  2. England's round of 32 opponents - as it standspublished at 08:05 BST 24 June

    England 0-0 Ghana

This is by no means a sure thing but, as it stands, the Three Lions are on course to take on a third-placed team in the next round of the competition.

We've built a tool which projects England's route through the tournament - and that of every other team in the competition.

And at the moment it looks like England could face 63rd-ranked Cape Verde in the round of 32.

Famed for its population of around 500,000, Cape Verde performed admirably in draws with Uruguay and Spain - with a notably stubborn defence in the latter.

Given how England fared against a resolute defence last night, this projected encounter with Cape Verde may not be such a tonic - but again, there are far sterner sides that could await England in the next round.

It's a startling statistic, that, and enough to put the frighteners in a good portion of England fans this morning.

We've already had a message in saying it's time for England to pack their bags - and it's not even 8am.

In a moment, we're going to take the temperature of our audience and see just how many of you are doom and gloom and who is looking on the bright side.

First, though, for balance - a couple of heartening sights.

Let's remind ourselves of where England sit in the table - and who they could face next.

We left the creativity at home. Someone who could unlock a low block defence - unless you were a 6ft something strong athlete then you need not apply. Very lucky not to concede the stonewall penalty. Bad night for England.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel claimed England's thrilling opening World Cup win against Croatia would have excited "fans in pubs". The dismal follow-up against Ghana would have sobered them up instantly.

The manner in which England dismantled Croatia raised expectation and excitement levels, but this was a brutal reality check as Ghana's resilience, physicality and organisation built an insurmountable barrier.

England are leading Group L and set to qualify for the last 32 - and Declan Rice echoed the post-match mood of "no panic" in the camp when he told BBC Sport: "We still have a great chance to top the group against Panama, so positivity all round."

Not quite all round given the Three Lions' lack of creativity in the face of Ghana's durability - but Tuchel's side still remain in a healthy position.

If the victory against Croatia made watching England fun, this was back to the grindstone where they were forced to do the dirty work, but could not break through.
