Alex Murphy has shared his reaction to making his debut in the Champions League during Newcastle's win against Qarabag at St. James' Park tonight.

Newcastle United cruised into the last 16 of the Champions League following another victory against Qarabag.

Eddie Howe's side already had one foot in the next round after a 6-1 rout in Azerbaijan last week. Much-changed Newcastle duly picked up from where they left off in Baku, after again racing into a two-goal lead, but this was a night where spirited Qarabag gave a much better account of themselves thereafter.

Sandro Tonali opened the scoring for Newcastle in the fourth minute after Qarabag goalkeeper Mateusz Kochalski could only parry William Osula's header into the path of the Italian, who could hardly miss to net his first ever goal in the competition.

Newcastle scored another just a couple of minutes later when Harvey Barnes drilled the ball across goal and the unmarked Joelinton fired home expertly on the volley. Qarabag could have gone under, as they did after going behind so early in the first leg, but the visitors rallied to their credit.

The Azerbaijan Premier League champions pulled one back after half-time when Camilo Duran skipped away from Dan Burn and finished clinically past Aaron Ramsdale to give the travelling support a moment to remember following a mammoth 2,500-mile journey.

Newcastle defender Sven Botman quickly restored Newcastle's seven-goal aggregate lead when he headed home from Kieran Trippier's corner kick, but Qarabag responded once again.

Qarabag were awarded a penalty after Burn handled the ball inside the box and although Ramsdale kept out Marko Jankovic's spot-kick, Elvin Cafarguliyev was quickest to react to knock in the follow up.

Bayer Leverkusen will face Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 after a second-leg goalless draw with Olympiakos secured their comfortable progress on aggregate.

Leading 2-0 from the first leg, the Bundesliga side dominated at the BayArena and almost found a breakthrough when Alejandro Grimaldo struck the crossbar midway through the second half.

But failing to score against Olympiakos for the second time this campaign did not matter for Leverkusen, as a double from forward Patrik Schick in the first leg was enough to earn the German side a place in the last 16 for only the second time since the 2016/17 season.

After easing to victory in Greece six days ago, Leverkusen picked up where they left off and took control from the first whistle.

Kasper Hjulmand's side could have been ahead within four minutes as Schick glanced a header wide after connecting with Grimaldo's cross.

From there, it was one-way traffic but the Czech international fluffed his line with an attempt to lob the onrushing Konstantinos Tzolakis when presented with another opportunity shortly after.

Bodo/Glimt

On the club's goals for the competition: "I don't know, we are not talking about goals, we talk about performance. I want to develop the players, the team, and always try to be competitive. That's the way we do it. It's the same in the next games also."

On Inter Milan: "Inter is a really good team, in the first half we are lucky. They worked hard, won duels, made a lot of crosses, but we defended well. We weren't good with the ball. We did the job, but we played against a top team."

Bodo/Glimt

Bodo/Glimt captain Patrick Berg speaking to Canal+: "Two games against Inter we performed really well. We knew it was easier for us to play at home then come to this historic stadium and play a fantastic team. But we are a small club, small team, we have nothing to lose. We want to enjoy our football and compete with the best teams and players.

"It's amazing. For the club and city it's unbelievable. I don't think people thought we could beat Man City, Atletico and now Inter two times. It's magnificent."

On whether he would prefer to face Man City or Sporting CP in the last-16: "For me it's not important. It's fun to play against new teams, so if we play Sporting and go there it would be amazing.

"But if it's City, we will gladly welcome them back to Norway. And obviously we would go there [to Manchester] to play them."

Norwegians Bodo/Glimt produced one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history as they knocked out last year's finalists Inter Milan to reach the last 16 for the first time.

Back at the San Siro where he had two difficult years at AC Milan, Jens Petter Hauge scored the opener and assisted Hakon Evjen's second goal as the visitors claimed a stunning success.

They will face either Manchester City or Sporting in the last 16.

Inter are three-time champions in the competition and currently sit 10 points clear at the top of Serie A, which made them overwhelming favourites for this knockout round play-off tie.

But Bodo, who are still in their off season in Norway, have earned themselves a reputation of producing results against the odds during their Champions League debut campaign and enjoyed another famous triumph.

Alexander Sorloth scored his first Champions League hat-trick to help Atletico Madrid defeat a resilient Club Brugge and set up a last-16 tie with either Tottenham or Liverpool.

The Norway striker opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he collected a long ball from keeper Jan Oblak and his half-volley squirmed past Simon Mignolet.

