Not impossible Rob, but if Spain and Lamine Yamal continue playing like they did against Saudi Arabia yesterday then you do fear for Uruguay.

Cape Verde have been brilliant though, haven't they? Topping a group that also includes Spain? What a story that would be.

We will be checking in on reaction to both Spain's win and Cape Verde's draw in a moment, after we have had a look at what the future could hold for Mo Salah.

Salah's international impact for Egypt at this World Cup mirrors the influence he had at Liverpool in his nine-year stint.

So where might the 34-year-old end up?

Liverpool reporter Aadam Patel has assessed his options...

If Spain lose to Uruguay (or draw) and Cape Verde get a big enough win against Saudi, who have been awful, Cape Verde will top the group. That's not impossible at all.

Also Uruguay's draw means Scotland have probably qualified already, even if they get thrashed by Brazil. All they need is 4 teams to finish in third place with 2 points or fewer. Groups A, L and now H virtual certainties, E a strong possibility (and other possibilities).

You just fried my brain Marc, but I am sure Scotland fans will love to read this. I also think you have just proved my previous point...

    New Zealand 1-3 Egypt

Mohamed Salah was a rather peripheral figure in the first half against New Zealand, but boy did he take the game by the scruff of the neck in the second.

His interchange with Mostafa Zico for the second goal, a neat pass into the box and then gliding into space to meet Zico's perfect backheel, allowed him to stroke home the goal which completed the turnaround and helped him earn player of the match honours.

Marc and Jack, you both make very reasonable points that I can't argue against.

But please get back in touch over the next few days to tell me that you haven't been obsessively checking the knockout draw as it updates.

And I am sure Scotland fans will by now be very well acquainted with the third-place ranking table.

It makes little to no sense to keep checking these things, but it is nigh on impossible not to once you know it is there (IYKYK)...

Right, let's get some reaction now to those overnight results, starting with the Egyptian king, Mohamed Salah, who only boosted his status as his country's greatest player of all time by helping to lead them to their first-ever World Cup win.

Egypt had to come from behind against New Zealand, scoring three second-half goals.

Salah weighed in with a goal and an assist to help his side turn the match around.

In the process, the former Liverpool star also edged closer to another personal milestone...

  11. Let's play the knockout gamepublished at 07:47 BST 22 June

As it stands, the top three in both Group G and Group H will make it through to the last 32.

Check out this link to look at the full knockout draw and how it is taking shape.

Who plays who changes with every result, but here are the last-32 matches for all six as it stands:

    • Spain v Austria
    • Egypt v Czech Republic
    • Mexico v Cape Verde
    • Argentina v Uruguay (oomph)
    • Australia v Iran
    • Canada v Belgium

Quick tip for when you look at the draw, imagine it being split up into quarters to help plot each side's possible route through their first two knockout games and into the quarter-finals.

  12. Group H - standings & schedulepublished at 07:37 BST 22 June

The real Spain finally arrived at this World Cup with an impressive, relentless dismantling of Saudi Arabia.

Their 4-0 win, inspired by Lamine Yamal, helped Spain take control of Group H.

However, they will still need a result against Uruguay to go through as group winners, while second and third places also remain up for grabs.

Group H - Spain top with 4 pts, followed by Uruguay and Cape Verde on 2 pts and Saudi Arabia with 1 pt

Cape Verde continue to surprise with entertaining Uruguay draw

Cape Verde's gripping debut World Cup campaign continued as they held two-time champions Uruguay to a thrilling draw in Miami.

Having delighted fans with their shock 0-0 draw with Spain in their opener, Cape Verde took a dream lead in the 21st minute against Uruguay through Kevin Pina's long-range free-kick.

Cape Verde became more attacking after going ahead and left themselves exposed at the back.

Uruguay made the most of the extra space, with Maxi Araujo diving low to nod in an equaliser after defender Sidny Lopes Cabral flicked a delivery back towards his own goal.

Agustin Canobbio then put the South Americans ahead in first-half stoppage time, turning home an Araujo pass from close range.

However, Cape Verde found a way to hit back after the break - thanks largely to a lapse in concentration from the Uruguay defence.

Mathias Olivera tried to play the ball across his own box but did not notice the waiting Helio Varela, who controlled the ball to take it past the goalkeeper before guiding it into the back of the empty net.

