Great noise inside Anfield as the PSV fans begin to swing their scarves around their heads and jump up and down.

They know they've got a real chance here tonight.

The Tottenham squad for me is heavily overbalanced with wide attacking players or attacking midfielders that can play in the three behind the striker. But if Dominic Solanke is injured, we have seen that they don't have an answer. Randal Kolo Muani has not been given a chance, Richarlison has not stepped up to the level.

I've just watched 17-year-old Lennart Karl leave the pitch like he hasn't got a care in the world.

He was the last one to walk off out of all the Bayern Munich players. He was strolling, his shirt was hanging out a little bit, his socks were rolled down. He looks as cool as you like, but he is about to step onto the top stage that you can at club-level.

He has a phenomenal mentality for his age.

Homegrown players were a relatively rare sight on Paris St-Germain team sheets until a few years ago.

With the notable exceptions of Mamadou Sakho, Presnel Kimpembe and Adrien Rabiot, the early years of the club's Qatari ownership were spearheaded by high-profile signings from elsewhere.

Some of PSG's most notable academy products in that period, including Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, found themselves moving on before having time to make any kind of mark in the French capital.

The club's turn towards French talent in recent seasons, and the end of the so-called "bling-bling" era, has already seen the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue spearhead last year's treble-winning campaign.

Now, PSG are looking to go one further and build around their own homegrown talent, a shift which has been precipitated by an early-season injury crisis.

With Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the long-term absentees, there have been as many as five academy graduates - all from the Paris area - on the team sheet this season.

  7. 'Back threes have caused PSG problems'published at 19:54 GMT 26 November 2025

    PSG v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

    Statman Dave
Football analyst on BBC Radio 5 Live

On Frank's decision to return to a back three against PSG:

Looking at PSG they have struggled against back threes so far in Ligue 1 this season, it's caused them problems. They lost 1-0 to Marseille when Marseille played a back three, they drew 3-3 with Strasbourg, again against a back three - both of those teams play with real intensity and squeeze you high.

You look at Spurs' best performance of the season against Man City and they won the ball six times in City's defensive third. That is definitely going to be the approach today.

    PSG v Tottenham (20:00 GMT)

    Paul Robinson

I am surprised by Frank's team selection. I understand why he has done it, this is the way that they set up for the Super Cup in pre-season, granted they nearly got a result but PSG only had a week's training before that game.

I have spoken to a lot of Spurs fans here and they are amazed that Frank has gone with a back five again. Set up your team and go and have a go, and if you are going to lose, have a go losing.

    Phil McNulty

Virage Auteuil, where the PSG "Ultras" gather at Parc des Princes, is already a wall of sound ahead of the Champions League meeting with Spurs.

PSG picked off a succession of the Premier League's big names on the way to winning the Champions League last season, namely Manchester City, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal.

    Can Spurs alter that pattern?

  10. 'I fully expect Liverpool to win'published at 19:51 GMT 26 November 2025

    Liverpool v PSV (20:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I fully expect Liverpool to win tonight. I anticipate Arne Slot's side will win comfortably because I don't think PSV will cause them too many problems.

If they do, that's when the alarm bells will start ringing for everyone.

My biggest concern from a Liverpool point of view is West Ham United away this weekend. They have to go there and get a result.

The next 3 games are do or die for Slot. Losing to PSV tonight (his native country’s team who he should know a lot about) and then losing (or even drawing) against West Ham & Sunderland will be enough for the board to say goodbye to Slot. By that point they could be sitting 16th place in the league with the (expensive) squad they have. He has to win all 3 of those games to keep his job.

  12. 'Arteta's teamsheet shows strength'published at 19:50 GMT 26 November 2025

Arsenal v Bayern Munich (20:00 GMT)

    Matt Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live at Emirates Stadium

The first thing I thought when I saw Mikel Arteta's teamsheet was that it shows strength.

Their bench is full of names of players who you would assume would be playing, such as Ben White, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Ethan Nwaneri, Noni Madueke and Riccardo Calafiori.

He has a combination of players who could step into a lot of teams and aren't out in the cold to bring off the bench. That's the beauty of the squad they assembled this summer.

I am sure Harry Kane is delighted to be back home. Everyone questioned it when he went out there. I think everyone has been blown away. Just look at his numbers. He thrives on the big stage and he will want to score - and most importantly win.

Liverpool's 3-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday was a new low for the Premier League champions this season.

For £125m striker Alexander Isak, it was another game on the periphery. If he's to make an impact tonight, he'll have to do it from off the bench.

Only Wolves have earned fewer Premier League points than Liverpool over the past seven games but the Reds can at least take encouragement from their formidable recent home form in the Champions League.

They have won each of their past 13 games at Anfield in either the league or group stage of the competition. That is a record for a Premier League club and the longest such run currently ongoing in Europe, ahead of Arsenal (nine wins), Bayern Munich and Inter Milan (both six victories).

The Merseysiders' most reason home defeat in the opening phase was against Atalanta exactly five years ago, back when Covid restrictions meant no fans could attend, taking the Anfield atmosphere out of the equation.

However, this sequence does not include knockout ties and it is worth recalling eventual winners Paris St-Germain beat Liverpool on their own patch in last season's quarter-finals.

And, given the domestic struggles of Arne Slot's side, it is not entirely unthinkable that PSV could follow in the footsteps of PSG and claim their first win in England since 2008.

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's a place I know so it's good to be here. We want to win. This is such an opportunity to make a step towards direct qualification [to the last 16]."

On whether Arsenal and Bayern Munich are the two best teams in Europe right now: "At the moment, with the best results. It matters who is the best in March or April."

On if it is inevitable that Harry Kane scores tonight: "It's never inevitable. He has to work for every goal he scores. The Harry I have been able to know is a player who is actually happy for others than himself to score."

    Liverpool v PSV (20:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The issue in the midfield area more than anything at the moment for Liverpool. At the moment Gravenberch will often get the ball and run beyond Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, and then it leaves them light at the back.

It's decision making. It's about Mac Allister and Szoboszlai recognising that Gravenberch has run beyond and being the person to fill in, but those two are not that way inclined.
