O'Nien and Hume are not Premier League players, they just give you nightmares. They don't help the team at all, poor.

For the second half Sunderland should use the bench and actually play their best team. Mukiele, Reinildo, Le Fée straight away

  4. 'Gordon coming into best form before World Cup'published at 13:02 GMT 22 March

I think Anthony Gordon's confidence is up. Goals do that for a forward, but he's never shy in terms of his work ethic and his commitment to the cause. You can never question that with him.

He’s set the tone today in his first-half performance, he's been everywhere, closing people down, and I think when he plays in that central role, he doesn't then have to worry about the long run back with fullbacks.

He can focus all his energy on pressing what's in front of him, and then, of course, he scores the goal, and you can see that emotion in him because he’s obviously a top class player who’s had a tough time and faced a bit of criticism.

So you could kind of see the relief in such a big game for him. And it’s great for Thomas Tuchel that he's now seeing Gordon come into his best form just before the World Cup.

Feel like Sunderland can get back into this on the break. A typical Premier League mid-table derby this. Full of passion.

Newcastle 45 minutes away from their first home win over Sunderland since 2010 following Anthony Gordon's early goal after a mistake from the visitors when playing out from the back.

Sven Botman headed against the post, but Sunderland have shown this one is far from done by forcing home keeper Aaron Ramsdale into an earlier superb save to deny Chemsdine Talbi.

A great atmosphere and both sets of fans will still remain hopeful.

The whistle goes for half time with Newcastle ahead.

Just the one goal in it, however. All to play for in the second half.

There is nothing in the challenge. He has just been done by Elanga's pace. Elanga got his toe there by just a fraction of a second. It wasn't malicious by any means.

Lewis Hall takes this free-kick, his effort clears the wall and bounces in front of Melker Ellborg, but the Sunderland keeper makes the save.

    Newcastle 1-0 Sunderland

Newcastle are pushing as half-time approaches and win a free-kick 35 yards from goal as Anthony Elanga is tripped by Trai Hume, who is booked.

That seems to spark a clash between a few of the players before Anthony Taylor calms the situation down.

A better delivery from Lewis Hall this time from a long throw. Nick Woltemade turns and shoots but his effort is blocked by Lutsharel Geertruida.

Now Newcastle break with Nick Woltemade leading the charge from inside his own half. He waits as Lewis Hall overlaps on his left and passes, but Hall's ball into the box isn't the best.
