Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick scored a second-half double to help his side secure a first-leg victory over Olympiacos in the Champions League knockout phase play-off.

The Czech international struck twice in space of three minutes midway through the second half to earn the Bundesliga side their first away win in the knockout stages of the competition at the 10th attempt.

Schick opened the scoring with a composed finish on the hour mark, before doubling his tally moments later, heading Alex Grimaldo's corner past Konstantinos Tzolakis at the near post.

Schick's second goal, which came 144 seconds after breaking the deadlock, was a thumping header to become the highest scoring Czech player in the Champions League since the 2004/05 season.

With a 3-1 win in the first leg in Norway last week, Bodo/Glimt moved within touching distance of the round of 16.

Sondre Fet gave the hosts an early lead up in the Arctic Circle, but after hitting the woodwork, Inter equalised before the break through Sebastiano Esposito.

The visitors and three-time winners were denied by the woodwork again when Lautaro Martinez hit the post, but Bodo continued to press.

Bodo retook the lead on 61 minutes when they countered and Kapser Waarts Hogh teed up Jens Petter Hauge on the left to power home a left-footed drive into the top corner.

Inter were stunned and Bodo took full advantage to score a third when Ole Didrik Blomberg squared the ball for Hogh to tap home.

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has told in-form striker Anthony Gordon to carry on being selfish following his Champions League heroics in Qarabag.

The 24-year-old England international plundered four goals in the 6-1 play-off, first-leg victory in Baku to take his tally in this season’s competition to 10, making the most of his deployment as a central frontman.

He completed his haul with a second penalty at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, having waved away skipper Kieran Trippier’s exhortations to allow Nick Woltemade to take it, just as Alan Shearer had done to youngster Paul Robinson as he scored five in an 8-0 Premier League victory over Sheffield Wednesday in September 1999.

Asked if he wanted Gordon to have a selfish streak, head coach Howe said: “There were really big positives to take from that incident. Moments like that get blown out of all proportion, it was a very minor issue.

“It was great from Anthony that he’s got that strong enough resolve that he wants to score in every moment – and you’d want that from any player – so I’ve got no issue with him.

“I’ve got no issue with Kieran also, trying to think of the team and trying to lead in his way and be the aspiring leader that he is in every moment. I actually thought it was a real positive on all sides.

“The good thing is we scored the penalty, so that in itself is another positive. I think it showed that all the players care and we want to do well.”

Anthony Gordon scored four goals as rampant Newcastle United blew Qarabag away to take control of their last 16 Champions League play-off tie.

It took Gordon just two minutes to open the scoring after the latched on to a through ball from marauding centre-back Dan Burn and finished coolly past goalkeeper Mateusz Kochalski into the bottom corner. Newcastle did not let up from that moment and Kieran Trippier's teasing cross was headed home by the towering Malick Thiaw at the back post just a few minutes later.

Newcastle were awarded the first of two penalties on the night after Harvey Barnes' shot struck the arm of the sliding Matheus Silva as the Qarabag defender attempted to block a shot from inside the box. Following a review by the video assistant referee (VAR), referee Espen Eskas was sent over to his pitchside monitor to take a second look and he duly pointed to the spot.

Although Kochalski guessed the right way, and got a touch to the ball, the Qarabag 'keeper could not keep out Gordon's powerful penalty. But Gordon was far from finished yet and, remarkably, the forward scored his third from the restart after he pounced on slack play from defender Kevin Medina and rounded Kochalski to make it 4-0.

There was still time for Gordon to grab his fourth from the spot just a couple of minutes before half-time after goalkeeper Kocalski took the England international down inside the box. Kochalski again guessed correctly, but it was another emphatic penalty from Gordon.

Qarabag, to their credit, rallied after the break and defender Elvin Cafarquliyev pulled one back from a tight angle. But substitute Jacob Murphy went on to score a deflected effort from distance to restore Newcastle's five-goal advantage before these sides meet in the return fixture at St James' Park.