However, Brugge levelled 13 minutes later when Joel Ordonez - who scored an own goal in the first leg when the two sides drew 3-3 - headed level from a corner.

But with the tie in the balance, United States international Johnny Cardoso thrashed home a low strike three minutes into the second half to put Atleti 5-4 ahead on aggregate.

Sorloth then added gloss to the La Liga side's performance with two goals in the final 14 minutes at the Wanda Metropolitano to book a meeting with Premier League opposition in the next round.

More from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Amazon Prime on reaching the knockouts: "This was our target at the start of the season. We discussed various things and to get to the knockout stages was there for us and we felt we could achieve it with the players we have. It's been a really exciting phase of this competition. We've really enjoyed the different challenges.

"The knockout stage will be a different challenge for us at the sharp end against elite teams, so everything to look forward to. But at the back of my mind we have to get our Premier League form back to where we want it to be and that will give us the best chance to do well at this competition as well."

Former Newcastle defender John Anderson was pleased to see Alex Murphy start and Leo Shahar make a cameo appearance towards the end of the second leg with Sean Neave featuring in the first.

Newcastle on their day are capable of beating anyone. They could have performed better in the Premier League this season but when it does click, they are a threat.

The important thing was Newcastle getting here and that have got the job done. This is so exciting for Newcastle fans and there is no reason they cannot keep progressing.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Amazon Prime: "I thought at 2-0 we probably came off the pedal. We didn't intend to do that but it was sort of the natural reaction. In the second half the game became end-to-end which, for us, was a real shame. For one, we extended too much energy and it meant we didn't put pressure on their goal, so we're disappointed with that 45 minutes."

On Nick Woltemade's performance: "I think the main thing we've been saying to him is stay between the lines. Certainly don't come away from their midfield line to still be a goal threat because he's 6'7, he should still be a target from crosses. There were a few balls there that on another day he could've got on the end of because we want him to score goals. That's part of the reason we brought him here.

"I think there were moments for him but I think that was the least impact he's had in that position for us."

On whether he wants Barcelona or Chelsea: "Genuinely I haven't given it a seconds thought. I know those teams have been there for us. The main thing was to get through and really pleased with the professional job we've done. I think if you look at the score over the two legs it's been fantastic from the players even though today feels like a bit of a hollow win for us. We had really enjoyed the game against Barcelona, we had a good game against Chelsea here as well, we didn't win either, so I hope that's a good omen for us."

On the fan banner dedicated for him before the game: "Amazing. Big thank you to everyone that thought of that idea. It's much appreciated the love that the supporters give me and the team. It means everything."

This is an amazing time for Newcastle. They looked for Eddie Howe and for someone who they could keep for 10 years and take the club forward.

"We got a lot of experience from these situations last season in the Europa League, we knew it would be extremely tough today, but the clock was running in our way. We knew as long as we kept score 0-0 the space would open and we could punish them on the counter and we did that."

On his form: "It's going good at the moment, I just have to keep working every day and make sure I am ready when the next games come up. It will be difficult."

On if he would prefer to face Manchester City or Sporting CP in the last-16: "We just have to wait and see and then we will prepare."

Unsurprisingly, Bodo/Glimt forward Jens Petter Hauge was named Uefa's player of the match.

He reacted quickly to tuck home a rebound and open the scoring, before setting up Hakon Evjen's goal with a wonderful cross.

A constant threat on the break and a tireless worker off the ball.

Sporting CP, Club Brugge and Bodo have similarities in their success this season. Their scouting is great and their academies perform well.

The academies in Italy are not producing enough players or players who are fit to play in their first team. The way they spend their money is not what we are used to from Italian clubs.

Newcastle are just the third English team to score nine or more goals in a Champions League knockout stage tie, after Manchester City against Schalke in 2018-19 (10-2) and Arsenal against PSV Eindhoven last season (9-3).

I'm not very happy with the second half because we play just with the result because we scored nine goals but we had to do more because these fans deserve 100 per cent for 90 minutes every game. For me, the second half was very good but we can do 100 per cent more and we need to push every minute of the game.

"The first thing was don't concede a goal and the second half first 10 minutes we concede the first goal and it was a stupid goal. Every time we concede a goal we are not happy. But finally we are happy because we pass through in the Champions League and we deserve this one because we trained a lot for this.

"Last season we worked very tough every day, every weekend to play Champions League this season, we deserve everything."

Italian clubs are flopping but you have amazing stories with Bodo and Qarabag playing well tonight. They are great stories - so it is ying and yang. It is really important for a team like Bodo to make the last 16.
