    The curse of the ex...

It's no more than the home side deserve.

Andre Brooks gets the better of Luke Thomas down the Blades right and then keeps his cool to tee up Tom Cannon in the area.

The striker had an unhappy time at Leicester and he confidently drills his low shot into the corner and speeds off to celebrate.

  4. 'We've touched the limit with the squad' - Ismaelpublished at 18:31 GMT 1 January

    FT: Blackburn 0-2 Wrexham

    Media caption,

Valerien Ismael laments another home defeat after Wrexham's New Years Day visit.

On top of a tame home defeat, Blackburn Rovers boss Valerien Ismael faces further headaches after Matty Litherland and Ryan Hedges joined a lengthy injury list.

"It's another setback in terms of the result. I can't complain about the boys, they tried to go again, it was just a lack of energy today," he said.

"We lost the game in the first half. We conceded the first goal, we can avoid it. The second goal is a great shot.

"We tried to find some energy for the second half and it was much better. We lost two players again today, and it's clear we've touched the limit with the squad."

Wrexham assistant boss Steve Parkin said improving their away record had been a priority going into the new year as they snapped a winless run on the road stretching back to September.

"In the context of where we are in the season, it's been a great week," he said.

"The away form has just wavered a bit, and the gaffer made a point of saying that we need to get back on track away from home and we did it quite convincingly."

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna speaking to BBC Radio Suffolk:

"It should have been more comfortable for us.

"The game was there; we got the goal in the first half and played some great stuff through the pitch. We lacked a clinical edge.

"We shouldn't have given away a goal with that level of control. It was harder than it needed to be.

"We knew the game wasn't dead; it was a good reaction to their goal. But we wanted to win the second half. I thought we had good periods, but if you don't kill the game off, it is always going to be edgy."

Oxford United caretaker manager Craig Short speaking to BBC Radio Oxford:

"In the last two games, I've said I want performances and we'll see where we go from there.

"This is a difficult place to come in a busy period, confidence is low. We stuck at it, stayed in the game. I was disappointed when we got back to 1-1, you know we'll have to defend and we had to like we did against Southampton.

"If you stay in the game you've got people to come on and be a threat at the end. The second goal was soft and it deflated us.

"The lads are flat but they've got confidence because of the performance. Everyone is going to play their part in this busy period; it is a massive game on Sunday [against Sheffield United].

"If they have the attitude and desire of today, they'll have a chance."

    FT: Charlton 1-1 Coventry

Charlton boss Nathan Jones speaking to BBC Radio London:

"First of all, it was an excellent football game with both sides going right at the game to try and win it. To concede after two minutes and to put in the performance showed we have bags and bags of character.

After the goal in the first half I thought we were brilliant. I thought we tested them, we were athletic. Second half they had one or two chances but we had so many situations. That was a top level Championship game.

They defend for their manager proper but we kept testing them and tried to win it with positive subs. Overall was it a fair result."

Coventry City boss Frank Lampard told BBC Radio CWR:

"Hard, tough and expected against a team who are in the image of their manager – a lot of passion, fight and direct. There were waves of the game where it gets messy, intense and physical. We knew that going into the game.

"We are not as clinical as we were earlier in the season but that was always going to come. I don’t think any team in this league goes win win win and carries on like that."

[On the transfer window] "We have had a fantastic first half of the season. But the boys are tired because they have given everything and that can sometimes make you come down a bit – a tiny five per cent – which is where you need the freshness and impact."

  7. 'This group of players will sweat blood for the fans'published at 18:24 GMT 1 January

    FT: Derby 1-0 Middlesbrough

    Media caption,

Derby County head coach John Eustace speaks following the match against Middlesbrough.

Derby County head coach John Eustace speaking to BBC Radio Derby:

“We started slow and the opposition had two or three really good chances and we rode our luck, but as the game went on we grew into it and adapted a couple of things.

“In the second half I felt a lot more comfortable with our shape. We knew we would get a couple of opportunities and I’m delighted to end up winning 1-0.

