The Belgium international has his neck checked out and appears okay to continue.

Aston Villa are looking to win their opening two Premier League matches of a season for a fourth time, having done so in 1995-96, 1999-00 and 2020-21.

And the hosts immediately settle in to their shape as Arsenal enjoy a little period of possession.

Unai Emery has shuffled the pack for this season, has sold a few players and brought some more bodies in the door. It is interesting that he only used Amadou Onana last week [of the new arrivals], almost as if you only go into the team when you are fully versed in what the manager wants you to do.

The sun is shining and Villa park is rocking as the Aston Villa and Arsenal players gather in the tunnel.

They are running slightly later than advertised apparently due to a communication issue between the match officials and VAR team, which has to be sorted before the game gets under way.

Manchester City

Man City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was a good game. We started really well. With the transition they made a good goal but we played really, really well. I am really pleased to start the season that way."

On striker Erling Haaland's hat-trick: "He is so reliable on penalties. Assist for the second, fantastic for the third. Last season he struggled a lot, especially at the beginning. He felt tired and niggles most of the time. This time with the rest with no Euros he has arrived with a good vibe. The numbers are unbelievable."

On Ilkay Gundogan's return: "I was not thinking to let him play. They are a good threat in the transitions. Gundogan reads the game perfectly. Incredible welcome from everyone. I am happy because I know he is incredibly satisfied to be back."

On whether Savinho has settled into the team quicker than expected: "Yes. Not just the minutes but he played really good. The second half dropped a little but but his contribution offensively and defensively was really good. "

The next game up for Everton is Bournemouth, a must win game for both teams it seems now.

Sean Dyche is under real pressure. Can he buy players between now and then? He may even lose more players before then. Can he get some players back fit? There's some really big problems for the manager to sort out.

Southampton boss Russell Martin speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "First half there was a lot of tension and it led to them transitioning a lot. After their goal, we were chasing it and it became a lot more open. It looked like we could cause problems.

"We don't possess the quality at the top end of the pitch that they do and I'm really annoyed to concede the goal from the set play after the amount of work we do on them.

"We're on top and they have some breakaway chances, We have two balls across the face of the goal and the guys are watching. We are going to keep learning but I've seen enough moments to feel enthused and with a little more belief and work, we'll be fine.

"We need that goal to relax everyone really. I get it after the last time the team was in the Premier League but we're here now. The performances have been OK and everyone will relax, I'm sure."

As soon as the first goal went in, Everton looked deflated and dejected. Tottenham capitalised on that. Ruthlessness is not what we have always associated with them but that is something that it looks as if Ange Postecoglou has hammered home. The manager will be very happy with that today.

"We played well last week and we dominated the game, today was a bit different. The lads had a strong mindset and we got a really good goal early on and we didn't let off after that."

On defence and Micky van de Ven: "There aren't many centre-halves like Micky, he is a great athlete. Last year when we had our back four fit, it made a big difference to us.

"We have to share the workload, at the moment we don't have midweek games, in the international break we have to manage him [Van de Ven], Romero and Destiny Udogie as they have had an interrupted pre-season."

On hopes this season: "I always have hope and I am a optimistic at heart and you need to be in our game, there is plenty that can bring you down.

"Last week's performance was really good, but when you don't get the result there is always a bit of doubt there."
