Luka Modric, who has won six Champions League titles with Real Madrid and a Ballon d'Or, is Croatia's most successful ever footballer.

He captained Croatia to a World Cup final in 2018, third place four years ago and, aged 40, earned his 200th cap for Croatia against Panama last night.

He is the fourth man to play 200 international games, after Cristiano Ronaldo (230), Bader Ahmed Al-Mutawa (202) and Lionel Messi (201).

Croatia remain in contention for a last-32 spot at the World Cup after beating Panama in Toronto to register their first points in Group L.

A win on Saturday against Ghana, who earlier drew 0-0 with England, will confirm Croatia's place in the knockout phase.

Substitute Ante Budimir's goal nine minutes into the second half eliminated England's final group opponents Panama, who have lost their first two matches.

Panama's pace in attack had caused problems for the 2018 runners-up during a goalless first period, and Croatia boss Zlatko Dalic reacted to his side's disappointing first-half display by making two attacking changes at the break.

One of those paid off almost immediately as Osasuna forward Budimir calmly turned in Josip Stanisic's low cross at the far post.

That goal ensured Croatia captain Luka Modric's 200th international appearance ended in victory.

The 40-year-old, who was replaced after 81 minutes, is the fourth male player to reach that milestone as he features in his fifth World Cup.

The midfielder, who was lifted into the air by his teammates at the end, completed 88% of his passes, meaning he has completed 80% or more of his passes in all 19 World Cup appearances he has made.

Dalic said: "He is still influencing matches and to play for your country 200 times, that is a lot. We need to be very happy to have him in the team.

"Luka is very humble and this is why he is not for major celebrations. But I am very glad we marked this today in front of our fans."

Panama had chances to equalise and potentially extend their World Cup stay, but were thwarted by Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, who made a series of saves in one frantic spell just before the second-half hydration break.

Luis Diaz is the first player to be caught offside five times in a World Cup match since Robin van Persie (6) in 2014 vs Costa Rica.

One of those offiside calls came when he put the ball in the net in the 81st minute.

DR Congo superfan Michel Kuka Mboladinga, better known as Lumumba Vea or the 'living statue', was spotted for the first time at the World Cup

He has received plenty of recognition both at home and globally due to his iconic ability to imitate a statue for the duration of a match involving his team and his distinctive look.

Mboladinga has been pictured completely still for the duration of matches, with one arm raised. While doing so, he wears a jacket, shirt, tie and suit trousers, often recreating the colours of the DR Congo flag.

The stance recreates that of the Lumumba statue housed in the city of Kinshasa, DR Congo's capital.

The statue is in tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the first prime minister of the First Congolese Republic in 1960 - hence Mboladinga's 'Lumumba Vea' nickname.

DR Congo's superfan has been attending games in the manner he does since 2013, but became famous more recently during the Africa Cup of Nations across December 2025 and January 2026.

Unable to attend their opening World Cup match due to a mandatory quarantine because of DR Congo's Ebola outbreak, Mboladinga there to see his beloved Leopards take on Colombia in Guadalajara.

Daniel Munoz's goal in this morning's match between Colombia and Congo DR was the sixth goal scored by a Crystal Palace player at the World Cup.

Munoz, Japan's Daichi Kamada and Ismaila Sarr of Senegal have scored two goals each so far in the tournament.

Real Madrid are the only club whose players have scored more goals than Crystal Palace (seven).

Daniel Munoz's deflected strike was enough for Colombia to beat DR Congo and secure their place in the World Cup knockout stage.

Roared on by the vast majority of the crowd in Guadalajara, Colombia missed a host of chances before Crystal Palace wing-back Munoz broke the deadlock in the 76th minute.

Juan Fernando Quintero's clever pass found its way to Munoz and his left-footed shot took a touch off the defender to wrong-foot DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi and sneak in at the near post.

A second straight win puts Colombia top of Group K and clinches their place in the last 32, while DR Congo are third and need to beat Uzbekistan in their last group game to have any chance of progressing.

Match-winner Munoz was a threat throughout and should have put Colombia ahead inside four minutes, but put his close-range shot into the side netting after Jhon Arias' shot had been parried into his path.

Two minutes later, Munoz did bundle the ball into the net after his initial header was saved but, while it was very tight, he was just offside.

Colombia continued were dominant during a relentless opening 20 minutes but could not find a way past Mpasi.

They remained on top after half-time and Luis Diaz should have put them in front on 50 minutes, but could not find the net with just Mpasi to beat, while Arias dragged the follow-up wide.

But just as it seemed it would be a night of frustration for Colombia, Quintero slid the ball into Munoz's path and he beat Mpasi.

DR Congo pushed for a leveller late on but Colombia held on for a deserved victory.

No hate to Uzbekistan but they aren't an especially strong side so why are we acting like Ronaldo is back to his peak after one game? He is just not that good anymore and it's hindering Portugal's future.

My opinion on Ronaldo - if Kane said he's fit for England at the 2034 World Cup, I'd tell him to stay at home.

It was a long afternoon for Uzbekistan and the one bit of joy they had was wiped out in a flash.

After Portugal made it 2-0 in the 17th minute, Uzbekistan thought they had a wonderful reply as Aziz G'aniev spectacularly shot into the net.

However, the effort was ruled out because Abbosbek Fayzullaev had fouled Cancelo.
