is fourth.

The radio messages are continuing between Oscar Piastri and McLaren. The Australian definitely thinks these inters are the wrong choice, but his engineer is trying to calm his fears by highlighting the soft compound will be cold.

Are we going to start now? Nope. It's another formation lap. The cars were lined up ready to go but we'll have to wait a little bit longer for lights out.

  8. Team Radio - Piastri to McLarenpublished at 21:07 BST 24 May

Piastri: "It feels like I'm floating around quite a bit on these tyres already."

"I think it is time for slicks."

It's an extra formation lap that has just been declared by race control. But, confusion, up and down the grid. The lights being held for so long.

Lindblad: "It's not going in gear."

So, the cars are going round Circuit Gilles Villeneuve once again after that abandoned start, as Arvid Lindblad is being pushed off the grid in the stricken Racing Bulls.

Oscar Piastri has been on the radio to say the track is dry, so maybe ditch these intermediate tyres?

It is an extraordinary tyre mix. You don't normally see that because it is a dry circuit, there is no question about that. It is not raining properly here in Montreal for quite some time although it has been drizzly, misty drizzle all morning.

I think the thinking is, in these cold temperatures what happens is that first of all it is hard to get the slick tyres up to temperature, even the softs. When they don't get up to temperature, they grain which is when the surface [of the tyres] tear and you lose grip.

The inters will be easier to get up to temperature but won't last as long because they are a softer compound. Let's just see what happens.

    Or maybe not!

The cars are heading off for an extra formation lap after a long wait to get going.

Ah. Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad is stuck on the grid.

George Russell has made it to the front of the grid, closely followed by the rest of the pack. The track looks dry, but I guess we'll find out shortly...

There is a whole new set of challenges this year, with all the energy management talks that's been going along at the start of the season.

It is a different way of driving the car. That does include how you manage wet weather, that iis a different dynamic to the whole process.

  16. 'Race each other' - Wolffpublished at 21:02 BST 24 May

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, speaking to Sky Sports on yesterday's sprint race: "What we've said is race. Race each other, consider the other driver as a competitor. You're not going to give each other room and that's fine."

"The challenge of the weather, that is the same for everyone. This is the condition for the drivers. We can't underestimate the McLarens and Ferraris behind us."

It doesn't look like it's raining, but the fans are well and truly dressed for wet conditions. McLaren along with a couple of other drivers, are starting on the intermediates from lights out.

The two Mercedes drivers, they have the best car, there is no two ways about it. They have a car that is quicker and if they get everything right, they've got the opportunity to go ahead and win the race. And it will be between those two.

So the official F1 site has given a right old mix starting tyres for this Canadian Grand Prix. The Mercedes pair are on softs, McLaren are showing with the green intermediates, Arvid Lindblad and Pierre Franco Colapinto in the top 10 have opted for mediums, Ferrari have softs, too.

If this was to be a dry race, a one-stop race strategy starting on the mediums and switching to the hards would be a good bet.
