    Inter v Bodo/Glimt (20:00, 1-3 agg)

We could have an all-timer of a Champions League upset on our hands at San Siro this evening.

Bodo/Glimt arrive in Milan with a 3-1 aggregate lead after their shock 3-1 victory against Inter in the first leg last week.

Thought the Norwegian side's 3-1 win against Manchester City last month was the greatest shock in Champions League history?

Think again - Inter are runaway leaders in Serie A, are the three-time European champions and reached last season's final.

  3. Woltemade's versatility not harming his World Cup chances - Howepublished at 19:50 GMT 24 February

    Newcastle v Qarabag (20:00, 6-1 agg)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is confident striker Nick Woltemade’s World Cup dream will not be ruined by his deployment in midfield.

The 24-year-old Germany international, the Magpies’ £69m record signing, was recruited as a striker along with Yoane Wissa as the club looked to replace Alexander Isak last summer, but has lined up in a significantly deeper role in recent weeks in the absence of the injured Bruno Guimaraes and Lewis Miley.

He could be asked to fill a midfield role once again in tonight’s Champions League play-off, second leg against Qarabag, but head coach Howe is not expecting a concerned call from Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann about his number nine as he prepares to select his squad for the World Cup finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Howe said: “Not necessarily because I think the role is not dissimilar to how Germany have used him anyway. If they’ve played him as a nine, they’ve asked him to come into lower positions, so I don’t think it’s a big change.

“I’m sure their manager will look at it and go ‘if he’s doing well for Newcastle and he’s playing minutes, then that’s only going to help his cause’.

“They know what he can do, obviously coming through the youth system there, so I think they’ll have no doubts about his strengths and what he can offer the national team.”

In recent weeks Inter Milan have taken control of the Serie A title race and established a 10 point advantage at the top. In Europe though, their form has nose-dived.

Inter won their first four games in the Champions League under Christian Chivu, who replaced Simone Inzaghi as manager last summer.

But since then the they have lost four of the past five, winning just once. Those defeats came at home to Liverpool and Arsenal, and away to Atletico Madrid and Bodo/Glimt.

Of managers with five or more games in charge of Inter in the competition, Chivu now has the highest loss percentage (44%).

Bodo/Glimt sneaked into the Champions League play-off round by finishing 23rd in the league phase table.

The Norwegian side failed to win any of their opening six games, before producing remarkable wins at home to Manchester City and away at Atletico Madrid.

After beating Inter in the first leg of their play-off tie last week, Bodo are looking to win a fourth Champions League game in a row.

If they do they, they will become the first team from outside of Europe’s big five leagues to win four consecutive games in a European Cup/Champions League campaign against opponents from those leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy & France) since Ajax in 1971-72.

  8. How seven Premier League clubs could qualify for the Champions Leaguepublished at 19:36 GMT 24 February

    Ask Me Anything

As many as seven different English clubs could qualify for the league phase of next season's Champions League.

The top four clubs in this season's Premier League are already guaranteed to earn a spot in the 2026-27 competition, but England is on course to earn an additional spot.

That is because the best-performing two nations in each season's European club competitions are awarded an extra place in the following season's Champions League.

As things stand, England is comfortably the best-performing nation ahead of Germany, Portugal, Spain and Italy, and nigh-on guaranteed an additional place.

With six clubs still in this season's tournament, there is a strong chance that an English club could go on to lift the trophy.

Should that happen, the winner of the Champions League would guarantee themselves a spot again next campaign.

If the winner has already qualified for next season's Champions League in their domestic league, that country will not get an extra spot.

But as it stands, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham are all situated outside the top five, so if they win the European title in May, they would get to defend the trophy regardless of where they finish in the Premier League.

On top of that, the winner of the Europa League is also awarded a place in the Champions League, with Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest still in that competition.

Newcastle have come a long way since being taken over and they're doing it in style really. The performance last week was absolutely special and it allows them to go into this one with a bit more of a relaxed state.

I'm sure the fans will be buzzing and be able to enjoy it a lot more than the team are usually getting themselves into.

Being able to give the young boy, Alex Murphy, a competitive start and I'm sure Neave, the striker, will get a lot of minutes as well. It's a fantastic opportunity for them.

It should be a great evening for the team but they'll be really focused on a good performance and getting into this team for the next fixtures. I think everyone's been given an opportunity to be the ones to get on the pitch for the last 16.

