  1. What's happened on day four?published at 05:00 GMT 7 January

Day four got off to a rocky start for England, who lost captain Ben Stokes to a right adductor injury inside the opening half hour.

However, Josh Tongue struck twice in quick succession to remove Steve Smith (139, caught behind) and the dangerous Mitchell Starc (5, bowled) and Will Jacks accounted for Scott Boland to end Australia’s innings without too much lower-order chaos.

From 518-7 overnight (leading by 134), Australia were bowled out for 567 to lead by 183. Beau Webster was unbeaten on 71.

It was a familiar start to England’s second innings, Starc striking fifth ball to remove Zak Crawley lbw for 1.

And they should have been two down at lunch, Cameron Green needlessly diving across Smith at second slip to hand Ben Duckett a life on 38: England 80-1 at the interval.

Duckett failed to capitalise on his reprieve – bowled for Michael Neser for 42 – before Boland removed Joe Root lbw for 6.

But Jacob Bethell stood firm, steering England to 174-3 at tea alongside Harry Brook.

In the opening 30 minutes of the final session, England's fourth-wicket pair have overturned Australia's lead. The hosts will bat again.

England are 205-3, leading by 22. Brook is unbeaten on 35 (34). Bethell is on the brink of a maiden first-class century - he's 99 off 156.

  6. Eng 200-3published at 46 overs

Scott Boland is not giving this up for free. Jacob Bethell has to keep his cool as the Aussie seamer tests his defences and judgment outside off stump.

Bethell moves to 97 - his highest Test score - with a defensive prod into the off side for a single from the final ball of the over.

  7. Eng 200-3published at 45.1 overs

If Harry Brook can play like he is and survive until the close, England will be well ahead.

  10. Eng 195-3published at 44 overs

With England in the black, Harry Brook shimmies down the pitch to Scott Boland and whips it down the ground for four. Measured aggression, rather than reckless abandon from England's vice-captain.

Jacob Bethell has little else to prove today but Harry Brook needs to show that he has the temperament and mental ability for captain in a post-Bazball and post-Stokes environment.

Does this Bethell innings keep Brendon McCullum and Rob Key in a job? They’ve bet the house on his development the last year by wrapping him in cotton wool, maybe this gets them out of jail?

Marnus Labuschagne with a shy at the non-striker's end after Jacob Bethell pokes into the covers but Harry Brook is comfortably in his ground.

The throw is not backed up, though, so the ball races away for four runs via the overthrow.

Scott Boland, the bowler, is not best pleased.

    Lead by three runs

While Jacob Bethell's sun block is applied in a precise fashion across his nose the same cannot be said of the man bowling to him, Michael Neser.

The Aussie seamer has bits rubbed in here. Some stuck in his beard on the side of his face.

Bethell starts the over with a classical drive through the covers for four. This will be talked of as a coming-of-age knock for Bethell regardless what he ends up on. The tempo has been spot on.

With nine runs taken off the over England are now in the black.

This is a proper innings from Jacob Bethell. He has not been hacking and carving, it has been very clinical.

The thought here surely must be not about setting score or anything. Just simply making the game go into the fifth day. If that happens then that's a small victory but an important one in the rebuild. Australia's partnerships in the first innings nearly all got 50 without making it look hard. Take it into day five lads.

Anyway, Jacob Bethell and Harry Brook are just about to head out to the middle. What's England's approach here?
