Leeds ran out 2-1 winners when they last visited Liverpool in the Premier League in October 2022.

But a lot has changed since that triumph.

Jurgen Klopp was in the Liverpool dugout and Jesse Marsch was in charge of Leeds.

If Leeds manage to repeat that feat then it will be the first time they have recorded consecutive league wins at Anfield.

Arne Slot admitted that Liverpool struggled to adapt when Leeds switched formation to play with a 4-3-3 last month and it looks like that's how they will lineup again today.

Liverpool led 2-0 before Daniel Farke made the change and Leeds scored twice in three minutes to level.

Dominik Szoboszlai restored Liverpool's advantage only for Ao Tanaka to equalise again for the hosts in injury time.

"What I mainly took from it was that we struggled much more when they went to a four and played 4-3-3 in the last 20 minutes of the game," said Slot.

"That's also when they scored their goals. We struggled more when they played with four than when they played with five so I will definitely look at both but especially the moment when they went to four at the back."

Leeds have embraced a more direct approach in recent times and this has paid off in style, particularly to get the best out of striker Calvert-Lewin.

His sensational run of form continued against Sunderland with a seventh goal in six top-flight matches.

He is only the 11th English player to score in six consecutive Premier League appearances, and the first since Joe Willock netted in seven in a row from April to May 2021. He's also the first Leeds player to achieve this in the top flight since John McCole in 1959-60.

It might not be the biggest deal of the January window but there has already been an outgoing at Anfield.

Liverpool left-back James Norris has signed for Shelbourne.

The 22-year-old had been on loan with the Irish Premier Division side since February and has now made the move permanent. Norris joined Liverpool's academy at under-nine level, and leaves having made two senior appearances for the Reds.

Norris, who has represented England at under-19 level, was also named on the bench four times last season.

Quite surprising. Never really saw a team address it in this way, which sounds quite direct and to the point.

Clearly there was a power struggle. It sounds as if Chelsea are protecting themselves.

When Enzo Maresca came to Chelsea football club he wasn't inheriting a team which was flying.

If you look at Brennan Johnson's chance conversion in 2025, he scored a chance 36% of the time, that ranks him in the top 1% in Europe. He is very effective in that position.

Looking at Palace's system and someone like Ismaila Sarr who is a goalscorer from midfield, that is what Johnson can do for them which will add such depth to their team. £35m is a steal.

  8. Problems for Palace at both ends of the pitchpublished at 17:07 GMT 1 January

Crystal Palace v Fulham (17:30 GMT)

Sunday’s defeat by Spurs encapsulated where it’s going wrong for Crystal Palace of late, as their manager Oliver Glasner is well aware.

“We created enough to score goals but miss all our chances and get punished by a corner, a set-play,” he lamented soon after the final whistle. “We need to get this fixed.”

While the expected goals metric is given greater credence by some than others, it does lay bare Palace’s attacking shortcomings this season. They would have reasonably been expected to score 29 league goals so far based on the quality of chances created; their actual tally of 21 goals equates to by far the biggest underperformance in the division.

Jean Philippe Mateta was the Premier League’s second highest scorer in 2025 with 17 goals but the only one of those to come in his last eight top-flight games was a penalty. The absence of dynamic duo Ismaila Sarr and Daniel Munoz on the right-hand side has been keenly felt, prompting Palace to make a £35m move for Brennan Johnson.

At the other end of the pitch, Crystal Palace are suffering from the yips when it comes to defending set-pieces. Eight of the nine most recent goals conceded by the Eagles in all competitions, including each of the past seven, have come from dead-ball situations: four corners, two throw-ins, one penalty and a direct free kick.

Unfortunately Maresca had several problems. 1. Boring football 2. Appalling defence 3. Never a settled team 4. Two Sporting Directors who should not hold those positions.

I'm sure Chelsea's next coach will be thrilled by the idea that they got the job from being pliable and subservient, rather than their merits as a manager.

Fulham's Harry Wilson is a man in form.

Wilson has nine goal involvements this season - scoring five and assisting four - and is just one short of his best ever return in a single Premier League campaign.

For all of Liverpool's struggles this season, they have a chance to go five points clear in 4th this evening.

