  3. Freefalling Rovers looking for a final day parachutepublished at 14:55 BST 2 May

    Tranmere v Grimsby (15:00 BST)

Two wins and two draws in 21 games can only be described as relegation form.

When Tranmere beat struggling Harrogate on New Year's Day they were 15 points clear of the EFL trapdoor. They enter the final day of the campaign just one point clear of danger.

Pete Wild's side are looking for just a second win in 12 home games against Grimsby to secure their league status. A draw, or yet another defeat in 2026, leaves them at the mercy of the team's behind.

Dave Artell's Mariners have come through a busy schedule against sides at the top to secure a play-off place and could finish the season as high as fourth with a win on Merseyside.

These two sides could still be two divisions apart come August.

  4. Sulphurites aiming to time escape plan to perfectionpublished at 14:53 BST 2 May

    Harrogate v Barnet (15:00 BST)

Harrogate Town are the only side in the League Two relegation battle to have spent every matchday below the cutline since the turn of the year, and what a day it would be to buck that trend this afternoon.

Victory at Walsall last Saturday was the third in five games for Simon Weaver's side, but the job is far from done yet. Three points today feels like a must, but may not be enough if results elsewhere go against them.

A point could be enough to preserve their league status if Crawley lose at home to Salford.

They face today one of the form sides in the division, though Barnet's first season back in the EFL can't be extended beyond 46 games given that the two sides they could theoretically catch in the race for the final play-off place - Chesterfield and Swindon - face off on the final day.

It's the home fans that will be keeping an eye on proceedings elsewhere today.

Christian Fuchs has urged Newport County to take the "fire" out of their final game of the season at Barrow, which will decide their League Two fate.

Victory in Cumbria against the division's bottom side will guarantee Newport's survival, though they might not need to win - or even draw - if other results go their way.

The Exiles are 21st in the table, one point ahead of Crawley Town and Harrogate Town, who host Salford City and Barnet respectively.

Barrow still have a slim chance of staying up but need to beat Newport and hope both Crawley and Harrogate lose - with a big swing in goal difference.

With so much at stake when the two sides meet at Holker Street, emotions could run high.

But after the drama of last Saturday's extraordinary 3-2 win over Oldham Athletic, Newport boss Fuchs wants his side to take the passion out of their concluding fixture.

"Why should I talk to them about what's at stake? Everybody knows that already," said the former Leicester City defender.

"It's more about the approach, what we want to implement in a game, and what the mindset needs to be.

"And to be fair, the boys were brilliant when it came to that last weekend, when they just keep pushing, believing in themselves.

"I expect them [Barrow] to come at us hard to start with and it's about us, to be resilient, to take our chances, to take as much fire out of the game as possible and just play a professional game."

  6. A real relegation six-pointer?published at 14:51 BST 2 May

    Barrow v Newport (15:00 BST)

In the story of the battle to beat the drop from the Football League, it doesn't get much bigger than two of the five teams in contention facing off on the final day.

For Barrow the outlook is simple. Sam Foley's side - who prop up the division after 45 games with 36 points - must win to stand a chance of survival, but have only picked up one victory in their past five in their attempts to avoid a return to the National League after six seasons in the EFL.

It's very much out of the Holker Street side's hands, however, and a win would prove in vain should Harrogate or Crawley avoid defeat.

Newport have spent over the half the season in the bottom two, but two wins in their last three have seen them rise to their highest position since August.

It is only a point from danger though, and Christian Fuchs' team are far from safe on 40 points. A sixth away win of the season would be enough to guarantee survival, while a point would be enough depending on other results.

Defeat would leave the travelling Exiles very anxious of a return to the National League for the first time in 14 seasons.

There is a scenario where both sets of fans go home with the weight of relegation on their shoulders come 5pm this evening - but maybe better to cross that bridge if and when we come to it.

  7. Equation simple at County Groundpublished at 14:49 BST 2 May

    Swindon v Chesterfield (15:00 BST)

    Ben Mundy
BBC Final Score at the County Ground

Talk about a bank holiday cliche. I have already visited the DIY store, dropped some rubbish at the tip and I’m now at the football.

