Two average teams fighting it out. The Boro would outclass both of these.

Not one of Kieran Trippier's best free-kicks as he sends it over the bar.

It seemed like he was aiming to send it to the back post rather than have a shot, but it was that bad it is hard to be sure what he was trying to do.

Some fans on the opposite side of St James' Park thought Anthony Elanga had made it 2-0 then, but his effort, after being released by Nick Woltemade, hit the side netting.

Throughout the first half the home fans have been chanting the name of boss Eddie Howe, for long periods.

So far, this has been the perfect response to their disappointing Champions League exit on Wednesday.

Maybe Elanga is coming into his best period for Newcastle. It hasn't been easy for him, but those couple of goals against Barcelona should give him confidence.

Harvey Barnes and Nick Woltemade combine well to send Anthony Elanga into the box. A neat touch takes him away from Omar Alderete but Elanga slams his shot into the sidenetting.

Important block as Chris Rigg connects well with a low ball into the box.

There was a long check in the background for a potential foul on Anthony Gordon inside the box at the other end, but the check ends with no further action taken.

Brobbey has been impressive. Winning those battles and holding the ball up, but you need to get the ball to him. He looks in the mood.

Dan Burn gets up to meet the delivery from the corner but his header is no trouble for Melker Ellborg.

A dreadful Lutsharel Geertruida attempt to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper gifts Newcastle a corner.

Will they take advantage of another mistake at the back?

Brian Brobbey controls the ball just outside the Newcastle box and turns towards goal. He has a think about what to do next but takes too long and ends up having the ball pinched from him.

If the opposition are pressing you, play long. If they aren't, play short. Take advantage of where you outnumber the opposition. Is it just me or is it simple?

  13. GREAT SAVE!published at 12:24 GMT 22 March

    Newcastle 1-0 Sunderland

Best effort so far from Sunderland! Chemsdine Talbi has space in front of him just outside the box and bends an excellent strike that needs Aaron Ramsdale to dive and push behind.

From the corner, Chris Rigg lashes an effort well over as Newcastle struggle clear initially.

Despite only a small gap in the league, there’s a gulf of class between Newcastle and Sunderland, and Newcastle are going to show this today … mark my words.

Sunderland may be behind but there's a long way to go in this one. Newcastle have been pretty comfortable so far, however.

Why do these teams think they can play short from a goal kick, especially in a highly emotional derby game. Crazy!

You are just not expecting to be gifted something like that so early.

Luke O'Nien is bound to be nervous anyway, but he's been put in a position where he has just panicked a bit.

A few minutes into this derby, why are you playing it short. Absolute disaster for Sunderland, but if you want it to fall to anybody's feet, it would be Gordon, the man in form, and how well did he take it! Look at this, it's an absolute car crash from O'Nien and the goalkeeper.
