We brought in some young talent for the future, loaned out a few future gems. Got rid of some deadwood. Could have been higher if we had managed a last minute loan for a midfielder to cover for the injured Merino, other than that. No complaints

Only one incoming (Gross, club legend) and lots of outgoings (i.e Gruda). Glad we got O'Riley back in but no strengthening where we ideally needed to.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether it was a risk for the club not to strengthen, especially in defence: "Yes, but - I will have to choose my words carefully here - we were left with no other option really. Every decision we make has a long-term implication. There was no guarantee that signing someone, with the funds we had available, that it would help us in the short-term anyway.

"It is what it is, and we have been used to working in these conditions now for a while. We have only been active in one transfer window in the last four or five so I think we are under financial restrictions, we have to be really smart and we have decided to wait until the summer."

Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the club not signing anyone in January: "The decision is that the summer window is a lot easier to recruit [in]. There are a lot more players available, potentially better value for money. So the fact we had a very limited amount of money to use in the window and whether the right players were available to help us in the short term that we might need - those options weren't there for us.

"We can't sign players that don't exist. We have to work under the conditions that we are in."

I’d rate Liverpool’s a B. Keeping Andy Robertson was key and signing a defender is great, albeit we could do with him joining now. But missing out on Guehi could end up costing us top 5.

I think the signing of Netz and letting Zinchenko end the loan was wise as with Luiz. I would have liked more outgoings of deadwood. Otherwise a solid B- transfer window for Nottingham Forest. Hard to do business but I think we did the right business

  8. 'Financially it wasn't possible'published at 09:53 GMT 3 February

Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether the club came close to making any signings: "No, I think financially it wasn't possible. Right at the start of the window there may have been players we were looking at that were for the future - younger players that we could develop. But ultimately nothing happened.

"I didn't think there was going to be a player coming in that was going to be for the first team."

It's an ungraded (U) for Newcastle due to the inertia in this window. Time will tell if our pragmatic approach proves to be a mistake noting our burgeoning injury list and difficult run of fixtures.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether he believes the squad is strong enough after the club failed to make a signing in the winter transfer window : "The squad is OK. I think if it was a fully fit squad it would be strong in all areas. Of course it's not, so we need to get our injured players back fit. Until we do that I think there will be a slight imbalance, we're certainly stretched defensively.

"But of course, I am very happy with the squad when it's got a clean bill of health."

Aston Villa B-. Brought some really strong former players in and a couple of really promising youngsters. Would have been an A if we hadn't needed another midfielder with the injuries that we picked up recently, but PSR had their say about that didn't they.

  14. Premier League's quiet deadline daypublished at 09:28 GMT 3 February

The Premier League had its quietest ever winter transfer deadline day as just seven deals were completed for senior players on Monday.

There were also two academy signings made - James Wilson from Hearts to Tottenham and Evan Mooney from St Mirren to Arsenal - while Liverpool's £60m deal for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet will not be officially completed until the summer window.

Not a single arrival was confirmed until 19:04 GMT - four minutes after the window in the English top flight closed - with Crystal Palace announcing the signing of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves in a deal worth up to £48m.

Clubs can make signings for up to two hours after the official deadline, as long as a deal sheet is submitted before 19:00 to provide extra time for the necessary paperwork to be completed.

There were five further deals confirmed after the deadline - among them, Sunderland brought in Ecuador winger Nilson Angulo from Anderlecht in a deal worth £17.5m, while Wolves signed midfielder Angel Gomes from Marseille on loan and replaced Strand Larsen with Adam Armstrong from Southampton for £7m.

That took the overall spending in the Premier League during the winter window to more than £390m.

  15. Howe's news conference to be dominated by Tonali questionspublished at 09:22 GMT 3 February

Newcastle United have an almighty challenge on their hands at the Etihad.

No side have ever reached a Carabao Cup final after losing the first leg at home by two or more goals.

It is a huge game for the holders.

But Eddie Howe’s news conference on the eve of Wednesday’s match is unlikely to be dominated by questions concerning Manchester City.

Instead, the Newcastle head coach will also have to field a number of queries regarding the transfer window and Sandro Tonali.

A report emerged on deadline day suggesting Arsenal were exploring a move for Tonali, but Newcastle insisted the midfielder was not for sale and that there had been no contact.

Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, also denied speaking to Arsenal but, in an interview with Sky Italy, he was asked about the club’s valuation and said “that’s something we will do in March or April if Newcastle are open to it”.

Expect Howe to be asked about those comments and to stress the importance of keeping hold of the club’s best players, not least after losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer.

The Newcastle head coach will also give fitness updates on captain Bruno Guimaraes and team-mates Sven Botman and Lewis Miley, who did not feature in the defeat against Liverpool at the weekend.

  19. 'Palace having both Strand Larsen and Mateta is not a bad thing'published at 09:09 GMT 3 February

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

With all that's gone on at Crystal Palace with Marc Guehi leaving and Oliver Glasner leaving at the end of the season, I think having both Jorgen Strand Larsen and Jean-Phlippe Mateta is not a bad thing. I thought they could get sucked into a relegation battle.

  20. Can Palace salvage their season?published at 09:03 GMT 3 February

    Chris Collinson
    BBC football statistician

Crystal Palace are the biggest expected goals (xG) underperformers in Europe's top five leagues this season.

Based on the number and quality of chances they have had, a team would have scored 13 more goals than Palace have in their 24 league games (25 goals versus an xG of 38).

And Mateta has been the chief culprit for their struggles in front of goal, scoring four fewer than expected - though seven other Palace players are also underperforming their xG by one goal or more.

While only six players have scored more than his eight goals in the league this season, only Erling Haaland and Igor Thiago have a higher xG than Mateta (12).

The silver lining for the Eagles is that in order for teams and players to massively underperform their xG, they have to be good enough to get a lot of quality chances in the first place.

While you want players to take their chances, it shows that Palace and their attackers are getting a lot of things right.