And some football this could be. A good ol’ fashioned, straight shootout for the final play-off spot in League Two. Reds v Blues, seventh v eighth.

Chesterfield need a win or a draw. Swindon must take maximum points.

The hosts have not had a great lead up to this one either. Ian Holloway described their 4-0 defeat at Grimsby last weekend as “gutless” and as such, make four changes.

So I won't be the only one expecting a reaction from the hosts.

Cannot wait. Not least because this decider doesn’t require a calculator, abacus or even fingers to work out.

A massive game in the context of the final League Two play-off spot.

So, how did we get here?

After Swindon's 4-0 drubbing by Grimsby last Saturday and Chesterfield's 2-0 win over Crewe, the Robins were the side to suffer as the Spireites leapfrogged them into the final play-off spot to set up today's shootout.

Swindon sit on 75 points in eighth having not won in their past three league outings while Paul Cook's side go into this unbeaten in their past seven sitting in seventh on 76 points.

If the hosts pull off the win today then Ian Holloway's side will have completed their first league double over Chesterfield since 2015-16, after winning this season’s reverse clash 2-1 in November.

It'll be some day for either set of fans at the County Ground, that's for sure.

Notts County: Goalkeeper Belshaw and head cach Paterson on Magpies' promotion bid

It'll take something out of the ordinary for Notts County to seal automatic promotion today.

The side will have to bank on both Cambridge United losing and Salford City earning no more than a point to be in with a chance.

Even if that happens, they still have to beat the most in-form team in the league in Bristol Rovers, who have won eight successive league games under boss Steve Evans.

But hope, however slim, still remains and goalkeeper James Belshaw, a boyhood fan of the Magpies, has every intention of fighting until the bitter end.

"I love this football club, and if I can be a part of it, if I can be a part of history then I'll give whatever I can," Belshaw told BBC East Midlands Today.

"Everyone knows how desperately I want this for the club, for the city, for the fans, for family and for everyone so it won't be through lack of effort and lack of trying."

  10. An explosive ending incoming?published at 14:45 BST 2 May

    Crawley v Salford (15:00 BST)

    Media caption,

Colin Kazim-Richards talks ahead of Crawley Town's game with Salford.

Salford sit on the brink of promotion and if they take a win and Cambridge do not, it's off to League One they go.

But while the Ammies are guaranteed another shot through the play-offs if they fail to gain promotion here, Crawley will not be so lucky.

If the Red Devils don't claim victory but Harrogate do against Barnet, then the side will be saying goodbye to the EFL.

However, Crawley Town boss Colin Kazim-Richards believes today isn't just a day to stomp out fears of relegation, it's also a time to send out a message for next season.

"It would be an absolute explosion if we don't do what we are supposed to do," Kazim-Richards told BBC Radio Sussex.

"Simple fact. Ten months of a season which has been an absolute grind - it's been one of those seasons where we've been stuck in the mud.

"But if we put it to bed with three points, we're looking forward to the next season. You're sending out subliminal [messages] to the rest of the league."

Neil Harris and Cambridge are in a rare position of power on the final day where they could seal automatic promotion back to League One with any result.

A win guarantees their elevation, they could even draw or lose and depending on the outcomes of the games involving Salford City and Notts County they will get the big prize.

You can't underestimate the job Mark Bonner and Neil Harris have done at the Abbey Stadium and the turnaround in their fortunes.

Hopefully for them it's a day to celebrate, they couldn't have handpicked better opposition Crewe haven't beaten them in a league game since 2018!

    Crewe v Cambridge (15:00 BST)

    Media caption,

Dominic Ball ahead of Cambridge's trip to Crewe in League Two.

    Promotion is in Cambridge's hands.

The side have only won two of their past eight matches (D4 L2) before last week's victory over Barnet ensured they remained in third position for the final day.

However, both those two wins came over automatic promotion rivals Notts County and Salford City and they will be aiming to slam the door shut once and for all with a victory over Crewe.