“Where we lack with a little bit of quality, we made up with determination, grit and heart. I know that group of players will sweat blood for these fans and I think they did that today."

Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg speaking to BBC Radio Tees:

“It was unbelievable winning the first four games, having that start.

"But then getting one point from the next four and not scoring, creating a lot of chances, playing a lot of good football and goalkeepers being the man of the matches almost every game, that hurts.

“Looking at the table, we are back to the same position we when we started eight games ago and that hurts also. The result today hurt.

“But we cannot just say ‘it’s not going our way’. It’s not, but we have to find a way and get better at those things."

Bristol City boss Gerhard Struber speaking to BBC Radio Bristol:

“This result could be nearly perfect. We executed the high press so well and this is what makes me really happy.

“We gifted Portsmouth nothing today. We got a clean sheet, we were stable and in control, and killed every hope they had.

On whether Sinclair Armstrong has turned a corner this season: “There was no turning point for him this season, we are just at a point where he understands what I want, what he can be, and what his outstanding strengths are.

"The whole atmosphere in the team is on a really good level right now. We had a plan and we executed it."

Portsmouth boss John Mousinho speaking to BBC Radio Solent:

"Bristol City completely dominated us, we have to move on very quickly as we have some important games coming up.

"As a coaching staff we have to take responsibility for the team set up and tactics, the players have to take responsibility for their part too.

"It’s tough for us out there at the moment with the injuries we have, today’s not good enough but hopefully the fans can stick with us as we have some big games coming up.

"It’s probably the worst patch we’ve had at the moment, this was one game too far for us against a strong side, there was a real gulf between the two sides."

Right, while it's break time at Bramall Lane, let's grab some reaction from some of today's earlier games...

  10. 'Leicester second best'published at 18:20 GMT 1 January

    HT: Sheff Utd 1-0 Leicester

    Matty Fryatt
Former Leicester City striker on Radio Leicester

Leicester have just got to find those moments in the second half.

At the minute, Leicester have just been secondary to everything. It's just too flat, we've been passive in our play. It's just been lacking that oomph.

Sheffield United have been proactive to everything.

  11. 'So far so good'published at 18:19 GMT 1 January

    HT: Sheff Utd 1-0 Leicester

    Danny Hall
Sheffield Star journalist on BBC Radio Sheffield

It was a matter of time for the goal.

You don't get points for possession, you've got to make it happen and we did. Perhaps we didn't expect it to come in the fashion it did.

I'm amazed at how bad Leicester have been. Their only saving grace is that they could be going in 3-0 down at the break, they're lucky it's only one.

So far so good for United.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:16 GMT 1 January

The Blades more than good value for their half-time lead.

    Leicester lacklustre.

Japhet Tanganga's header is the difference on the scoreboard but on the pitch these pair have been miles apart.

Can the Foxes improve after the break? I doubt they can be much worse.

Leicester have now gone 19 league games without a clean sheet.

It always looked like it was a matter of time until the Blades scored this evening.

Can the Foxes respond? They've been second-best all over the pitch so far.

Match to match, 45 minutes to 45 minutes, which Leicester City will turn up? Nobody knows. Seems like the passive, unconfident, deep sitting, waiting to be scored against version is with us today. We'll start playing midway through the second half once we're three down.

  18. 'Great leap by Tanganga'published at 18:08 GMT 1 January

    Sheff Utd 1-0 Leicester

    Danny Hall
Sheffield Star journalist on BBC Radio Sheffield

We said Leicester needed to get to half-time and weather the storm.

Tanganga has a ridiculous leap on him and he out-jumps Luke Thomas. When he met it you just knew it was destined for the net.

To say this has been coming is the understatement of the year...

The home side win another corner down their right and skipper Japhet Tanganga gets up brilliantly to bullet home a header.

The marking from Leicester is... substandard.

  20. 'Leicester need to get going'published at 18:04 GMT 1 January

The Leicester players really need to get going in this game.

Sheffield United are holding a high line, Leicester need to look to threaten that.
