One injury to Casemiro and the whole season and carrick revolution is over. Desperately needed some midfield depth, and probably a left back too. At least some loans until the end of the season

F- Man United fan, we're in a good place to get champions league and now we're relying on kobbie and casemiro playing every game. Gambling when even a short term loan could help.

  2. Recap: Eddie Howe news conferencepublished at 11:03 GMT 3 February

Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

That's your lot from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

A news conference dominated by transfer talk, as you can imagine, after the Magpies concluded the January transfer window without a single new signing.

    Here are the top lines:

    • Howe said he was "very happy with his squad" upon the conclusion of the transfer window but admitted doing business financially "was not possible"
    • When asked if it was a risk not to strengthen the defence, he reiterated his point on financial restrictions at the club once more
    • Howe claimed the club had "no intention" to lose Sandro Tonali on deadline day, adding that other clubs will always have interest in their best players
    • The Newcastle boss said defender Jamaal Lascelles has been an "incredible servant" to the club, with the 32-year-old set to join Leicester City
    • He gave some team news before Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City
    • And finally, Howe said he had discussions with Tonali yesterday and emphasised that the Italian is "absolutely fine"
  3. 'His only focus talking to him yesterday was Man City and trying to win that game' - Howe on discussions with Tonalipublished at 11:00 GMT 3 February

    Newcastle United

A final word from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether he has spoken with Sandro Tonali to clarify the situation after reports linking Arsenal with a move for the midfielder : "Sandro is absolutely fine. I had discussions with Sandro yesterday. He is absolutely focused on the here, the now, playing for us. His only focus talking to him yesterday was Manchester City and trying to win that game so there is absolutely no issue with Sandro himself. He is very happy and he's committed.

"I find it difficult to talk about things that I don't know too much about. I can only talk about Sandro as the person and the player, and his mindset here and now. Having discussed things with him yesterday, he's absolutely fine."

Telegraph writer Luke Edwards asked Howe whether he knew who offered Tonali to Arsenal?: "If I knew everything that is written and where it had come from I would be wiser than you, and I'm not, in that respect."

Ok, we sold one of our main men, but we have done that before. Quite a few times actually. Still, we have a war chest and can look to the summer, when hopefully Iraola will still be there. Rayan looks like another diamond too.

We have needed an RB for years now but yet again the club seemingly didn't prioritise addressing this glaring issue. So frustrating! A word for Dwight McNeil. Footballers sometimes are treated like cattle, it's very unpleasant. Hoping at the next game the crowd shows him some love.

  6. 'No intention to recruit in January'published at 10:52 GMT 3 February

Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on whether the lack of business in the winter was as a result of the spending in the summer: "The summer just gone we were preparing for a season like not other, in the sense of games, and that schedule has been realised. The issue that we have has been getting injuries to players in one position that has left us vulnerable. I think there was no intention to recruit in January. The summer business was with a view to getting through to next summer."

West Ham is a E. We needed forwards, and got a couple, also needed a CB and got one at the last moment. It looks like too many numbers out though - really needed a Paqueta replacement, as we are too predictable. Don't think we have enough to stay up.

Lincoln - signed a defender with experience playing in European competition, 2 of the most highly rated strikers from the Championship on loan, one of the best young talents from the league below, extended the contracts of most of our key players and announced a takeover. 11/10

    John

Middlesbrough - A Grade on their transfers on a limited budget with hopefully a play-off place to compete for.

    Vincent

Ipswich-5/10. Two decent signings in Neil and Mehmeti, but every single fan would tell you we really needed a striker, and didn't get one. Hirst has no confidence, Azon is still not there, and the less said about Akpom, the better. We're gonna struggle to get automatic promotion, I fear.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on the fitness of Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman & Lewis Miley : "Bruno is doing well. I don't think he will make this game but there is a chance for the weekend. Sven Botman is OK. Lewis I'm not sure will make this game either. "

  10. Howe on Lascelles, Targett and club harmonypublished at 10:40 GMT 3 February

Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on why the club are willing to let Jamaal Lascelles go to Leicester and have not recalled Matt Targett from his loan at Middlesbrough when the club are struggling for numbers in defence: "It is not just for our wants and needs, there is another side to look at and that's the players' perspective. I don't think it is wise to force things on players that they don't want because you have to have a harmonious dressing room and you have to have a group that's all aligned to the same direction.

"That's no criticism of the players. Everyone has got different contract lengths and they have got to think about their long-term futures. Certainly both players are highly valued by us but we have got to make long-term decisions that affect the football club on a daily basis."

  12. 'Lascelles has been an incredible servant to the football club'published at 10:33 GMT 3 February

Man City v Newcastle (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on club captain Jamaal Lascelles, who was working on a deal to join Leicester City on Monday: "I think Jamaal has been an incredible servant to the football club, for a long time before I came. He was made captain at an early age and was so during some very difficult seasons for the football club - relegation battles where he really had to stand up and lead the group in difficult circumstances. I think he did that with real integrity and class. A really strong person, a really strong leader, very vocal.

"In my time with him here, he had a time where he had to wait for his opportunity but then ended up playing some unbelievable games for us, none more so than against PSG in the home game. In our Champions League journey he was pivotal to that and produced some unbelievable performances, probably some of the best that I have seen him play.

"So I want to play tribute to him, thank him for his service and everything he has given to the team, his team-mates and to the staff at the training ground. He's a real credit to himself."

    Sandro TonaliImage source, Getty Images

More from Eddie Howe on whether he is concerned that reports linking Arsenal with Sandro Tonali could be the start of a campaign to unsettle the Newcastle midfielder: "I don't think so but lots of things happen without my knowledge. As far as I am aware we have got a player who is an outstanding footballer and an outstanding person. He is very happy here, he has got a great relationship with me and his team-mates.

"He seems really happy within himself, so that would surprise me, but he and our best players are always going to be attracting glances from other clubs, that's just the reality of football.

"We want to keep the group together, we want to keep being progressive and, of course, Sandro plays a part in that, trying to hit his best levels and play as well as he can to help the team.

"So all encompassed, I don't see an issue but I am not in control of everything."

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe on deadline day reports linking Arsenal with a move for Sandro Tonali : "Certainly there was no intention from our side to lose Sandro at all. Eddie Howe was asked whether he felt the Carabao Cup semi-final was still in the balance, despite going into the away leg at Manchester City trailing 2-0: "We very much have to have that belief. The second goal in the first game was obviously a big disappointment for us, coming so late, but we still believe and we have to believe.

"I believe we have got the players that can go to any stadium in the world and perform and score goals. I think collectively the spirit within the group is there.

"It's going to be an almighty challenge - there is no bigger challenge than Manchester City away. I think we say that every time we play them but we believe in ourselves and are going to give it a good go."
