Brilliant work down the right from Daniel Bennie who cut it back to Harvey Vale who controlled it with his right and fired into the bottom right hand corner with his left foot. His fist-pumping celebration in the west London sunshine showing just how much it means!

  3. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 15:15 BST 25 April

    Stoke 0-0 Portsmouth

    Bit of housekeeping.

No early goals in this one in the Potteries but there was a very early change in goal for the home side.

Former Stoke man Josef Bursik had to be replaced by Ben Killip inside the first five minutes.

    It has been coming.

Harvey Vale has already hit the post for QPR but he finds the net this time.

Vale is found by Daniel Bennie and smacks a left-foot shot into the bottom corner.

Derby have lost six of their past seven away games and you can see why from this start.

I wouldn't say there's nothing to play for now, but this restores a bit of pride.

What I love is that Wednesday are pressing hard and trying even though they've been relegated for weeks.

We've got to do the same.

Not a good minute for the Sheffield teams.

That's his first league goal since April last year.

    That's a frustrating start.

It looked so simple for Oxford. We just talked about important first goals and so that is just disappointing.

So glad that as a Blackburn fan I'm not looking at the scores every two seconds. I can't think of a recent season where we haven't fought for promotion, or in this season's case, against relegation until the final day! Just wish we kept Eustace or, better, sacked Ismael earlier!

  13. Can Rams still reach play-offs?published at 14:58 BST 25 April

    QPR v Derby (15:00 BST)

The head coach talks to Dominic Dietrich about the final away day

There is a world in which Derby can still reach the play-offs but they have made it harder for themselves and require favours from elsewhere.

The Rams have stalled at the wrong time with three defeats from their past five outings, albeit those losses have come at the hands of Coventry, Southampton and in-form Norwich.

However, Hull's defeat at Charlton at lunchtime means that victory at QPR will lift the Rams to within a point of sixth-placed Wrexham, who travel to champions Coventry on Sunday.

"We haven't had the results we have wanted, we've been in all those games and lost by the odd goal, been in the lead, clawed our way back into some really good positions." sad head coach John Eustace.

"The most disappointing thing is that against top teams we couldn't go on and win the game - it's something we have to work on and learn from."

A further positive for Derby might be today's opposition, QPR, are freewheeling into the summer break.

Performances in defeats by Millwall and Swansea have had that end-of-season feel, a feeling Derby don't want just yet.

  14. Canaries and Swans take flight after false startspublished at 14:56 BST 25 April

    Norwich v Swansea (15:00 BST)

    Media caption,

Boss Vitor Matos seeks three consecutive away league wins as Swans travel to Norwich.

These two may be wondering what might have happened had they changed managers earlier.

Such has been the improvement in their respective form since Philippe Clement took over at Norwich on 17 November and Vitor Matos a week later at Swansea that this meeting might have had more riding on it for both if decisions had been made sooner rather than later.

There is an equation, an unlikely one, where Norwich might still sneak into the play-offs but let's take it one game at a time.

Following Hull's defeat at Charlton, the Canaries must win today, hope Wrexham lose their remaining games and Derby only gain three points from their final two outings - they would also have to then beat Hull in their last game next Saturday

Even if that doesn't happen, what the Canaries and the Swans have done is give their fans something to cheer post-Christmas and an expectation that next season they can be vying for something more tangible.

Nothing to see here really other than two teams hoping a top-10 finish will bring promise of even better things to come next season.

Both have won two of their past six games with any hint of a play-off challenge long since gone.

"The Championship is a hard league, [but] this season obviously we wanted to get promoted, that's not going to happen now, but it's a stepping stone in the right direction," said Blues joint-top scorer Jay Stansfield this week.

He might be right given they only came back into the division at the start of the season.

Bristol City will have the summer to sort out their managerial situation with former England boss Roy Hodgson keeping the seat warm for the final two games and maybe he'll bring out some shorts and a hawaiian shirt to go with the sunglasses he sported at a game recently.

  16. Pride on the line in South Yorkshirepublished at 14:52 BST 25 April

Sheff Utd v Preston (15:00 BST)

It's been a season to forget in many ways for these two teams who are both on 57 points in mid-table.

Although they may have nothing tangible to play for in their final two games of the season, boss Chris Wilder will certainly expect a reaction after their poor showing in the 3-1 home reverse by Blackburn on Wednesday.

Preston have lost their past two but managed by former Blades gaffer Paul Heckingbottom they wont just be turning up in the Steel City for a day out in the sun.

  17. Potters limp to finish line as Pompey mark job donepublished at 14:49 BST 25 April

    Stoke v Portsmouth (15:00 BST)

    PortsmouthImage source, Shutterstock

A season that promised so much has ultimately delivered so little for Stoke. Again.

The Potters made a super start to the campaign and sat in second after 17 matches.

However, the subsequent 27 games have brought a paltry six wins and, barring a miracle, they will finish in the bottom half of the Championship table for the eighth successive season.

Portsmouth will be finishing in the bottom half of the table but, crucially, not in the bottom three.

A run of three successive wins meant that their 5-1 hammering at Coventry on Tuesday was immaterial and they can prepare for a third year of second tier football.

  18. Yellows down and outpublished at 14:47 BST 25 April

Oxford v Sheff Wed (15:00 BST)

Oxford's relegation to League One was confirmed minutes ago by Charlton's win over Hull City and West Brom's draw with Ipswich..

Matt Bloomfield's side gave themselves a chance but the form of the Baggies, Portsmouth and finally the Addicks proved to be too much.

Sheffield Wednesday's relegation was confirmed over two months ago but they've still got something to play for.

With two games to go they need to win one to avoid becoming the first team in English Football League history to end on minus points.

They've lost just one of their past four games but haven't won since a 2-0 success at Portsmouth in September. Could today be the day?

As a Boro fan, great to be back in the goals, but what I would have given for two per game rather than the drought/flood season we've had!

    Adam, Birmingham

I've not felt like this since the 'Great Escape' under Bryan Robson. Squeaky bum time.

Watford are a rudderless ship, floating towards League One next season. Time to sack Scott Duxbury and get someone who knows what they're doing.
