Newcastle only know one way and that's to attack. Barcelona will have possession for a lot of the game but Newcastle just need to keep the discipline and throw the punches. I think it will worry Barcelona that they do have a lot of pace and a strong counterattack.

Barcelona have progressed in 10 of their 15 previous two-legged Champions League ties against English clubs.

When drawing the first leg away from home, Barcelona have progressed from each of their last 10 UEFA Champions League knockout stage ties. They were last eliminated at the quarter-final stage in 2002-03 against Juventus

But Newcastle are unbeaten in their last six Champions League games (W3 D3), and are looking to win consecutive away games in the competition for the first time.

Newcastle United supporters are certainly enjoying themselves at the Nou Camp.

“Is this the way to Barcelona?” the away end sing up in the gods. “Bayern Munich, Lazio, Roma? Champions League awaits for me.”

They certainly don't want this journey to end.

Barcelona supporters, meanwhile, have given the visitors a typical welcome after loudly whistling the Newcastle players off the pitch after they finished their warm-up.

It should be a cracking atmosphere come kick-off.

Barcelona still decent in Spain... but a pale shadow of their great teams... still beatable by Newcastle... a big ask... but they are just not as good as they once were.

    Barcelona v Newcastle (agg 1-1, 17:45 GMT)

Former Newcastle defender Steve Howey hopes Kieran Trippier remains at the club beyond his current contract which expires this summer.

After the right-back was asked about his future in the pre-match press conference ahead of Barcelona, Howey said: "The lad is still in great shape, obviously looks after himself very well."

"It's just what he wants to do. Does he want to play all the time or is he quite happy with coming in now and again and being part of it that way but also playing a major part behind the scenes? That's up to Kieran."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports: "We are aware that they could tweak a thing or two, especially at the back, and could play different players. Both teams have been pretty consistent with their teams though. We know what to expect. We know we need to be at our absolute best to qualify. Lets go and deliver."

  11. 'Having Livramento back is a big plus'published at 17:26 GMT 18 March

    Barcelona v Newcastle (agg 1-1, 17:45 GMT)

Newcastle right-back Tino Livramento returned to Premier League action against former club Chelsea on Saturday after recent injury struggles, and ex-Magpies defender John Anderson has been discussing the importance of having him back.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, he said: "Having Livramento back is a big plus. Especially with [Barcelona] in mind.

"That is not taking away from anything Kieran Trippier has done. At 35, to play the games he has done and the standard he is at, week in and week out, is all credit to him. But Livramento just gives you that something [extra].

"He has the pace, he is good going forwards, is excellent one-v-one as well. There is not many that get the better of him.

"It was good for Eddie Howe that he made the changes [against Chelsea] and the players he brought in didn't let him down."

  13. Trippier 'not thinking' about contractpublished at 17:20 GMT 18 March

    Barcelona v Newcastle (agg 1-1, 17:45 GMT)

Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier's contract is up at the end of the season but the 35-year-old says he's not thinking about that as his side prepare for a massive game in the Champions League.

"My contract is up at the end of the season. When I first arrived, I said in my first interview, if I could help the club get to where they want to be, I've done my job," he said in a news conference on Tuesday.

This could be Trippier's last hurrah wearing black and white in Europe but instead of fretting about his contract, boss Eddie Howe says he's been helping to guide the younger players with his extensive knowledge of the Spanish league.

The former Atletico Madrid defender could prove invaluable this evening if Newcastle are to progress.

  14. Atletico boss Simeone praises Spurs captain Romeropublished at 17:16 GMT 18 March

Tottenham v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT, 2-5 agg)

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has revealed he is a “big fan” of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero ahead of the Champions League last-16 second leg in London.

Romero was heavily linked with a transfer to Atletico last summer to join up with fellow Argentinian Simeone, but no move materialised and he subsequently signed a new contract at Spurs until the end of the 2028-29 campaign.

Tottenham’s disastrous season along with Romero’s own mixed form of two reds cards sandwiched between six goals has meant speculation about his future rumbles on, which led to Simeone being asked about his compatriot in Tuesday’s mews conference.

“I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball,” Simeone explained.

