  1. 'Real Madrid will want to make a statement after last week and back Vinicius Jr'published at 19:30 GMT 25 February

Real Madrid v Benfica (1-0 agg)

    Nedum Onuoha

On how Real Madrid park their anger ahead of this game:

I don't think they necessarily need to park it, they'll want to redirect it. The fact they're playing the second leg at home with full support of their players and Vinicius Jr in particular, they'll want to make a point, make a statement because of the way Real Madrid have been in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some sort of tifo in support of Vinicius and the players - and they're justified in doing that.

This is their home turf and they will show how much last week means to them and how much Vinicius means to them. I think this is the most motivated we'll see Vinicius before he puts on a Brazil shirt in the summer.

I fully back them to put that anger, that energy into something positive for their side.

Last week’s match was halted for 10 minutes after Vinicius alerted referee Francois Letexier to the incident, before his team-mates temporarily left the pitch.

There were also reports of racist gestures in the stands at Estadio da Luz.

Uefa said further punishment could be handed out to Gianluca Prestianni following a full investigation by an ethics and disciplinary inspector.

Benfica president Rui Costa insisted the 20-year-old winger is “anything but racist” and announced his club has appealed against the suspension.

“I’m not on the pitch to know what was said or not said but as you can imagine, in a situation like that, a lot is said,” Costa told reporters at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport en route to Madrid, according to Benfica’s website.

“But we believe in our player’s word, because more than that, we know the players we have at home.

“Prestianni is being crucified as a racist person, and I can guarantee that he is anything but racist, and that is why we have such confidence in him as a player.”

Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has urged Uefa to “seize this opportunity” to show it is serious in fighting racism following the alleged abuse suffered by Vinicius Jr.

Real forward Vinicius claimed he was racially abused by Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni shortly after scoring the only goal in last week’s Champions League knockout phase play-off first leg between the clubs in Lisbon.

Argentinian winger Prestianni, who denied the allegation, has been handed a one-game ban by Uefa and will miss the second leg in Madrid.

“We are facing a great opportunity to make a significant step forward in the fight against racism,” Arbeloa said at a press conference on Tuesday, according to Real’s website.

“Uefa has always been a strong advocate in the fight against racism, and now they have the opportunity not to leave it as just a slogan or a nice banner before matches. “I hope they seize this opportunity.”

Vinicius, 25, was shown a yellow card for celebrating in front of Benfica’s supporters after his 50th-minute goal. Speaking after the game, Benfica boss Jose Mourinho said he believed the Brazil international acted disrespectfully and incited the crowd.

  4. Prestianni remains banned as Benfica fail in appealpublished at 19:21 GMT 25 February

Earlier today it was announced that Benfica had failed in an appeal against a provisional suspension imposed by Uefa on their player Gianluca Prestianni amid allegations he racially abused Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.

Uefa imposed the provisional sanction on Monday, ruling Prestianni out of Wednesday night’s Champions League play-off round second leg against Real in Madrid.

Benfica announced they would appeal, but Uefa said on Wednesday afternoon it had been dismissed.

“Mr Gianluca Prestianni remains provisionally suspended for the next UEFA club competition match for which he would otherwise be eligible,” a statement read.

Uefa appointed an ethics and disciplinary investigator (EDI) following the first leg, during which Vinicius alleged he was racially abused by Prestianni – something the Benfica player denied.

The Brazilian left the field and refused to return, resulting in a stoppage in play that lasted 10 minutes of last Tuesday’s first leg in Lisbon.

It came after Vinicius had given his team the lead with a wonderful individual strike, curling the ball home from a tight angle five minutes into the second half. After celebrating in front of the home fans, he became suddenly and visibly upset about something said to him and immediately informed the referee, who stopped the match.

  5. Dortmund score to take tie levelpublished at 19:21 GMT 25 February

Atalanta 3-1 Borussia Dortmund (3-3 agg, 75 mins)

Borussia Dortmund, who led this tie with Atalanta 2-0 and then trailed it 3-2, have now pulled it level thanks to a goal from Karim Adeyemi, who had the skill and space to cut inside on to his left foot and provide a fine finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Fifteen minutes left before it goes to extra time.

Vinicius Jnr scored a brilliant winner for Real Madrid against Benfica in their Champions League play-off first leg, which was halted for 10 minutes for alleged racist abuse.

The Brazil forward put the visitors ahead in the 50th minute with a magnificent curling strike past Anatoliy Trubin at the Estadio da Luz.

Vinicius was then booked for an excessive celebration and, following a heated exchange with Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni, he ran over to referee Francois Letexier as he gestured in the direction of the Argentina winger.

Vinicius then walked off the pitch and was followed by his team-mates before play restarted 10 minutes later.

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho was shown two yellow cards in the 85th minute and will be missing from the sideline in the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

There were 12 minutes of added time as a result of play being stopped and during that period an object was thrown from the crowd that struck Vinicius on the arm as he prepared to take a corner.

Before Real took the lead, Vinicius shot narrowly wide following Trent Alexander-Arnold's defence-splitting pass to Federico Valverde.

It has been some turnaround in Italy where Atalanta are 3-0 up against Borussia Dortmund after losing the first leg 2-0.

The opener came after just five minutes when Lorenzo Bernasconi sent a low cross in from the left and Gianluca Scamacca was in the perfect place to tap in.

Atalanta kept up the pressure as Dortmund looked increasingly rattled and the hosts leveled the tie on the stroke of half-time when Davide Zappacosta's shot from outside the box took a deflection on its way into the net.

Borussia Dortmund hit the post early in the second half through Maximilian Beier and it proved a costly miss as Atlanta grabbed a third soon after when Mario Pasalic headed in Marten de Roon's cross at the back post.

There's just over 20 minutes remaining as Atalanta look to seal what would be only their third appearance in the last-16 of the Champions League.
