The ball is perfect for Jamille Matt - a striker who loves the FA Cup.

He will be thinking how didn't that go in.

It's a good start for Walsall.

  9. CLOSE!published at 15:38 GMT 7 December 2025

    Gateshead 0-0 Walsall

First shot for the visitors and Daniel Kanu hits a left foot strike but it's straight down the throat of Gateshead keeper Tiernan Brooks.

Moments later, Ryan Finnigan gets all the way to the byeline but somehow Jamille Matt fluffs his lines at the vital moment. Matt should have scored.

    Boreham Wood 2-0 Newport County

    Paul Robinson
Former Leeds and England keeper on BBC Two

Newport have been careless in possession. If you give the ball to Boreham Wood, it may be some time before you get it back.

However, the visitors are pressing far higher up the pitch in this half but they are struggling to get going.

Boreham Wood's Regan Booty has another opportunity.

The visitors can hardly keep hold of the ball.

I'm surprised there's been no changes at half-time for Newport. I don't think Newport have been terrible, but you can see where the game is going.

We have one team full of confidence in their league facing a team rock bottom of theirs.

League Two leaders Walsall travel to a wet and windy Gateshead this afternoon looking to avoid what would be one of the big shocks of this weekend's FA Cup action.

The Saddlers have progressed from each of their past five FA Cup ties against non-league opponents, since a 1-0 defeat by Macclesfield Town nine years ago.

National League side Gateshead, meanwhile, are looking to reach the third round for just the second time in their history.

They did, however, see off League One side AFC Wimbledon last month, putting aside the 57 places in the football pyramid between them, to pull off one of the shocks of the first round in a 2-0 away win.

Can the Heed pull off similar heroics today? Kick-off in our third of four FA Cup clashes coming up in just a couple of minutes.

HT: Boreham Wood 2-0 Newport County

    Mark O'Brien
Former Newport County defender on BBC Radio Wales

I think Christian Fuchs is going to have to make changes at half-time, whether that's shape wise or personnel.

There are chances to be had for Newport, but what they can't afford to do is allow this Boreham Wood side to build on the momentum they have.