“As a fan of Argentina, I have seen him play more games for the national team than I have for Spurs, but I’m a big fan of him, for sure.”

  15. Nonsense to say Spurs players don't care - Van de Venpublished at 17:11 GMT 18 March

Tottenham v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT, 2-5 agg)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Defender Micky van de Ven has launched a staunch defence of his commitment to Tottenham and insisted any reports of players not caring about the club’s precarious situation are nonsense.

Spurs are embroiled in a Premier League relegation battle and reached a nadir last Tuesday when they slipped to a club-record sixth consecutive loss with a 5-2 defeat at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16.

Van de Ven, who has faced criticism following a red card earlier this month against Crystal Palace, hit back at suggestions some players have “checked out” in the survival battle.

“The only thing I can say is it’s not true. It would be strange if a player was in the dressing room now and saying, ‘I’m going to leave either way, or I don’t focus about the situation because everything that’s going to happen, it doesn’t affect me’, so I think it’s just nonsense,” Van de Ven said.

“The other day when we read something about one guy that said to everyone that he’s probably going to leave and doesn’t care about the situation they’re in, and then someone reads this and we’re just like, how does this come out? People are just making things up.

“It’s just frustrating for us as well because it brings so much more trouble as well, because the fans are starting to believe this. Trust me all the people involved on the pitch, the staff, the players, everyone, they care so much about the situation we’re in right now. We just want to turn things around and that’s the most important, that’s the main focus for everyone."

  16. 'We will have our usual intensity'published at 17:08 GMT 18 March

Tottenham v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT, 2-5 agg)

    Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid were already favourites to go through to the quarter-finals before a ball was kicked but last Tuesday’s 5-2 thrashing of Spurs has them odds-on to progress. However, boss Diego Simeone struck a cautious tone at his news conference at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Simeone said: “We want to take the game in the direction we want to. We will have our usual intensity that we had at home, we want to start on the front foot but Tottenham will want to start on the front foot and put on a show for their fans as well.”

First-choice goalkeeper Jan Oblak is absent, which means Juan Musso will deputise for Atletico, but Simeone said: “Juan is performing well and I am happy with his work.”

  17. 'Difficult but not impossible' for Spurs, says Tudorpublished at 17:06 GMT 18 March

Tottenham v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT, 2-5 agg)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Igor Tudor has insisted it is not “impossible” for Tottenham to overturn a three-goal deficit against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Tudor’s month-long reign hit crisis point following a shambolic start in a 5-2 loss in Madrid in last Tuesday’s last-16 first leg.

“Difficult but not impossible,” Tudor said of the task ahead.

“We need to stay in the game as much as possible and the game can be long, so focus on our strengths, our things we can have and everything still to play. So, believe we can do it. That’s the most important thing.

“The main goal is to be focused on this game, even knowing our first thing is to stay in the (Premier) League, but it is let’s say a big challenge.

“After everything that happened in that (first) game to show that we can do good things against them, that they are not better than us. Champions League game. All the glory.”

Whoever wins this tie tonight will know they'll take on defending champions PSG in the quarter-finals. That's a scary thought, isn't it?

Luis Enrique's side made light work of Chelsea last night with a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge, taking the aggregate score to a huge 8-2.

  20. 'Most important game of their season so far'published at 17:00 GMT 18 March

    Liverpool v Galatasaray (20:00 GMT, 0-1 agg)

    Pat Nevin
    Former Everton winger

Liverpool once again struggled to look like, well, Liverpool. In the end, they were caught by Tottenham, which is bordering on criminal. The Reds had everything in their favour. A goal ahead, at home, against an injury-ravaged side with no confidence.

The narrative is that Spurs fought back gamely and maybe there was a flicker, but that isn't what I saw.

Igor Tudor's men didn't play particularly well on Sunday, giving the ball away far too easily and looking unlikely to create much as a result of their collective self-belief being shot to pieces over the past few months.

Yet Liverpool still let it slip at Anfield when the battle for the Champions League places should have been enough to rouse a better performance.

With the defeat by Galatasaray still smarting, the visit of the Turkish side for the second leg could well be the most important game of their season so far.

Not good when they were so average against Spurs.
