    St Mirren 0-2 Motherwell

So close to a third for Motherwell.

Tawanda Maswanhise is found be a low cross into the penalty box, but the forward this time slices it into the near-post side netting.

  2. Well like no other Scottish team?published at 20:07 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren 0-2 Motherwell

    John Rankin
Former Hibernian & Dundee United midfielder on BBC Sportsound

Motherwell's play is brilliant. The way they are getting into the forward areas and causing St Mirren umpteen problems is great to watch.

They're brave, going man-for-man and there's a real passion to win the ball back.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Scottish team play with this enthusiasm with and without the ball.

  3. 'George has to get contact on the ball'published at 20:03 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren 0-2 Motherwell

    Leanne Crichton
Former Scotland international on BBC Sportsound

Maswanhise knows exactly what he's doing. The only thing he can do is get a touch on the ball because he's not going towards goal.

I think Shamal George is between a rock and a hard place because he's committed to it early on, but you can't come out and not get contact on the ball.

  4. goal

GOAL St Mirren 0-2 MOTHERWELLpublished at 29mins

    Tawanda Maswanhise

It is a penalty after all - and Tawanda Maswanhise makes no mistake from the spot!

The forward won the spot kick himself - and the Zimbabwe forward slots home his 19th goal of the season.

  5. PENALTY TO MOTHERWELLpublished at 27mins

    St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

Elijah Just finds Tawanda Maswanhise breaking into the penalty box with a fine through ball.

Goalkeeper Shamal George brings down the inrushing forward, but there is a check for offside.

    It certainly looks tight.

  7. Well good at both sides of gamepublished at 19:56 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

    John Rankin
Former Hibernian & Dundee United midfielder on BBC Sportsound

Motherwell in possession of the ball are a joy to watch. But, when they lose it, the press is great.

  8. 'St Mirren are allowing Motherwell space'published at 19:55 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

    Leanne Crichton
Former Scotland international on BBC Sportsound

I just look at St Mirren without the ball and Jake Young is up there on his own. They aren't even pressing as a one and are allowing Motherwell to go and break that first line.

Motherwell are dominating as if they have an extra player. If you take a forward player out of the press, you're already a man down. And Motherwell are so good at exploiting space.

  9. Postpublished at 21mins

    St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

After all that, St Mirren have a chance to equalise.

A low ball to the front post from Richard King forces Stephen O'Donnell into a fine clearance with Jake Young lurking.

  10. Buddies switch not workingpublished at 21mins

    St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

BBC pundit John Rankin thinks St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson has tried to be too clever here.

He has changed from a three-man defence to a four to counter Motherwell's style, but it's not working.

However, he suggests that St Mirren's problem is that they are not pressing well enough.and Motherwell look like they have an extra man.

  11. 'Motherwell are relentless'published at 19:48 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren 0-1 Motherwell

    John Rankin
Former Hibernian & Dundee United midfielder on BBC Sportsound

It's exactly as you would think from a Motherwell side. They get down the left-hand side, ball gets into the box and is cleared, it comes down the right hand side, crossed into the box and cleared.

They are relentless. They keep the ball alive and with one or two passes they are at the edge of the box.

It's a great finish, but it has been coming.

  12. goal

GOAL St Mirren 0-1 MOTHERWELLpublished at 13mins

    Elijah Just

    It has been coming!

The ball is bobbling about the St Mirren penalty box.

Block after block is put in by the home defence, but when Elijah Just has a sight at goal, the New Zealand winger's low drive finds the far corner.

Just's sixth goal of the season.

  13. Postpublished at 11mins

    St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell

Another Motherwell corner, another St Mirren break.

Conor McMenamin looks slightly offside, but play goes on and his low drive is straight at goalkeeper Calum Ward.

  14. Postpublished at 9mins

    St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell

First corner of the game goes to Motherwell.

But St Mirren break clear and Roland Idowu's pass just fails to find Conor McMenamin breaking unmarked through the centre of the visiting defence.

  15. Postpublished at 8mins

    St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell

It's been a lively start from both sides.

The players probably need to keep moving to prevent frost bite on a cold rainy evening in Renfrewshire.

  16. Postpublished at 3mins

    St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell

    Both sides threaten early.

Home forward Conor McMenamin forces Motherwell goalkeeper Calum Ward into a parried save from a difficult angle.

At the other end, Emmanuel Longelo's dangerous cross finds the toe of Tawanda Maswanhise, but the in-form forward can only direct it wide of the far post from the edge of the six-yard box.

  19. 'We can't take good performances for granted'published at 19:29 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren v Motherwell (19.30)

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou tells BBC Scotland: "All the games we’ve played against them have been lively and intense and we expect the same tonight.

"We need to be on top of them and give them very little time to set up their direct play and overload on the last line. We need to stop their ability to get the ball forward and have numbers around for the second ball.

"And we need to be extremely good on the ball.

"Of course, we know we are in a good place as a football club and we’re still building and improving. That’s the main thing, that we keep developing and sharpening up because that’s going to be so important at this stage of the season that we’re on an upward spiral.

"We try not to speculate too much because we can get ahead of ourselves and you can take for granted a top performance. We can’t do that."

  20. Low-scoring expectationpublished at 19:27 GMT 21 February

    St Mirren v Motherwell (19:30)

Goals could be at a premium this evening.

St Mirren have kept a clean sheet in four of their latest five, while Motherwell have kept 11 clean sheets and conceded just three goals in their last 14 league games

That is the fewest goals conceded over a run of 14 games by any side in the Premiership since Rangers also let in just three in 14 from October 2020 to January 2021.

Not only that, but Motherwell (40 goals, 18 conceded) and St Mirren (21 goals, 37 conceded) have seen fewer goals in their Premiership games this season than any other sides, both in total (58) and as a per-game average (2.23).

Let's hope they both buck that trend!