"It's a very good season, it's been exciting - and even more exciting now going into the last game," U's midfielder Dom Ball told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

"I don't think you can hide from it. We've worked very hard to get there but we haven't finished the job, and you can sense that with everyone now.

"We've got the opportunity to go and finish the job and that's what we'll be trying to do on Saturday."

At the very top, MK Dons and Bromley will be vying for the title.

Just beneath them Cambridge United, Salford City and Notts County seek automatic promotion, while it'll be a straight shoot-out between Swindon Town and Chesterfield for the final play-off spot.

It'll take a spectacular performance from Barrow - and luck elsewhere - to avoid relegation as they face fellow relegation-threatened team Newport County.

Also hoping to avoid the drop are Harrogate Town, Crawley Town and Tranmere Rovers.

    Brace yourself.

Three teams are trying to snag that final automatic promotion place in League Two while one of Swindon or Chesterfield will pinch the remaining play-off spot.

At the bottom, four sides have a realistic chance of avoiding the drop but the game appears to be up for Barrow barring a mathematical miracle.

  17. An obvious objective for Orientpublished at 14:29 BST 2 May

Leyton Orient v Burton (15:00 BST

Three points to secure a place in the Third Tier. That's the goal for Richie Wellens and Leyton Orient against Burton Albion this afternoon.

A year ago, the O's were flying high in the League One play-offs, but today is all about survival.

For those of you who like a goal difference permutation or two to keep your final day spicy, this game is the one. Despite being clear of the relegation zone, and two points better off than Exeter, a point today may not be enough for the hosts if the Grecians win, as Matt Taylor's side have a superior goal difference number.

Three points would require a first victory in eight games, and there would be no better time to achieve that.

Perhaps Orient can take heart from the reverse fixture, when they ran out 4-0 winners at the Pirelli Stadium. A repeat today would secure a fourth season at this level.

  18. One going down, will one go up?published at 14:26 BST 2 May

Northampton Town v Plymouth Argyle (15:00 BST)

    Adam Whitty
    BBC Final Score

Those who know Northampton will know that the big, architectural presence is their elevator testing tower - and bear with me, I will be stretching a metaphor to its limits here, today we will find whether it's one, or two teams going to new floors.

We know that The Cobblers are going to the level below, relegated already after a miserable run of 11 defeats in a row.

But just as the lift doors are closing on League One - Tom Cleverly and his Plymouth side are running towards them, trying to get their hands inside. If results go their way, they could just sneak in, pushing the doors open to go up.

For them, the permutations are simple, but out of their hands. They need to win, and hope that Luton and Stevenage don't win. Tough odds, but this is a resurgent side who have lost just once in their last 15.

As an aside, when these two played each other in November, Northampton won 3-0. Plymouth were second-bottom, and seven points and nine places behind Northampton. Now, Argyle are 35 points clear.

    We're under way at Sixfields.

Plymouth's play-off hopes are still glimmering after their 2-1 win over Port Vale last Saturday seeing them go five games unbeaten in the process.

That runs sees the Tom Cleverley's sit eighth in League One and two points adrift the top six. So, if they do their job here and Luton and Stevenage drop points, the Pilgrims will creep in.

It's been a season to forget for Northampton.

Their 1-0 by Barnsley on Tuesday means they have set an unwanted new club record of 10 straight league defeats.

Having already had relegation confirmed and set to finish bottom of the table, they'll be hoping to give their fans a win today and avoid making it 11 losses on the bounce.

If they do manage that, the Cobblers could record their first league double over Plymouth since 1997-98 after their 3-0 win in November.

  20. Can Stockport respond to Vale loss?published at 14:21 BST 2 May

    Barnsley v Stockport (15:00 BST)

    Rob Law
    BBC Final Score at Oakwell

On an afternoon of permutations, Stockport's job is very clear - they need to win or draw to ensure their place in the League One play-offs.

County could have confirmed their place in the top six in midweek but for a frustrating defeat by an already relegated Port Vale side.

That led to a furious outburst from boss Dave Challinor afterwards. Will he get the desired response and result this afternoon?

Barnsley stand in their way and are out to spoil the party.
