One thing to say about putting fresh tyres on is, the more rubber you've got on the tyres, the easier it is to keep temperatures. So maybe that is what they are thinking, if it does rain but only for a very short time, maybe it is easier to keep the tyres hot and grippy in that wet weather, if they are fresh.

Team engineer: "So, possible rain in the next couple of laps. Should affect turn 7 and 8 first, could get heavy."

Charles Leclerc is questioning why he stopped then? Is the rain actually making an appearance? The Monegasque driver is losing ground stuck in traffic, as Lando Norris, Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri continue in the top three places.

I can only conclude from that, that the Mercedes don't think there's rain coming, because why else would you stop now now for some fresh tyres?

This is where the drivers really are exposed as whether they have got the instinct they need to survive. We've heard the news with Checo, 'we want to survive this'. They're not talking about being flooded or something like that, they are talking about making it through by keeping the same tyres on, not coming in for a pit stop because it sounds to me like there is going to be a short downpour and may just last a very little amount of time.