Arne Slot's side are unbeaten in seven and the Liverpool boss described that run as "special" but he knows full well that his team have been far from convincing in recent weeks. The fans will want a performance tonight.

They're up against a Leeds outfit who are in a "good moment" according to Slot in his programme notes. Daniel Farke's side are unbeaten in five and will take plenty of confidence from their 3-3 draw at Elland Road when these two sides met in December.

Cody Gakpo was a target for Leeds in the summer of 2022 but he remained at PSV Eindhoven and eventually joined Liverpool in January 2023.

The Netherlands international has a habit of starting the year on a positive note - scoring in Liverpool’s first Premier League game of each of the last two calendar years against Newcastle and Man United.

The last Liverpool player to score in their first league game three years in a row was Ian Rush in 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Gakpo returned from three games on the sidelines with injury to make a five minute cameo last time out against Wolves and he's back on the bench today.

Crystal Palace v Fulham (17:30 GMT)

Given the success Crystal Palace have enjoyed in recent years, their poor home record against Fulham is surprising.

The Eagles have failed to win (drawn two, lost two) or score in any of their last four Premier League home games against Fulham, since a 2-0 victory in February 2019.

In fact, the away team is unbeaten in each of the last nine Premier League meetings between the two (five wins, four draws).

Will that run continue today, or will Palace reverse the trend?

  15. Slot hails 'special' resultspublished at 16:52 GMT 1 January

    Liverpool v Leeds (17:30 GMT)

Liverpool's three successive defeats in November, which came at the end of the run which saw them lose five times in seven outings, now seems a long time ago.

They are unbeaten in seven and have won four in a row - three of those in the Premier League - to climb up to fourth.

Arne Slot feels the recent upturn in results is even more "special" as they contend with a growing list of absentees.

"One way to have game management is the ability to make extra substitutions," Slot said.

"Last year when we were one goal up, a lot of times I brought Wataru Endo in. I don't know know if anyone notices it but we are missing quite a lot of players. That's why it's so special that the players who are fit are bringing in these results.

"If you look at our bench, there's no midfielder that has played more than 10 minutes in the Premier League so far - so that's why I'm so pleased with current results. Because we don't drop points, nobody talks about the players we've missed."

Farke is doing a brilliant job, but I think he's got this team selection wrong.

    Pete, Keighley

Toffee fan here: I agree with Farke. Calvert-Lewin has been through a lot injury-wise and is still pretty fragile. His time needs to be managed, especially over the festive picture period. He can easily pick up recent form coming off the bench.

Crystal Palace v Fulham (17:30 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva speaking to Sky Sports: "We have to keep going. We know the demands of the Premier League. This afternoon is going to be another big challenge for us. We know for us to get three points we have to be at our best in all details, on and off the ball."

On challenges he expects from Crystal Palace: "Physical side, they are different home and away. The approach is different. Away from home they are comfortable waiting for the opposition, at home they go more for the game and it is more open. They are physical on set pieces as well."

On if losing to Palace at Craven Cottage will motivate Fulham today: "We had more chances to win but football is like that. Sometimes 10 players around the box is not easy to face. That game is done already, nothing to change about that. It's going to be a different story, we don't need that motivation."

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we showed a good performance against Tottenham but we didn't get rewarded by scoring a goal and this is what we try to do better today.

"Everybody was disappointed after the defeat and heads were down. It was important to lift heads and lift the mood."

On if his side can break Fulham down after they kept successive clean sheets: "I think so. Three weeks ago we showed it at Craven Cottage. Small margins will decide it like in any game and hopefully the small margins are on our side."

  20. Sutton's predictionspublished at 16:41 GMT 1 January

Crystal Palace v Fulham (17:30 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    Former Premier League striker

Crystal Palace have lost three league games in a row, while Fulham have won three in a row.

It's not long since I was concerned Fulham could be getting dragged into a relegation scrap, but they are looking up the table now and are level on points with the Eagles after moving into the top half.

I watched Palace's defeat against Tottenham on Sunday and they just looked exhausted, but they still created some chances and were unlucky not to take something from the game.

You would go with Fulham again here on form, but I actually think Palace will deal with them much better than West Ham did.

The Eagles could do with getting a break - as in a mid-season break - but they just need a bit of luck in front of goal too and they will be back to winning ways.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-0
