I have sunshine in Wigan, but certainly not that view.

I've definitely drawn the short straw here.

The current view out of my hotel room in Miami. Definitely not the worst!

In a previous life I was once plonked in a hotel room in Blackpool with a VHS telly combi unit and a sink next to the bed with bars over the window.

You take the rough with the smooth in this gig.

  8. How to stop Haaland? 'You've got to stop the balls in behind'published at 13:31 BST 22 June

Erling Haaland had to wait until the age of 25 not just to make his World Cup debut, but his international tournament bow too.

And the Leeds-born striker is clearly eager to make up for lost time.

"He's the opposite of Mbappe and Messi," said former Wales defender Ashley Williams. "He'll beat you without the ball, which makes it even more dangerous.

"You want to help your midfield by squeezing up, so they don't have to cover too much distance.

"But as soon as you leave the space in behind, he's going to exploit that straight away."

One of the keys to limiting Haaland's influence, Williams says, is to prevent his team-mates getting the ball to him.

"You've got to stop the balls in behind first and foremost," Williams said. "Stop the supply going into him."

Senegal had a few chances against France and they will attack this time too, while Erling Haaland is an absolute monster of an athlete up front for Norway.

You could make a case for either team to win it, but I actually fancy Senegal to edge it.

Erling Haaland helped Norway to a 4-1 victory over Iraq in their first match of the 2026 World Cup.

The 25-year old scored twice in his World Cup debut, adding to his total of 57 goals in 51 international appearances.

As things stand, Norway are at the top of Group I on goal difference.

Their second group stage opponent will be Senegal, who lost 3-1 to France.

A win in this match will ensure their spot in the round of 32.

Aymen Hussein's impact against Norway (in Iraq's World Cup opener) will not have come as a surprise for those who have followed his rise closely.

Since 2023, he has been a consistent performer for the Lions of Mesopotamia with his aerial dominance and sharp shooting inside the box.

He was Iraq's standout performer during their historic World Cup qualification campaign, scoring 12 goals - more than double that of any team-mate - as they reached the tournament via the inter-confederation play-offs.

It was Hussein who delivered when it mattered most in the qualifiers, striking the winner in a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in Guadalupe in March which sealed their World Cup berth.

However, there were questions over his form heading into the World Cup after a season where he struggled for minutes at his club Al-Karma.

He has answered the doubters with a resilient display against one of the most exciting teams in the tournament, taking his chance in the midst of adversity.

If Hussein can maintain that level, Iraq may yet believe they can progress from a challenging Group I that also includes 2022 runners-up France and Senegal.

Hussein makes it 1-1 against Norway

The scoreline told one story, but Aymen Hussein has another to tell.

He was on the losing side as Iraq suffered a 4-1 defeat by Norway in their World Cup opener, yet the prolific striker made his mark on football's biggest stage.

Hussein's superb header in the 39th minute cancelled out Erling Haaland's opener and gave the Iraq supporters a moment to cherish on the country's return to the tournament after 40 years.

Though it ultimately proved only a consolation - and was later offset by his own goal - it was still just Iraq's second-ever World Cup finals goal.

"He's that type of player who is very difficult to control in the box and I'm very happy and proud of him," said Iraq head coach Graham Arnold.

And yet Hussein's journey to the World Cup is one that could easily have taken a different turn.

    Read Hussein's story.

  17. Goalscorers stepping uppublished at 12:57 BST 22 June

A goal feast for France could well hand Kylian Mbappe the advantage in the race for the Golden Boot - as top scorer of the tournament.

The next three World Cup matches feature three of the top scorers from the first round of fixtures; Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and Mbappe.

As we near the conclusion of the second round of matches, the Golden Boot rankings are starting to take shape.

Messi is joint top with Canada's Jonathan David and Germany forward Deniz Undav on three goals, although both David and Undav have played twice.

Haaland and Mbappe are in a pack of 19 players on two goals, which includes England's Harry Kane, who also netted twice in his first match.

    Predicted score: France 4-0 Iraq

    Chris Sutton

France took a while to get going against Senegal but they just oozed quality in the second half, and they were so good to watch.

Iraq had a go against Norway and did not just sit back, but they were well beaten in the end.

The score here just relies on how the French are feeling, really. They could score 10 if they really tried but they will probably just do enough - four first-half goals and then take their foot off the gas.