Uruguay's Federico Valverde had a goal ruled out for offside after bundling the ball over the line from close range. Both sides had further chances to win it in stoppage time but neither could find a crucial third goal.

Second-placed Uruguay and third-placed Cape Verde have two points from two games in Group H and both remain in the hunt to qualify for the last 32.

Yamal on target as Spain put four past Saudi Arabia

Spain climbed to the top of Group H with their first win of this tournament as Lamine Yamal scored 10 minutes into his first World Cup start to help his side thrash Saudi Arabia.

The Barcelona teenager had been a second-half substitute in Spain's opening group game against Cape Verde, but he was unable to inspire his side to victory as the 2010 winners laboured to a deeply frustrating goalless draw.

As expected, the 18-year-old was restored to manager Luis de la Fuente's starting line-up against Saudi Arabia – and he wasted little time in making his mark.

Mikel Oyarzabal's low cross from the left evaded Saudi Arabia defender Hassan Al Tambakti before being tapped in at the far post by Lamine Yamal, who became only the second player aged 18 or younger – after Pele in 1958 – to open the scoring in a World Cup match.

Reluctant to rest on their laurels, Spain continued to swarm forward and doubled their lead through Oyarzabal, who finished low past goalkeeper Mohammad Al-Owais.

The Real Sociedad forward scored his second just three minutes later, sweeping home Dani Olmo's flick-on at the far post.

Lamine Yamal and Oyarzabal were both taken off at the interval, but their withdrawals did little to disrupt Spain's rhythm in the second half.

Al-Owais was equal to Marc Cucurella's powerful effort three minutes after the restart, only for the ball to rebound off Al Tambakti and into the back of the net to make it 4-0.

  16. Group G - standings & schedulepublished at 07:20 BST 22 June

Despite labouring to a goalless draw against Iran with 10 men, Belgium will still consider themselves favourites to beat New Zealand in their final match of Group G to qualify for the knockout stages.

Egypt, however, are in pole position to go through as group winners.

After Mohamed Salah helped them end a 92-year wait for a win at the World Cup, Egypt know that if they can follow up their victory over New Zealand with another against Iran then they will qualify for the last 32 in top spot in Group G.

Ten-man Belgium remain winless after draw with Iran

Belgium's hopes of finally fulfilling their potential on the world stage suffered a humbling setback as they were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Iran side in Los Angeles.

Belgium have now drawn back-to-back matches at this World Cup and face the prospect of a second successive group-stage exit.

But it could have been a very different story had Romelu Lukaku connected with Kevin de Bruyne's inviting cross inside the opening five minutes.

The Napoli striker - his country's all-time leading scorer - was handed his first start since June 2025 and was expected to spearhead Belgium's bid for a much-needed victory, but looked off the pace.

Instead, a string of outstanding saves from Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, coupled with a costly red card for Belgium's young defender Nathan Ngoy, condemned the Red Devils to another frustrating night on the international stage.

The result leaves the 2018 semi-finalists in danger of failing to progress from Group G. Belgium will still go through if they beat New Zealand in their final group game, but any other result would leave their progress in doubt.

For Iran, meanwhile - who have only been allowed to fly into the United States a day before each match - the draw means it is the first time they have avoided defeat in their opening two matches of a World Cup.

Salah scores to help Egypt to first World Cup win

Mohamed Salah scored one goal and created another as Egypt came from behind to beat New Zealand and secure their first-ever World Cup win.

Their 3-1 victory also ensures the Pharaohs look set to qualify from the group stage for the first time in their history.

New Zealand took a first-half lead when Finn Surman headed home Tim Payne's well-placed corner in the 15th minute.

But Egypt responded with three goals in the space of 24 second-half minutes to move top of Group G after some tactical tweaks from manager Hossam Hassan.

Mostafa Zico - named after the great Brazilian player - headed home Mohamed Hany's cross in the 58th minute.

Salah then played a neat one-two with Zico in the area before finding the bottom corner to put Egypt in front.

And the former Liverpool forward then delivered a corner for substitute Trezeguet to head home in the 82nd minute.

Egypt's first victory in their fourth World Cup - their first appearance was in 1934 - means they will win the group if they beat Iran on Saturday.

New Zealand are still searching for their first World Cup win and will need to find it against Belgium if they are to progress.
