A rampant Middlesbrough cut the gap to leaders Coventry to three points as they dismantle a Preston side who did all they could to help them with some poor defending.

Alan Browne and Tommy Conway had put Boro two goals in front before Lewis Gibson fell asleep at the back and had his pocket picked by former Plymouth team-mate Morgan Whittaker for a third just before the break.

Whatever was said at the interval in the Preston changing room went out of the window as Jordan Storey was caught in possession by Conway and hauled him to the ground to earn a red card.

Conway helped himself to a second as Jack Walton parried Leo Castledine's free kick into his path.

It could have been worse for the woeful visitors who suffer a third successive league defeat without scoring and their top-six tenure may well come to an end later this afternoon.

    What a mess!

Camiel Neghli and Femi Azeez have a bit of a disagreement over who is going to take the penalty but the number 10 wins out - and sees a tame penalty saved!

He puts the ball back across and it pingpongs in off Luke Cundle.

I think his forearm goes into his head, it does not get any better on second viewing.

I do not know how much intent there was, it will be just a yellow card.

There is a little bit of blood there, take him off, do not risk anything.

  20. Preston 'have offered nothing going forward'published at 13:59 GMT 24 January

    Middlesbrough 4-0 Preston

    Neil Maddison
Former Middlesbrough midfielder on BBC Tees

Preston have lacked quality in forward areas.

I know their centre forward got sent off the other week and they are missing him, but still they have offered nothing going forward.

He will have missed 20 games in total through suspension mind, that violent conduct, he was absolutely stupid.
