    Van Gerwen v Merk

    Mark Webster
Former BDO world champion on Sky Sports

It is a game that I think Michael van Gerwen will win, but because of what is next - Gary Anderson - he'll want to put on a show. His run should allow him to build up some form.

  2. It's time for Wright to retire - Van Gerwenpublished at 21:38 GMT 28 December 2025

    Van Gerwen v Merk

    Adam Millington
    BBC Sport journalist

Michael van Gerwen says Peter Wright should retire after his emphatic defeat in the second round of the PDC World Championship.

Two-time world champion Wright won just two legs and averaged below 80 as he was surprisingly beaten by debutant Arno Merk on Tuesday.

Van Gerwen, who has won the world title three times, said he was "not surprised by [Wright's] performance" given the Scotsman's inconsistent recent record and "it's time for him to retire anyway".

Wright, who became world champion in 2020 and 2022, has not made it past the quarter-finals of any televised ranking tournament in the past two years.

The Dutchman's comments follow Wright's recent suggestion that Van Gerwen's "vision is probably going".

We have seen some heavy thrashings and some titanic clashes today. Will this one fit either bill?

  5. 'Could be the difference between being world champion again or not'published at 21:32 GMT 28 December 2025

    Humphries 4-2 Clemens

Luke Humphries talking to Sky Sports: "For me, I thought when I missed the double to go 3-0 up, I don't think I really dropped off but Gabriel got a lot better. If that double 13 doesn't go in, it is 3-3 and I'm panicking. That could be the difference between being world champion again or not. I just found another level there when I needed it.

"I felt like I was searching at times with the first treble going in and then not the second. I found them in the right moments at certain times. He put me under pressure and that's what you need to do against me and Luke Littler. I'm through and that is amazing for myself."

    Humphries 4-2 Clemens

A hug between Luke Humphries and Gabriel Clemens, such mutual respect.

Clemens should be very proud, the way he fought back from being totally out of that match to push the second seed to the very edge.

Few players will play as well as that in defeat at these championships.
