Former Chelsea and Fulham goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Selhurst Park

For Palace and their fans, players and manager it feels like they need a couple of new signings. They need one or two real statement signings to say we lost big players and were not going to be able to replace them like for like.

  2. 'Live and die by results'published at 16:35 GMT 25 January

    FT: Brentford 0-2 Nottingham Forest

    Brentford

Brentford manager Keith Andrews, speaking to Sky Sports: "The way we conceded the goals doesn't sit well with me. We controlled large parts of the game, although we lost our way a bit after conceding the first.

"For large parts of the game I was content but you can't concede goals like that.

"Forest got the game they wanted, able to sit in and hit on the counter. We look at ourselves first and shouldn't be conceding that goal. If we're being critical and honest with each other it wasn't good enough.

"We lost it in all areas a bit for 15 or 20 minutes after conceding and were a bit passive. We grabbed control against after 35 minutes, caused problems and created enough to get a result.

"We haven't scored in the last two games and have come away with nothing.

"I was pleased with two-thirds of the performance today but we live and die by results. We need to be more clinical in both sides of the game."

  3. 'Very good team performance'published at 16:35 GMT 25 January

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior, speaking to Match of the Day: "Very pleased. This is always a very difficult place to come. Crystal Palace are a very good team. What the players have given is outstanding. It's frustrating to not have a clean sheet in the last few minutes - I wanted three in a row and we should've got one, we were 3-0 up against 10 men.

"But there's so much good. I thought we defended from the front, we were organised and were very clinical. All credit to the lads. We can be better on the ball, especially in the first half but in terms of what I want to see from a team performance, it was a very good one."

  4. Newcastle 'hurt' by Guimaraes absencepublished at 16:30 GMT 25 January

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to Sky Sports: "Missed opportunities for us. Sandro [Tonali] has that chance right at the start of the game and if it goes in it's a different game. I thought we were better in the second half than the first. There were chances and moments there without our final ball being of the quality that it normally is. A lot of the crossing was poor.

"There main threat was long shots and they scored one. That changes the whole game. It was blustery and windy, we can't use that as an excuse, we are just disappointed with a lot of our final actions because I thought generally we were okay in the game.

"We had enough time to recover from our last game. It is a season where we are constantly mentally challenged in respect of playing and recovering. Villa had a very similar schedule to us and just executed the final bit better than us.

"They have played very well today and as the away team are probably pleased with how they have conducted the game."

On Joelinton's injury: "He felt his groin. We don't know how serious that is. Going back to Bruno [Guimaraes] I think we missed his abilty to pass forward today. There was certainly an element of our game that got hurt by him not being here.

"He is possibly the focal point for a lot of our build play. We maybe suffered from not having him but we have to be able to play without him as well and hope we don't have to do that for too long."

  6. 'Fight the whole game'published at 16:19 GMT 25 January

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-3 chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea striker Joao Pedro, speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew this would be a tough game, they have a strong team. We knew we need to win second balls and fight the whole game. We scored three goals, conceded, but get the three points.

"In the first half we could have played more with the ball, and did not control the game but at half-time the gaffer told us to keep going, play with intensity and when we scored the second we could breathe a bit."

On the penalty Chelsea were awarded: "As soon as I controlled the ball I took a shot as quickly as possible. I saw his arm away from his body, that's was why I asked for handball, the ref gave it and we scored."

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa's first goalscorer Emiliano Buendia, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think mainly really to compete well, be strong and fight in every duel for the ball. We haven't had success in this stadium for a while and we knew how difficult they make it for opponents. We fought for every ball and had the patience with the ball.

"It's a tough schedule for us but it is what we want to do, play in European competitions and fight for these places in the Premier League so we have to adapt, fight and play and recover and go again. I am really proud of this team. we made a huge effort on Thursday and again today.

"We have to look to be there and fight until the end. We know what we want to achieve, fighting for the Champions League spots. To score is always a nice feeling but the main thing is to help the team. To open the game with that kind of goal helps the momentum of the game turn in our favour. I am really happy and we deserved the three points"

  8. 'Villa's quality outshone Newcastle today'published at 16:11 GMT 25 January

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live at St James' Park

You're looking at Aston Villa going forward, those little interlinks. Morgan Rogers sensational. Ollie Watkins could've had a few. Little bit of the spring of Leon Bailey when he came on.

Overall, the quality outshone today with their performance and you can see they're the team towards the top of the Premier League.

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is a really difficult place to come and the momentum they get from their fans.

"I think we got the gameplan spot on today. We didn't play in front of them, we just played in behind and I don't think they were prepared for that. I feel like it was a strong performance from us and I think we could have won the game by a lot more.

"I've had some shocking performances here so it was nice to break the duck and perform individually and as a team. It is massive for us and it is a nice feeling. We had a bad result against Everton, so to bounce back and get three points on the road against Newcastle, it's big, so we're really happy."

Villa bossed us today. Well done. Gordon and Tonali have had very disappointing seasons compared to last year. Ramsey, Woltemade, Wissa and Elanga all been poor signings. Not happening at all for Newcastle and won’t finish in the top six. Very disappointing.

    Robinson, Glasgow

It's painful supporting Newcastle. You never know which side is going to turn up. Pathetic today.

    FT: Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea

    Mark Schwarzer
Former Chelsea and Fulham goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra at Selhurst Park

Chelsea were good for the win, they controlled the majority of the game. Liam Rosenior will be disappointed with the way they lost control towards the end of the game with Palace having some good chances and getting their goal, but Chelsea did deserve the win in the end.

  12. 'Classic away performance from Villa'published at 16:02 GMT 25 January

    FT: Newcastle 0-2 Aston Villa

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live at St James' Park

It's been a classic away performance from Aston Villa.

They've stuck in, defended when they needed to and jumped out from that press. They've played some lovely football.

Newcastle have been frustrated all afternoon.

It really is a disappointing attacking performing from Brentford all being, they missed two chances early on.

Credit to Forest, they performed well and managed to take advantage of Brentford's main men not performing well.

A very professional Aston Villa performance gives them their first Premier League victory at St James' Park since 2005, when Juan Pablo Angel and Gareth Barry were the scorers in a 3-0 win and Steven Taylor, Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were all sent off for the hosts.

    Crystal Palace 1-3 Chelsea

Crystal Palace's miserable run goes on and last season's FA Cup winners are having a shocking time. They sold captain Marc Guehi, top scorer Jean-Philippe Mateta wants to leave, manager Oliver Glasner is leaving and now midfielder Adam Wharton will be out of their next match after getting sent off.

But Chelsea, with Estevao, Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez scoring, were already well on course for the three points before Wharton's dismissal.

A late goal from Chris Richards was nothing more than a consolation.
