"Second game fever with England, isn't it?" he said.

"Win the first one and draw the second. It's OK.

"I think [Ghana] played for a draw, which would have seen them go through.

"Fair play to them. They did a great job."

Tuesday's match was England's 23rd draw in World Cup history.

Thirteen of those draws, including last night's, were goalless.

No nation has more 0-0 draws at the World Cup than the Three Lions.

After Tuesday's underwhelming performance, you wouldn't be blamed for being less optimistic about England's chances of winning the World Cup - but what do the folks at Opta think about the Three Lions' chances?

Opta's supercomputer, which gives every team in the World Cup a percentage chance of winning the tournament, say England now have a 9.5% chance of bringing the trophy home for the first time in 60 years.

For context, their pre-tournament odds for England were higher at 11.6%.

England were Opta's third favourite to win the World Cup before a ball was kicked, sitting below Spain and France. Now Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, have leapfrogged England, France and Spain to become their favourite to become champion.

    Can England defy the odds?

Five years ago, England drew 0-0 with Scotland in the second group game of Euro 2020, and the reaction was virtually the same as now. England made the final and almost won the tournament. There is a long way to go.

Lots of sideways passing and trying to play around Ghana. It seemed no one was willing to try the difficult pass to cut through them or play them in behind. Scared of the counter attack maybe. I do think Gordon and Madueke have had their chance though. Saka and Rashford to come in.

It is a long tournament and there are some very, very organised teams. At this level you are not going to get it all your own way and go out and put in a sparkling performance in every game. You are going to be asked different questions and England struggled to find the answers tonight against Ghana.

They were too slow. They didn't offer enough, particularly in wide positions. We hit the first man too many times when we did try to cross the ball. Everything was just too passive and safe, the easy option.

Rather than taking the gamble to pass into midfield or the gamble to take someone on one v one, too many times we went back inside. It was too slow and they didn't do enough to win the game.

  14. 'England could have done with someone like Alexander-Arnold'published at 08:52 BST 24 June

    England 0-0 Ghana

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Tuchel could have given Carlos and the team ranked 64th in the world and their amazing fans a little bit more credit and acknowledge that one of the biggest chances was actually in their favour.

I thought Rashford was going to come on at half-time because Gordon was struggling and I was very surprised that Djed Spence started but if he was in there to play against Semenyo, Semenyo was then going to play on the other side - which seems like bad planning.

England could have done with a game changer, like Trent-Alexander Arnold.

If England start O'Reilly against Panama and you've got Rashford and bring Saka in on the right those three changes alone will improve England.

  17. 'It's part of Tuchel's plan'published at 08:32 BST 24 June

    England 0-0 Ghana

    David James
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

There was so much about this game on the back of the second half [against Croatia], there was a lot of expectation.

What I've liked about Tuchel is that I think it's part of a plan. 0-0 is fine, we got a clean sheet. A draw is good enough and the changes would have been made for the right reasons.

It's frustrating because everyone wants to see a great game of football, but in the end we'll forget about this game because after the Panama victory we'll be in to the knockouts and achieved what we needed to do.

I can't criticise the timing of substitutes or anything. We created the most chances and the goalkeeper played well. We did everything we needed to do, bar winning.

'Frustrated' was certainly a theme of the game last night.

Never more so than in the 86th minute, when Harry Kane and Nico O'Reilly were frustrated in quick succession - by a header against the woodwork and then a chance to volley it in which hit row z.

But how does Thomas Tuchel see it? Is the manager frustrated?

Frustrating as it was to watch, last night’s game may prove to be a good thing. No injuries, red cards, clean sheet, but more importantly, it will keep the team and fans grounded in reality. The real test is the knock out stage. And don’t ignore, Ghana deserved a point.