  10. 'We're heading in the right direction'published at 19:32 GMT 24 February

    Newcastle v Qarabag (20:00, 6-1 agg)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle had beaten Tottenham in the league, Aston Villa in the FA Cup and Qarabag in the Champions League in their last three outings before losing 2-1 to Manchester City at the weekend.

But Saturday’s defeat was their fourth in five Premier League games, leaving them mid-table domestically.

Manager Eddie Howe said: “This season has been a challenge in so many ways. There are no excuses for that but the league table isn’t what we wanted it to be. But you always have to give context to every situation and our league position isn’t based on this result.

“I thought this and the last three games have been a big upturn in terms of performance, physicality, identity, quality of play.

“I think we’re heading in the right direction, hopefully, and I think that’s the most important thing and then you know long-term we’re going to be fine.”

Olympiacos will have to produce something special if they are to advance to the last-16.

Of the 191 instances of a team losing by two or more goals at home in the first leg of a knockout stage tie in the European Cup/Champions League, only two have managed to progress following the second leg.

They were Manchester United against Paris Saint-Germain in 2018-19 (last-16, 3-3 on aggregate) and Ajax versus Benfica in 1968-69 (quarter-finals, 4-4 on aggregate).

Jose Luis Mendilibar's side have their work cut out.

Bodo/Glimt have got a fascinating story, haven't they. Their last three results, they've beaten Manchester City, they've beaten Atletico Madrid in their own back yard and then beating Inter 3-1, so they've got that two-goal lead going over to Milan.

That's a sensational game and I really wouldn't put it past them going through. They're a tremendously organised outfit and I think Inter have got their work cut out.

I hope Bodo go through. I probably shouldn't say that, but I do.

    San SiroImage source, Getty Images

There have been some extraordinary European nights at the San Siro over the years, but Inter are going to need another if they are to progress to round of 16.

The last team to qualify from a two-legged Champions League knock-out tie after a two-plus goal defeat in the first leg away from home was Liverpool in 2018-19 (v Barcelona in the semi-finals, won 4-3 on aggregate).

11 other teams have found themselves in that scenario but failed to progress since Liverpool.

Inter have only won by two or more goals in six of their 52 matches in the knockout stages in the Champions League and have never won a game by three or more goals in the knockouts.

  17. Who will Newcastle face (probably) in the last 16?published at 19:13 GMT 24 February

    Newcastle v Qarabag (20:00, 6-1 agg)

Barring one of the worst capitulations in the history of football, Newcastle will have a tie against either Chelsea or Barcelona in the last 16.

Each of the other five English sides left in the tournament have four potential opponents, which will be cut down to two by the end of tomorrow, before Friday's draw.

Sixteen teams will discover their opponents in the Champions League knockout draw on Friday at 11:00 GMT.

The eight winners of the two-legged knockout phase play-offs join the top eight sides from the league-phase table in the draw.

Friday's draw will also allocate a side of the bracket for all teams, meaning they will know who they could potentially meet in the quarter-final, semi-final and final.

The eight winners of the play-offs will meet the top-eight finishers from the league phase.

From this point onward the competition adopts a knockout format, with each fixture other than the final contested over two legs.

As with the play-offs, teams' final ranking in the league phase will influence seeding in the last 16, with seeded sides - those that finished in the top eight of the league - being given the advantage of playing second legs at home.

Teams who finished first to fourth at the end of the league phase are seeded for the quarter-finals, and therefore given the home advantage in their quarter-final tie second legs.

The two sides, Arsenal and Bayern Munich, who finished top and runner-up in the league are also seeded for the semi-finals, earning them the benefit of playing the second leg of their semis at home should they reach that stage.

If a seeded team does not progress to the quarter or semi-finals, the team that knocks them out will inherit their seeding position.

For winger Jacob Murphy, who made his 250th appearance for Newcastle, the club he supported as a boy in Saturday night’s Premier League defeat at Manchester City, the sound of the Champions League anthem ringing out at St James’ Park will make him feel “like a kid” once again.

The 30-year-old, who was pictured singing along with a broad grin on his face as the club made their return to the competition at AC Milan two seasons ago, said: "When the anthem goes, I’m like all the fans in the stadium when it goes, ‘the champions’. I always belt that out at the end with the rest of the crowd.

“It’s those moments I never take for granted. If you’re not feeling like a kid still in those moments.

“Yes, I’m still very serious about my work, but at the end of the day we do the best job in the world and I always feel that excitement, that child-like feeling when it comes to playing in such big moments and big games.”
