16 World Cup goals in 27 World Cup matches, across six World Cup tournaments.

Lionel Messi's World Cup career is undoubtedly impressive. Here's a brief overview of his World Cup history:

Messi scored his first goal on the world's biggest stage against Serbia and Montenegro in 2006, just a few days before his 19th birthday.

He actually failed to score at the 2010 World Cup, but made up for it in 2014 when he scored a total of six as Argentina finished runner-up to Germany.

At Russia 2018, he added another goal to his tally against Nigeria, but it was at Qatar 2022 when he had his best return.

He became the first player in World Cup history to score in the group stage, last 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final of a single tournament.

And most importantly, he secured the one major honour missing from his glittering collection.

When Belgium do put the ball in the box, they've only got Romelu Lukaku there, they are not getting the support up to him that he needs. Yes, they are putting the ball into an area expecting him to get there but there is not another ball, it's the only ball they have so it always gets quashed.

Lukaku has to change his game now. He has not got that lightning pace anymore. He can always score goals and always will score goals, but you have to find a different way for him to score goals now because putting it in behind and him leaving defenders for dead is not happening anymore.

So, find the ball to his feet, get in and around him and put him back in again. It's just finding what is best for him to score goals so he's potent again.

It could have been a very different story had Romelu Lukaku connected with Kevin de Bruyne's inviting cross inside the opening five minutes.

The Napoli striker - his country's all-time leading scorer - was handed his first start since June 2025 and was expected to spearhead Belgium's bid for a much-needed victory, but looked off the pace.

Instead, a string of outstanding saves from Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, coupled with a costly red card for Belgium's young defender Nathan Ngoy, condemned the Red Devils to another frustrating night on the international stage.

  15. Postpublished at 10:50 BST 22 June

    Belgium 0-0 Iran

Belgium's hopes of finally fulfilling their potential on the world stage suffered a humbling setback as they were held to a goalless draw by a resilient Iran side in Los Angeles.

Belgium were unable to find a winning goal despite attempting 23 shots over the course of the 90 minutes.

It is the most shots they have managed in a World Cup match without scoring since 1994.

Joseph Silva is American but ecstatic about Cape Verde’s first goal. His grandparents are from Cape Verde.

“The first goal was beautiful, the first ever point in the World Cup. It’s a beautiful moment for Cape Verde. A little tear came out, I tried to fight it back.”

I asked him what the team means to him, and he answered: “At least people now know where Cape Verde is. If you come from Europe, you may know where Cape Verde is, but these games put Cape Verde on the map.”

  18. Uruguay's first goal was 'frustrating'published at 10:37 BST 22 June

    Cape Verde 2-2 Uruguay

Uruguay's first goal was actually quite bizarre as Federico Vinas had been holding up the leg of Cape Verde player Telmo Arcanjo to help relieve cramp, before dropping it when he realised an attack was on.

Seconds later, Uruguay swung the ball into the box and after Sidny Cabral’s header struck his own post, Maxi Araujo stooped to head in and level.

"I was upset by that – because Bielsa taught us to have fair play," said Cape Verde head coach Bubista. "That’s in his press conferences, that’s in the matches that his teams play. We learned what fair play was from his attitude.

"It felt frustrating, but that’s part of the game and part of the experience of growing with the team.

"We could have done something to prevent that situation, we could have kicked the ball off the pitch, but we’re trying to do things our own way."It’s also natural that players will sometimes feel pressured and we can say that about the Uruguay team as well. We can only grow from what happened."

Supporters of Cape Verde erupted in jubilation after Kevin Pina scored their first-ever goal in a World Cup.

The goal went in while I was reporting live on the BBC news channel from a fan zone in the capital, Praia. It felt so surreal to witness the joy, excitement, and pride displayed by the people here.

I was speaking to a supporter who told me his country had what it took to win the game against Uruguay. He hugged me live on air, in what seemed like a tacit prompt to join in the celebration.

Regardless of how far Cape Verde go in the tournament, this moment will live on forever.
